  • Van Damme had a great start to the 90's with a string of hits. In 1995's Sudden Death he would fend off a group of mercenaries during a hockey game! Van Damme's taking out bad guys, dismantling explosives, and blocking goals in this high-tension action thriller that would also be one last moment of box-office glory for one of the decades most iconic action stars!

In terms of action movies, the 90s was the decade of the Die Hard clones.
To me, Sudden Death was almost like a molotov cocktail of Die Hard, Cliffhanger and Under Siege, cause I can definitely see a lot of the inspiration. Though it doesn't stop me from enjoying this film.
I like the movie because it's mostly fun and at times pretty comical, most notably the scene where Van Damme is fighting a the mascot in the kitchen. It's entertaining as hell and funny at the same time.
I especially love Powers Boothe in this film, and I think he really nails it being the villain.
Boothe has like the charisma and composure of Hans Gruber while also being eccentric and over the top like Tommy Lee Jones from Under Siege. This is probably my 2nd favorite role Powers Boothe has done (my first is Rapid Fire).

Definitely - this movie has fun action and Boothe is a comically menacing villain! Love all the practical stunt work as well.
