I am employed by Butera, We had a manager be transferred to my Butera from this location. I'll tell you what's going on with the company, let me clear up something first, Butera is an Italian oriented grocery store. It's European in nature but specialized in Italian foods. Unfortunately my Butera was sold recently to another grocery store. My location will no longer exist in a few weeks...The prime reason for Butera's selling or closing stores is simply because Butera never invested enough money into there buildings/stores...there prices were extremely competitive...but there stores were not attractive to say the least. For example depending on what Butera you went to...some locations didn't offer a full service bakery and a limited meat department. Butera wasn't competitive with today's needs or conveniences. They didn't offer curbside-pickup, catering, rewards system...nothing that a Jewel or Mariano's would offer. In a nutshell shopping at Butera was a very bland and lackluster experience. There selection and prices were nice but most departments lacked and the stores were not updated and were falling apart. On a side note Butera is a great company to work for...I will miss it. I suggest if you enjoyed shopping with Butera, Vali Produce or Caputo's would be your closest options...meaning very similar to a Butera. I see Butera eventually filing for bankruptcy and completely closing operations...they originally had 35 locations years ago and reduced down to 12 locations. Thank you for posting this...made me sad but it's nice that it's preserved now.
One Butera in Elgin is on National St. in a strip mall built by Richard Gromer. Gromer had a small privately-owned chain of supermarkets, the flagship of which was on McLean Blvd and Wing St. Gromer bought a parcel of land on which stood the Elgin National Watch Factory. Here was his first problem. He had to mitigate the ground of radium used to paint hands and dials of glow-in-the-dark watches. When the project started, they thought they only had to remove a couple inches of soil. Then they found they had to dig deeper. And deeper. And deeper. When the soil was declared safe, construction began. Opening was about two years late. And the customers stayed away in droves. Gromer built in what was considered to be a bad part of Elgin. The extra costs incurred and lack of customers forced Gromer to sell off all his stores. He sold to Dominick's, then it became a Butera. I left Elgin in 1994, so I have no clue what condition the strip mall is in.
I lived in Ottawa where all of that radium was made to paint the hands on the clocks. A lot of super fund sites were there where they had to dig up all the soil and dispose of it. For a long time Ottawa was nicknamed radium City
Just so you know there's this abandoned nail salon in Algonquin Commons that's doors are open. I once saw it and I tugged the door for no reason and it was open lol. It's by the former pottery barn
Back in the day, there was a Chatham Complete Food Centers grocery store located on Hayes and Houston Whittier on Detroit's Eastside. When, Chatham Complete Food Centers closed permanently, and a Eagle Supermarket took over the old Chatham Complete Food Centers store. Then, Eagle closed permanently. To, this very day Dollar General 💵 took over the Chatham Complete Food Centers/Eagle Supermarket building.
Eagle is from my childhood in Rockford areas, only thing I remember is my parents complaining about their prices. Can’t be any worse than Schnucks though
I wanted to give you an update on the Butera in Roselle. It has officially switched owners to the new company. They are open and renovating. Please head over to Roselle and film the remodeling of the former BUTERA. I'm curious to see what they are revamping since I stopped working there. Thanks again! Also keep my request anonymous, please.
In my hometown of Decatur, Illinois we had three Eagle grocery stores. One was across the highway from where I grew up and the other two were in the South side of Decatur in South Shores, and the West side of Decatur was another Eagle grocery store. In the mid 90's I was a merchandiser for Pepsi and used to do all of those stores. The Eagles across the highway became a auto museum and UHAUL place, the old Eagles grocery store, Monical's Pizza that was there for a long time, and a Walgreens were torn down. They wound up putting in a Chinese restaurant that was a buffet place, and other things. The Eagles grocery store in South Shores became a Krogers. It is a really small store in South Shores. I used to buy steaks at the Eagles when they ran deals from time to time. I miss going into those grocery stores.
Wow! I used to work at this Eagle. I met my husband there 35 yrs ago working together after school. There used to be a DMV next door..Wendy's & Taco Bell in the parking lot. Ate there many making $3.15/hr. We still laugh about that! It looks so run down but I had heard that it turned into a sausage shop? :/
About a week ago I was wondering about this store(if it was still an open butera). I bet this store looked good and did well back in Eagles 'better days'. I worked at the(east side)St.Charles Eagle which was also turned into butera. That butera closed after 10 years of operation.Eagle had a few large stores like this Naperville location. Another large 1 was in Kankakee. That 1 was bought by Ultra foods who also went out of business. I hate the modern trends of order online and have it delivered or pick up at the store! Eagle was very good to their employees with benefits. I had a job interview at butera in 04. Health insurance wasn't even an option unless you were a department manager or store manager. Ug.😒
LG was a great alternative to Samsung. They didn't put so many garbage apps on their devices, and they were usually better-priced than comparable Samsung models. Guess I'll stick with Pixels!

Used to go to this Eagle all the time as a kid since we lived down Olsen from it. I remember it had an expansion and renovation in the early 90s.
We used to stop at this place before trick-or-treating. Sad it’s gone but it was like the 35th best grocery store in Naperville/Lisle
Just so you know there's this abandoned nail salon in Algonquin Commons that's doors are open. I once saw it and I tugged the door for no reason and it was open lol. It's by the former pottery barn
