There was a problem with the Spanudh Royal Family. The only son of Fernanfo and Isabella died young. They married their daughter Cararina to the English crown prince. He died young but his brother Henry married her after he became king. You told that story
The remaining child was Juana, who was married into the Habsburgs. The line of Spanish royalty descended through her son. Future Spanish rulers were concerned with European politics rather than focusing on Spain

So instead of colonizing New Spain, the country chose to go on into military misadventures in Europe over religion. Think how much different history would have been if more Spaniards would have settled into Texas. Most of the missions farther north of Mexico City seemed to always be understaffed and undersupplied. A nice book written by Paul Horgan, 'Great River A History of Rio Grande' talks about some these issues focusing on the Rio Grande River in the history of North America.
