I think a big part of it is Jaylen Brown. The fact that they play a similar way, similar role, and they aren’t that far off from each other in terms of production. JT is better, but not by enough that it would be comparable to the other best players in the league and their costar.
Example: Jokic to Murray. Giannis to Middleton/Dame now. Luka to Kyrie. SGA to JWill.
So there’s always gonna be some lack of clarity as to who is responsible for their success. Obviously the answer is both, but we’re talking about perception, and that can make it seem like neither of them are as good as they really are.
It’s kinda funny because it’s like just because both of these guys are really good and have tons of success, it makes them both seem less good individually, and where neither of them are “that guy”. But if you were to put either of them on some of these 15-9 seed teams, on their own, they would probably both be good enough to be the guy and people would talk about them very differently.

As a Heat fan, I've watched him a lot. His biggest flaw is that he's not aggressive. He doesn't do enough to shift the defense and lets himself get taken out of the game too easily. What makes it especially frustrating is his size and athleticism. The biggest flaw Denver exposed about my Heat last year was our lack of size. Whenever we succeded in keeping the ball out of Jokic's hands, we'd have to worry about Aaron Gordon posting up anybody not named Bam (who would typically be on Jokic). I don't see any reason the Celtics couldn't have similar success seeing as they were a big team too and had even better spacing. Especially with the number of times I saw Tatum take long jumpers over guys like Kyle Lowry and Gabe Vincent. He really makes you forget he’s 6’9”. Yes he's overhated but some of the criticism is definitely valid and it would make him a better player

He does not have a signature style or all-time skillset. He is not a great passer like Jokic or Luka, not a great back to basket scorer like Embiid, not a great shooter like Curry, not a great paint scorer like Giannis, not a great mid range scorer like SGA. But he is elite (or almost elite) at every facet of the game. He is even clutch at certain moments. And a pretty good defender as well. But nothing of him stands out; plus playing with someone who is basically a lite (or upgraded sometimes) version of him does not help. But that does not take away the fact that he is still a top 5-10 player currently in the NBA. Not a lot of players right now are elite on both sides of the court like him.

🎯 and I believe he’s conscious and even sometimes too conscious of how he plays. He’s so fine tuned at this stage to have a balance to his game. As much as he loves Kobe, he doesn’t take many Kobe-esque shots. He seems to be focused on being efficient and that can lead to him looking for shots when it’s already too late because he looks to be trying to maintain some sort of efficiency in the offense, and I believe that’s what drives most fans and people who watch him often crazy, is how it looks like he’s taking himself out of the game sometimes, and while that’s the optic he’s still doing things to try to make the team better. That’s a lot to juggle for a man his age with the pressure on him, and he handles it with a calm and poise that will define him when he starts winning championships.

And he got his 2nd MVP, back to back, that season. And extra kicker, in 03 he was 26, just like Tatum is now. Jalen improved in 2023 but he wasn't dramatically a completely different player than he was in the 22 playoffs
Truth of the matter is that Lukas playstyle isn't easy to fit around because ultimately he will be the one taking the most shots AND ball handling
Large part of why Dallas won game 4 was that luka finally pushed the pace instead of grabbing a defensive board or wait for the rebounder to pass it to him near the paint, take 6-8 seconds off the shot clock to cross half court, dribble then call for a screen, slowly get the defender into said screen and from there play his shit
Luka has had the highest time of possession out of any player since 2020 until this year
Ironically brunson finished 1st this year lmao
Massive difference between luka and jokic is getting ready off ball and fast decision making Jokic tends to be at the bottom of the league in time of possession among the highest usage rate players while luka is at the top

I think you make a couple of connections that feel off: because the Celtics had success, Tatum must be the best player in the league? Because Tatum keeps making all nba first, he must be the best in the league? Has he ever made top 3 in an mvp vote? Not even close. Every year there is either an injured guy falling out of all nba first (embiid), a positional problem (jokic vs embiid), Tatum has always been the guy to fill that 5th slot on the team. So that makes him at least a top 8 guy in the league. Why cant we just leave it at that?
Looking at his game the issue is obvious, way too many pull up jumpers where year in, year out, he is below league average, and it's not even close. If he wants to become an mvp candidate, he needs to improve his decision making.

Main reason why I downplay JT a lot at least is cuz he's been on a good team his whole career. I've never seen him struggle. LBJ, Luka, and MJ all had struggles on a bad team and yet they were able to carry these teams to the playoffs. However, personally, I don't think JT is able to do this if he had a bad team. To me his offense is a lot of step back threes, mid range jumpers, and yes he can finish until its someone the same size or bigger than him. That problem was exposed by 2022 wiggins.

    • @jammer9941
      @jammer9941 Před měsícem +11

Idk the only time you have seen him have to do it was 2021. Brown missed the last like month of the season including the playoffs. Half the team got covid including Tatum missing large portions of the season. He dropped 50 in the play in game just to make the playoffs and then averaged 30 in the only playoff series you got with a fully healthy KD, kyrie, and Harden all average basically 25+ (harden 24.8) and even dropped 50 to not get swept with a starting line up that included Evan Fournier, Tristan Thompson, a washed up kemba, and Marcus smart against a team that started kyrie, kd, Harden, Joe Harris, and Blake griffin. So if that's the closest we have to him on a bad team that's not exactly a bad showing.

I think Jayson Tatum is an amazing player, but I think the reason why he doesn't have the same respect that other young superstars do is because Tatum can be a little inconsistent and passive at times. The passive bit isn't always a bad thing as Tatum does have great teammates that he can rely on in certain moments, but as you were talking about having "the guy" on a contending team then "that guy" is expected to take matters in his own hands and do everything he can to will the team to victory. Since Tatum hasn't had as many of those big moments as the circumstances may not have required them, I think that's why some people say Tatum is still found wanting.

But its not cos JT is carrying them like Jordan, Lebron or even luka. its cos with how nets trade turned out Cs basically had 2-3 max guys AND Brown+Tatum on rookie scale. Which is not a situation a good rookie finds himself in almost ever (closest to sth like this is that Detroit 2nd pick what if, if they didnt choose Darko how stacked would melo or dwade career be). Cos end of the day he is really good, but his resume is so stacked in a pretty large part because Celtics have been contenders for his whole career and he often was best, but even more importantly the most available of their top guys.

I will say that JT has some truly great moments in the playoffs. Like the 2022 run that you mentioned and dropping 50 in Game 7. People joke about how the Celtics could win without Tatum but I don’t think that’s true. You could make an argument that they don’t even make the conference finals without him in 2022 and 2023. I think what’s hurt his reputation the most is making the CF his first years in the league. He was young and young players typically don’t have what it takes to win yet. Now that he is a bit older and already has made the finals I will say this is his make or break moment.

Once they started to lead their franchise, media saw "Face of the league," but neither guy put up "Face of the league" numbers even though they put up good/borderline great numbers. We all know what happened to Kawhi after and he for the most part cemented his legacy in Toronto (even though he has failed since then). Tatum has the opportunity to cement his legacy going forward.

There’s nothing elite about his game, he thinks he’s an elite 3 PT shooter but he’s actually ass, and constantly ruins games for the Celtics by refusing to stop jacking bricks. Even his mid range bricks more than it falls. Theyre gonna give KP that rudy gobert treatment, constant screens for him to defend luka and just leave him on a island if the mavs do that it’ll make KP unplayable

This is very simple - he doesn't pass the eye test the same way. He's made several CFs but that's only because it's been a stacked team in a weak conference.
Accolades =/= automatically jumping over people who are better than you on the court itself.
He'll get a ring this year, and Tatum is an all time player, but to just jump him over people like Jokic, Giannis, Luka etc would be unfair.

☘Longtime Celtics fan here. I think one thing that hurts' JT's reputation is his lack of personability and comfort in his own skin. His interviews are always excruciating. He gives the impression of someone who doesn't trust the media, doesn't like people, and doesn't want to be there. (To be fair, Jaylen Brown, Joe Mazzulla, Jrue Holiday, and Payton Pritchard give off similar vibes. It's like they all graduated from the Bill Belichick Charm School.) Jokić can be the same way, but he does it with a sense of humor... he gives the impression he is, at least, trying.

The best thing about him I've seen is that he is rarely injured and he's usually available to play. My issue with him. I could not pinpoint but I believe it's his inconsistency. He's had a great team and gets credit for going far in the playoffs each year, but he's had a good sidekick, good coaching, good organization and teammates each of those times so it's mainly his inconsistencies and play style that drives people crazy. Takes way too many jump shots for a guy that height, but he's improved on the rebounds and hopefully has mature enough to take smarter shots

It’s weird I wonder if Jayson will ever be a MVP winner even atleast once in his career or twice with the ceiling and projection his talent and ceiling is considering how he’s had much more success than Paul Pierce for example

This is a great opportunity for Tatum. One series, especially finals can change everything.

The thing about Tatum is that sometimes you don't really know what you are going to get to him game after game. He's often come up short in pressure situations and just disappears. He might have good games overall if you look at the stat sheet, but when it matters the most and he needs to produce buckets.
He's always had a great team around him to pick up the slack. He could never be the best player in the NBA because guys like Luka and Jokic have elite level playmaking on top of their superior scoring ability.
Tatum IMO is a worse version of a prime 2019 Kawhi.

As a Celtics fan, my frustration with Tatum is the same as most Celtics fans; he's got the talent, but not the heart. He's too passive in the worst ways, and it makes him inconsistent. While being passively inconsistent, he also becomes more actively pressured into performing well. And he tends to struggle as stakes get higher.
The biggest issue with Tatum, and the Celtics, is that Jaylen Brown's game is more sustainable towards success. Because, unlike Tatum, keeps defenses honest from all ranges. He's a consistent threat from all 3 main scoring levels. Tatum tends to settle too heavily on his outside shooting (that damn sidestep) or only driving to force contact. He doesn't utilize his gifts effectively enough to REALLY take the mantle of that guy in the team.
If/When the Celtics win, I wouldn't be surprised if Brown leads the charge.

Tatum is a top 4 best two way player itl has moments in playoffs that are under a microscope but others where no one cares, elite scorer, always healthy and a winner
