Next Step Outdoors I’m 17 and my dad and I recently got access to a hunting property but I really just have no clue where to start , like I hear that I should look at aerials and use that but I really am not sure , any advice or like what would be your step by step breakdown?
Bryce Copeland the ultimate goal is identify where the deer are feeding, where they bed, and how they travel in between. This will give you a great start. Good information on how to scout an area. Would have liked more information on how you intended to access the area undetected. As well as how the wind affected how you hunted it. Stand placement how you determined that other than by sign. Hunting a small patch of woods is difficult. Good luck.
Those are all great suggestions. I’ll try to include more of that in the next one I do of these. This little chunk was super tough to hunt because it was almost always a South wind and I had to access from the South across wide open fields. I ended up just walking straight up one of the property lines to the north edge and then maneuvered my way West or East where I thought I’d have the best odds. Had a few really good hunts still and blew my best opportunity reaching for the camera and got busted.

Those are some of the best finds. A scrape. I found my scrape last season and bucks still visit it. Only me and buddy knows about it.
They are awesome spots. Deer use them all year round so can be an awesome place to monitor deer with a trail cam.
Ive wanted my own land for years and finally got a house on 15 acres.. watched this to get a idea on how to scout.. the previous home owner said the property is flooded with deer so im looking forward to a successful season.

new to scouting as a young hunter, what would u recommend doing in a small private area with a crop field, and a small patch of woods. does scent matter when scouting in late summer? would love to hear from you, love the vids man.
Hey Brook, appreciate the question. I don't worry about scent until about a month before season. If you are able to glass the field from a ways away, I'd definitely do some of that late August and early september. Might not tell you a ton but will get an idea for how many deer there are and what quality of bucks are in the area. I'd scout the patch of woods and try to find where they enter and exit, as well as if they bed at all in that little area.

Good video. Is it best to scout in winter after deer season? I think a lot of this could be less obvious when everything is green and tall in late summer
What I’ve found is the best time to scout is right after season when all of the sign from fall is still fresh and all of the foliage is down. Through winter and spring all of the sign is preserved pretty well so I’m usually in the woods a ton. Cool to pick up sheds too. Then on the flip side the most important scouting you’re going to do is in the season. That’s going to tell you what’s happening real time.

That’s one thing I haven’t been doing a good job of when I film these videos is coming back with a second one to show the results etc. moving forward I’ll make that happen thanks for the idea!
As someone new into the bow hunt scene and trying to learn the ropes of scouting, have ever used a drone to spot deer bedding? Or know of anyone that uses a drown? Or what your thoughts are of using drown all together?
Also, what’s your typical approach on getting in contact with private land owners without coming off as intrusive?

The drone idea is super controversial. Most states ban the use of drones for anything that aids you in locating deer. Some states allow it only for recovering a deer that you shot. It is an interesting thought to use it just to see what an area looks like from a bird's eye view. If it is legal and used out of season, I think it could be a great way to learn a property or get an idea of where deer might be bedding.
As for the permission question, I do not have a ton of experience door knocking or tracking down land owners. The permissions I get typically come over time as I meet people or are introduced by friends/family. I think being respectful is the most important thing regardless though.
Great video alot of good knowledge, my only dislikes is corn, you're surrounded by AG and your not gonna be able to compete, save money time... i get your trying to get as much info on new property with camera's etc but just not worth doing especially when food is literally 100 yards any direction! the other is touching the rubs, now you're scent is all over the rubs, the key is to slip in and out without them knowing your there as much as possible. those two things are the only thing i disagreed but you covered alot of great stuff, good work 👍
I appreciate the feedback. With the corn, I think you’d struggle to efficiently get a concentrated inventory of deer without it. Sure you could sit it on a field edge but my goal was to get as many pics as I could before they dropped their antlers. The rub comment is a good point although I had blown up the woods pretty good already so wasn’t too worried about what impact I had since it was after season.
@@NextStepOutdoors I track deer for S&G, I have walked with local wild whitetail for over 20 yrs.. spend 2O hrs a week with a family, they spend half or more of their day on the site where I work, we work alongside each other then have rest periods after my work. Spending as much time physically near deer and observing them has served me best..
Short scouting is tough..I see why its hard for most people to find sign in summer, it is more subtle when all is open... people walk right past deer..

But snow? THAT isn't snow brother.. (right about now I want to show you pics of deer happily following me as I was blazing their daily trails ..lol)
Learn all you can..they're amazing creatures..
I learned how to respectfully acknowledge, greet, then follow wild whitetail..starting with does.. bucks don't have responsibilities so are tougher to start with.. Scent of does I walk with on my shoes draws bucks in rut, calms their response to me as I let them smell me. I actively make my presence known, & they let me pass.. then become acclimated..then, I have a "ticket in"
Deer are awsome.. you are in the wrong place or don't understand them If you can't see them.. soon as you understand their world, their ways..its like magic...
Must love swamps and briar, "buckbrush" as you call it!
My saying is "..we only eat the tourists" given family & associate deer I have been learning from!

If you can, I would...Keeps your cams from getting stolen and out of sight of the deer.
I have access to a 40 acre parsel connected to 4500 acre state forest. This year I have not seen deer and not much sign. Got does on cam at night and just before and after hunting hours. I'm in a no bait state. Any suggestions if you're not seeing a lot of great sign like you had in this video?
Right now I’d be scouting more looking for scrapes. If no natural scrapes exists, I’d probably try and make some mock scrapes along the best travel routes you can find. As the ruts start ramping up, the deer will start using the mock scrapes and allow you to get some inventory.

Does onX have a wind indicator?
Yes, you can choose to have it show the “ideal” wind direction for a particular way point or the current wind direction for the waypoint. Hope that helps.
What program were you using on your phone?
That is the OnX Hunt App. I use it all the time whether I’m on public or private.

how high did you put the cam ?
I generally put them 10-12 foot up so they are out of reach of other people and out of the line of sight for deer.
Great content, hope you got some nice bucks. The video was jerky and a little disorienting to watch. Slowing down your movements and holding steadier will improve the presentation and enhance the experience. Keep up the good work.

I ended up hunting this piece for just one season and had some really cool hunts (nothing hit the ground tho) but have moved on from it just because of where I live now.
If only I can get permission to hunt on private land, hate going to state and public land, gonna try early this year, really wanna get something bigger then my 10 pointer
They are out there! Every year tons of good bucks get killed off of public even in the “pressured” states. A lot of my buddies are stone cold public land killers. Put in the time scouting and it’ll pay off!
@@NextStepOutdoors yep some think private land is the magical recipe and it is good if it's not pressures like anywhere else. But state and public land is literally improved for wildlife. The public land by me has improved so much within the last 10 years. Planting the best food plots deer love

Why put corn down after doing all the scouting? Find the spots you know deer are traveling, and “hunt” them….
Hi Jeff, this video was made after season was over. I was more interested in getting as many trail cam pictures in a short amount of time while the bucks were still holding their antlers to get an idea of caliber of bucks in the area.
Because HE is paying for the corn and license. Why not hunt the way YOU want and let others hunt the way THEY want

We had some cool hunts but never tagged anything out there. After that fall, gained permission at some closer properties so focused more on those. It was definitely a challenge with having to access all the way across a wide open field.
I can tell you for sure those rubs aren't his bedding area. It's in the wide open & I've never seen a mature buck bed in wide open woods where you can see 100 yards or more like that.
U know what might be fun. U could hunt those deer instead of baiting them.
