    Its crazy how a work in a semi scripted show was maybe the most memorable sporting related event of my childhood. This was so traumatic to 9 year old me....And Its also so conflicting to look at Jimmy and see he was a kind person who had one horrible night where he did something truly terrible. Hard to know how to feel about it.

    I remember that Piper's Pit. I had already figured out that most of wrestling was a gimmick but it was like a magic show. You know it's illusion, but you enjoy it anyway if the magician is any good. Anyway, I remember that coconut catching Jimmy in the head and busting open. Snuka was huge here in the Northeast. I went to see WWF cards one Saturday each month at the old Boston Garden. At the end of each event an announcer announced the card for the next month and every time he said Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka the building was ready to crumble from the thunderous applause. My mother hated wrestling but came in when Snuka was on tv. She even invited herself to the events that I went to. She sat throughout except when he was wrestling. Michael Jordan had nothing on him. He was supposed to win the belt from Iron Shiek. He beat Backlund because Snuka had recently done a face turn and a babyface beating another for the belt was considered bad business. Then Snuka"s girlfriend died and he was a person of interest. So they gave it to Hogan then they poached other territories, became cartoon characters and became what I called "Sesame Street in Tights" because it was boring. I couldn't watch wrestling again until ECW came along. Coincidentally, their first champion was....Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka. Thank you, Paul Heyman, for making wrestling great again.

      @semperconstance Před 3 lety

      Many wrestlers have difficulty categorizing him as a murderer, because the Jimmy they saw and often worked with was quiet, demure, respectful, and a genius in the ring. What's more, the programs he worked with them made each of them alot of money, as he was an incredible draw (especially in the pre-Hogan days). For Jimmy, I think he carried around the weight of that fateful evening for the remainder of his life (which is why he was always so quiet)- not only because of what he likely did, but because in all likelihood, he had no recollection of doing it. Drug addiction is a terrible thing. It affects each person differently - so much so, that the individual affected can become an entirely different person under the influence of it. Nancy Argento knew a monster that night. The rest of the world saw a different Jimmy Snuka.

      I have cracked open coconuts before and those things are hard as rocks. Very difficult to open. No way would it explode like an egg against a person's head like that. Also, there were was no coconut water that went flying out. No doubt that coconut was gimmicked.

      @Messiah717 Před 3 lety +1

      Roddy kept this one going until the day he died. Any sensible person knows like you said how hard a coconut is. It would never just explode like that and more importantly you would kill someone. Also, notice there's little to no water when the hit takes place. It was drained and precracked.

    On May 10, 1983, a few hours after defeating José Estrada at a WWF TV taping at the Lehigh County Agricultural Hall in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Snuka placed a call for an ambulance. When emergency personnel arrived at his room at the George Washington Motor Lodge, they found that his girlfriend, Nancy Argentino, had been injured. She was transported to Allentown's Sacred Heart Medical Center, where she died shortly after of "undetermined craniocerebral injuries." The coroner's report stated that Argentino, 23, died of traumatic brain injuries consistent with a moving head striking a stationary object. Autopsy findings show Argentino suffered more than two dozen cuts and bruises - a possible sign of serious domestic abuse - on her head, ear, chin, arms, hands, back, buttocks, legs, and feet. Forensic pathologist Isidore Mihalakis, who performed the autopsy, wrote at the time that the case should be investigated as a homicide until proven otherwise. Deputy Lehigh County coroner Wayne Snyder later said, "Upon viewing the body and speaking to the pathologist, I immediately suspected foul play and so notified the district attorney."[101]
    Snuka was the only suspect involved in the subsequent investigation. Although charges were not pressed at the time against Snuka, the case was left officially open.

    McMahon had Snuka in his pocket because, McMahon paid off people in Pennsylvania due to the fact Snuka killed Nancy Argentino. So Snuka did exactly what Vince McMahon told him to do. Hot Rod had the best Mic skills for a wrestler in the 80's. So McMahon used Snuka's fame to catapult Piper as the No.1 heel in 1984 WWF, hence by crushing Snuka over the head with a Coconut.

    This bit could never be done today. At the time it was quite shocking. I was watching wrestling and when this came on my mom came in and watched. When he hit Snuka with the coconut my mom turned the TV off. I later saw it at a friends house. Snuka agreed to all of it although he probably didn’t have much of a choice seeing as we all know what happens to wrestlers who challenge Vince. But My mom was convinced that Piper was the most racist human alive. Lol. I explained that it’s just a work but she still wouldn’t let me watch Pipers Pit anymore. She was fine with the rest of the show but she hated Piper. I thought Piper was awesome and I still do.
