  • My 4 pet rats Oskar, Alfie, Theo and Bertie show great new tricks and the best of the old tricks they have learned. You will see tricks such as operating a pulley, playing cards, raising a flag, rolling a bottle, fishing and many more.

    A wonderful video of Nadines special little boys. I love Bertie and Oskar. Alfie and Theo are just as lovely. These videos are very uplifting and can't get enough of them.
    These are my favourite rattle videos on CZcams. The end of the video where Oskar and Bertie are being weighed and have a squabble is hilarious.
    Just love it. What special boys they all are. You have trained the boys well and they all sweet. Rats are so clever. I love my three boys very much my ones I named my two all brown ones Bertie and Oska and my Brown and white one Roland.
    I have only in the last few days got all my boys sitting altogether on my shoulders.. and how sweet they look. My Bertie loves to press his head underneath my chin and sleep while I sing to him and rub my cheek on him. Then change places so they can all have a cuddle..

      How nice. It sound like you and your rats have such a good time together. I sometimes miss having rats but I still have budgerigars, at least they live much longer than rats but unfortunately are not as affectionate.

      That is great. I hope you and your rats have as much fun with training as I (and my rats) had. They are now quite old, they still remember all their tricks but are not as active anymore. Bertie also has problems with his legs.

      Thank you for your comment :-) I fed them the Science Selective Rat Pellets which have all the essential minerals and vitamins and also lots of fruit and vegetables. Occasional they got some pasta, rice and cereals. I checked their weight regularly as I did not want them to get too fat, especially as they got little treats as well during the training.

Alfie is the opposite, he is still quite fit and even still climbs onto the cage sometimes. They have still moments when they try to do some of the tricks.

    There are so many tricks that I could teach my Snoopy. Some of them he just won't do or doesn't like (like being rolled over) and I can't do some of the tricks on my couch setup. And I don't have all of the decorations that some of the fellow rat-trainers on CZcams have. But my Snoopy is doing over 20 tricks already and I am very happy about that and he enjoys doing them. I have to watch his weight though because he was getting too many rewards for his tricks every day during dinner. Keep up the good work!
    Bart and Snoopy the Rat. Snoopy's channel: czcams.com/channels/y5XX-XWPkc3gcBuuXnmwdg.html

    • @NadineMitschunas
      @NadineMitschunas  Před 6 lety

      Had a look at you channel, great how many trick Snoopy can do already! Rats only do what they want to do, mine loved pulling strings but I never got them to fetch a ball or some other object for me from further away. You can only do the roll over trick with rats who completely trust you and are not dominant. It worked well with Bertie and Oskar but the rats I have at the moment would not do it.
      Don`t force anything, just go with what Snoopy wants to do. The most important thing is that both of you have fun :-)
      Have you tried clicker training? It works well with the more complicated tricks. What are you giving him as a reward? It looked quite large. Try something smaller such as rice krispies or cooked rice, my rats normally ate this on the spot and did not run away with it. It is also better for calories.
      Why do you only let him on the sofa? You could train him to come when called, I do this with all my rats and I never have to search for them when they have free-range in the house.

    • @Eternatease
      @Eternatease Před 6 lety

      Hi!
      Yes, I tried clicker training and still regularly use the clicker to help me enforce more difficult or new tricks. For most tricks he doesn't need the clicker anymore and simply saying "Snoopy" or "come" is enough. Or visual signals. I can use tapping my finger on objects to have him go there or do certain movements. Tapping is used for positioning exercises and he understands my intentions very well (usually 😉). He knows that he has to come to wherever I tap.
      Some of the foods he gets as rewards are pieces of pasta, corn kernels, peas, pieces of sweet potato, pieces of bread crouton. I already tried to give him smaller portions. And I have cut dairy (desserts, chocolate milk, cheese) from his diet. When he is full he might hoard his treats or take them to the big cage. I am watching his weight ☺. I spoil him too much because he is only a solo rat. I am aware of the fact that rats prefer/need ratty company but that is not possible at the moment. Also my country is too small to find rescue rats about his age. And yes, I feel guilty about it regularly. I am in regular contact with a rat behavioralist and together we came to the conclusion that keeping him solo after his last (16 months older) male cagemate died that this was the better solution.
      I can't have 3 rats (though this cage could easily hold 8 males). Or I might get the same situation as you had with Oskar and then I would still have a solo rat and a solo pair that would also need separate playtime. Or maybe supervised playtime for all 3 but never unsupervised together in one cage. Snoopy already had to get stitches from a fight with the last rat, Pingu, and I don't want that to happen again with other rats.
      In my current room it is not possible to have him roam free. I do use rain gutters though to connect his main cage to the couch (play cage) and my staircase platform and the gutter to the staircase platform is attached almost the entire day. He can go there whenever he wants to. Or come to me on the couch the entire evening/night when I am on the couch. Or go back to his big cage whenever he wants.
      He does come to me often when called but he has a will of his own and sometimes just refuses to come. When I call him at the cage he usually pops out to see what I have for him. But even then he sometimes just stretches his body out of the Sputnik house and doesn't want to come out with his entire body or all 4 paws.
      I simply have too many places behind furniture or in couches for him to hide in. And rats are hoarders. I can't have him drag everything to his cage. Also I had stepped on an older rat in the past once and that rat had a dislocated shoulder for months until she died. I don't want to ever go through that again. One moment of carelessness or inattention and you might step on or sit on a rat or crush a rat between a door, etc. And in the past I had rats that could climb 12 flights of stairs within seconds. And then I had to look for them on the attic. For instance between laundry, behind/inside the washing machine. And I have too many cables on the floor for rats to chew on.
      If Snoopy liked to he would be allowed on the living room table.
      I think that using the rain gutters is a good median to still have him roam free for a bit. And he has a cardboard castle with various boxes on the staircase platform that he can visit whenever he wants to.
      When Snoopy dies (which I hope is not soon) I will have 2 rats again. And I will then train them as well.

    • @NadineMitschunas
      @NadineMitschunas  Před 6 lety

      I know what you mean with introductions, if they go wrong it can be very bad. I had to go to the vet with a rat for stitches after a failed introduction as well. Especially boys are difficult. I had best results with babies, but adult rats are very difficult.
      My rats are allowed to free-range in our house when we are at home. So far they have not done any damage apart from some nibbled furniture (which is all my own furniture and I don`t mind). I have only boys now because the girls I had years ago did so much damage that I could not let them run free anymore. But my boys were always very good :-).

      With food as reward and clicker training (you use a specific noise to tell the rat that it has done something right, used in addition to food). If you are interested have a look in the following book:

      @NadineMitschunas  Před 6 lety

      It does not work with all rats and best to start them young. But rats are very food orientated so you might get them to do some easy tricks with a nice treat as a reward such as rice or corn flakes. Easy tricks are for example spin and standing on the hind legs. With both tricks you just have to hold the treat in front of them and either spin your hand so the rat has to follow or move it upwards. After a while you just have to make the hand movement for the rat to respond.

    Hello there, its Esther (Shadow the Rat).
    I recently made a rat tricks website (rattrix.weebly.com/), and I was wondering if you'd be willing to let me link one of your rat trick videos to my own website?
    It would go under a tab I'm making called "training other small animals", and I think it'd be a nice way to show people that small pets of any species (and gender) can be trained (I'd also be put your channel link under the video to give credit).
    Thanks in advance, Esther.
