I have the exact same ebay cai on my silverado and I ditched the filter it came with and installed a k&n filter on the ebay intake....glad I seen this...your video validated my suspicion that this was the best set up for the cost. It's worked well for my truck.

I think the material used for the piping is slightly thicker to keep it better insulated from the engines heat as the air is traveling through it. Keeping the air colder. HOWEVER, that can easily be solved by heat wrapping the cheaper ebay intake tube. You're also paying for a more exact fit from the more expensive brand. I've always had to have slightly modify the ebay intake tubing to fit them properly but again it's not worth an extra 200 dollars for something I can do with a few hand tools and elbow grease.

Deleting my clutch fan and switching to electric fans made a bigger difference than the intake did....a cold air intake with k&n filter, a set of long tube headers, ported throttle body and electric fan swap and all the rpm/speed limiters and torque management removed make a pretty incredible difference. Anyone who does these things will be quite happy.....really happy if you put a proper tune on it with optimized timing, maf, VE tables and power enrichment. My 4.8/nv3500 rcsb when from losing to my brothers 5.3/4l60 rcsb to beating him by a truck length after the above mentioned mods....his truck is stock except for a k&n filter in the stock air box and deleted cats.

Thanks for the video, very informative. One thing that should be mentioned (and has been mentioned in comments) is the CARB-EO requirements in California (and other states). That's part of the crazy high price of the K&N kits. They have went through California's STUPID process of getting CARB approved. So, while you can use the ebay kit with a K&N filter to save a bunch of $$, when it comes time to get your Truck Smogged, it WILL NOT PASS. This is because there are 2 steps to the Smog inspection in California. 1 is the emissions test itself. The 2nd step is a visual check. If they don't the CARB-EO sticker (with serial number etc), you will fail. I'm kinda bummed because I just learned all of this AFTER ordering an ebay kit. Glad I haven't installed it yet. I'll probably just end up leaving the stock intake on the truck and getting a drop-in K&N filter.

So there actually is a difference in every brands cold air intakes.
I’m not too familiar with the intakes for ls engines. But coyote engines I do know quite a bit. And have tested and talked to the makers of different brands. So here me out...
Okay so, JLT and PMAS are pretty big companies that makes some of the best cold air intakes for the 5.0 coyote engines. They use an S&B filter. Their intake tubes/ducts are bigger than stock. They have flow tested their intake tubes for the best air flow. It’s not simply air going into the tube.
You have to be able to design the intake tube to make the air swirl and twist. There’s actually machines that test the way the air flows through the tube.
These companies that make the cold air intakes the way they do have made it to where their intakes are far superior to other companies like k&n.
Now, S&B hands down makes the best filter. You can take that how you want. But it’s true. Companies have taken k&n filters and tested them. It’s proven that their filter let very tiny dirt/dust particles through their filters. Therefore created not so clean air into your engine. Don’t even get me started on their oil filters.
Getting back to the intake tubes. K&n have been proven to actually have smaller intake tubes on certain model vehicles. The 5.0 coyote being an example.
I have talked to Jay, creator of JLT intakes, to create a filter for the ls engines because I actually plan to purchase a Silverado in the near future. If he decides to create one, it will be a game changer.
Most cold air intakes for these trucks might add 5-10 hp with a tune. But with JLT, you can expect up to 20-25 hp with a tune.
THATS how you can tell a great cold air intake company over a not so great cold air intake company.

These other clowns are backyard mechanics playing the guessing game...they really don’t know what the fuck they’re doing. They don’t understand fluid dynamics or how to optimize flows...in other words, they’re snake oil salesmen using buzzwords that they don’t understand.

bowtieguy97 think about putting a eBay one on my 03 z71. Another question. How did You find the exact color of your truck to color match?

Ayee Lmao I work for a company that sells auto finishes to body shops and commercial accounts. We mix factory colors for smaller shops so the paint is perfect factory match in PPGs DBC Deltron paint.

I installed one of those Ebay intakes on my 03 Sierra now I'm getting P0171 and P0174 codes how can I fix this or should I just swap back to my stock air box?

    • @chrishansen7004
      @chrishansen7004 Před 3 lety +1

clear the codes if your scanner can clear them, and disconnect the battery for awhile, then drive it and check again if your still getting the same codes then I dunno what to tell ya get a tune or sum

    1. Top of that air box isn't sealed against the hood, hence it WILL suck warm engine bay air. 2. Despite what K&N claims, filter oil screws map sensors and DO allow fine dust to pass by. Had to give vid a thumbs down.

Watch project farm. K&n filters are junk!! Unless you want your engine to swallow a bunch of dirt etc.

You don't get any more power, better gas milage etc! It's just a gimmick, don't waste your money,if you think your car seems better,it's all in your head because you expect it to be better.total waste of money!!
