Travel in the Cheap Jeep with the Ghost Town Hunters as they explore abandoned ghost towns, mining camps, mines, mills and graveyards of the old west. NEW: Meet the Crew. • GHOST TOWN
This video is still just as enjoyable to watch today in 2024 as it was well over a decade ago when it was made.I would love to see somebody drive the same route today and re-film everything in 8k with led lighting.
Thanks everyone for your nice comments. The Cheap Jeep is still going strong as we continue searching for abandoned ghost towns and mining camps. We have shot a lot of additional footage (with several Go Pros & other cameras) for a "special project" which I will reveal in the near future.
Yes and no. Without the doors, we do get a lot of dust and wet when it rains. We still have the doors but have only used them on one trip since 1972. We find them too limiting for our purpose.. Also, when we use the doors, we can't carry the side rails. Those are an absolute necessity if we find ourselves stuck in soft sand. @@spongehead1354
Thanks for your nice comments. We have shot a lot of video since we put together GHOST TOWN TRAVELS. Unfortunately I am so busy with several other projects that I just don't have the time to edit another GHOST TOWN TRAVELS show right now. Several people have asked that we make a second video, and I know I will eventually have to give in and do it.
I love this video and keep coming back to watch it. I hope you still have the cheap jeep ! Looks like you guy's had a lot of fun doing it. You should make more of these kind of films so we can all go along. Thanks for sharing it with us !
Thank you so much for making this video! I have watched this many times. Thanks to inspiration from you guys and Cat's old website, I have visited some of these towns over the last decade. I now have many very special memories of exploring these places and I owe them all to you guys. This video lets me see what some of these places used to look like and it's very special to me.
I think I have watched this video 3-4 times now. Thanks for sharing this adventure with us. Really interesting about the WW11 family in such a remote place.
Much as I love seeing the old mines, going inside is usually a real bad idea. Glad you all lived through it without getting gassed, falling down shafts or having a collapse. Better to "Stay Out, Stay Alive" as the signs warn. Thanks for the cool video.
I would love to go Ghost Town and Mining Camp hunting in the future. What I love about the U.S. Is that it is so vast, the Government allows these towns to rot away rather than knock them down
I grew up in Nevada, Winnemucca- when I was a kid there were more ghost towns seems like. I’d go out hunting with my dad and we’d come across them. This was a really nostalgic trip to watch. I see you guys went through a few tires. Definitely do a trip like this in numbers and let someone know your itinerary. It’s most definitely quite remote! Thanks much, I enjoyed every moment.
Grrrreat video. Thank you for all the work. I was in Bodie in 1991 and it was just as interesting as you describe. Maybe some day I will get to see the other ghost towns that you have visited.
Quite a road trip as they say along with quite a lot of work and planning in the building of the cheep Jeep The history lesson on all those old towns is wonderful Thanks well worth the time to watch be safe
So cool!! I hope you guys are still doing this stuff. Those Fairbanks Morse engines are worth well into the hundred thousand dollar range so scrap they are not. Keep on truckin boys!!
14:25 is a hole spade... You can reach down in a hole , twist it a little and pull straight up with the dirt. That's why the blade has such a bend. Similar to a post hole digger, but for deeper holes.
loved this thanx for sharing your exploits i hope the cheep jeep is going strong and if you ever go on another similar tour you will post another epic video like this one
Hi, my name is Chris, and I am living in North Wales, UK I am always intrigued by the number of surnames that I can identify with, when you guys go mooching about. The surname of Cornish and Hackett are very interesting. Thanks again boys.
Cerro Gordo has been privately owned for decades and occupied continuously since the 60’s. The owners lived there in the Gordon house during the 80’s on until their passing. We relieve the current caretaker for 2 weeks at a time a couple of times a year. I mention all this because if not for the Cerro Gordo silver Los Angeles would never have frown to what it is today, or if it had it would have taken many more decades to do so. I think you should make a return trip and really explore the town with the caretaker as it deserves much more than the very short time you gave it and a shot of the American Hotel. Now off my soap box, great overall video my dad was an avid ghost town explorer and rock hounder for over 50 years, he would have loved films like this in his later years.
Hi everyone. Its 2024 and yes, we still have the Cheap Jeep. Many things have happened in the last few years that prevented us from exploring more abandoned ghost towns. Things like Covid and the passing of my wife. But we are back in the saddle again with more trips planned. Keep exploring and be safe everyone.
Have your website bookmarked for years didnt know you had a video ,anyway ex wife and i met you guys because i reconized the cheap jeep at a grocery store parking lot i think in winnamucca or tonepah you were awsome to talk with .Anyone who loves ghost towns KD RADIO has a lot of great info and pics and storys
I just want to thank you for a little vision that I more than likly would not be privey to in the lifestyle I curently exist in . I enjoyed what I seen and probobly will watch the segment several times as it open up for partial experience an avenue several of us may never have the opertunity to have in our personal experience, so again thank you for your considereation of others as you enjoyed your expereince.
WOW.... Thanks guys for this fantastic video. You all have me glued in my seat, I couldnt take my eyes off the screen. If you ever do another video, Please try some of the new led lights so you can see more, and so your cam can see. The ore car scene was great! and they still rolled... That is so cool..... Ok, I'll stop now. Thanks again for the video guys... Hope to see more form you ?
Any word if these guys are making a comeback or not. Like mostly everyone here I have watched this again and again. I enjoy this video so much and hope to see more soon.
thank you for showing the part of the history of america, i myself are danish and live in denmark, iam a history freak, specially for american history before 1930 :). i have watched this 2 times on your website, before you uploaded here and today, i was feeling like watching it again. i hope someday you guys, will make another video, because the tech is there today and give us an update on the cities you guys was visiting :)
thanks for taking me along who would of thought cheap jeep could make it good idea with them side rails for added traction .i want a ride in that sky bucket.just kidding
This is very good. Descriptions of the buildings and their history. Even grew to respect the car, well engineered and dismantled / built back when it was common. At first I thought it was a 60's Tempest but It's not so I calmed down. The one funny point to me was at about 28:00 someone is trying to help lift a rock by standing on it. For some reason (gravity) it didn't work, but everything else is great
Did you say that the road to Bodie is paved? I visited there in the mid 80s. It was one long wash board (dirt) road then. I couldn't get my little car over 10mph the whole way. None the less, it was well worth the trip! I'm like you guys, if I see a road, I want to know what's at the end. So glad explored when I was young. Lot's of memories for my old age. Thanks for sharing the video.
I've explored all over the Owyhees in Idaho since I was a kid. You folks have really captured on film that certain thing that seems to drive folks to explore. You are giving viewers an opertunity to traverse old sometimes historic areas without their having to take the risks. Thanks and hoping for future shows. Might I suggest LED lighting? they are Lighter and much more bright. again thanks I really enjoyed this video.
Wow what can I say :) this was so interesting and I really enjoyed it, I wish I could get over to the states and visit some of these places. I loved the Cheap Jeep aswell :) being a bit of a radio head what was the long whip antenna on the back ?
Almost ten years later that Fairbanks-Morse would be well worth the trouble to bring out. I just saw one of similar size go for over 225k at auction and the old steam stuff just keeps going higher in price.
I watched the whole thing and enjoyed it very much! Seems like an awesome trip. Would be cool to recreate some of it using GoPro HD cameras, Heck you could re shoot the whole thing on most smartphones today. It would be awesome to see more detail if not go to these places in person. Thanks!
You should put a winch on the cheap jeep so you could pull things out of the way alittle easier ! I have one on my truck and it sure has come in handy !!!
Amazing! I can't think of any ghost towns in Europe. Prypiat near Chernobyl perhaps, but who would want to visit it? Still, I'd like to see a really old ghost town. A Wild West one, with an old saloon, a sheriff's office and tumble weed tumbling through it :-) The place in which you would have found gunslingers and bandits.
Спасибо за видео. Очень впечатляет и заставляет задуматься. Как же быстро всё проходит и забывается. Цените каждую секунду. Дай бог нам всем достойно прожить жизнь.
Hi I live in ky and really enjoyed your trip what a way to spend your vacation love to have been along. Not sure I would go underground but know i could be of some help. My only question is you don't seem to be worried about snakes or other vermin. Jim
Well guys, that was a very interesting video, I tried to follow you're exploits on Google Earth, however many are not listed. I have one suggestion however, when you guys go into old mines, I wish you would use better flashlights, or at least more of them. But all in all, a great and fun video to watch.
This was nicely done. The only suggestion I have is to have your narration sound less like you are reading it from a script. I realize you are, but a more conversational way of speaking would improve this video. Please don't take this as anything but a suggestion. I enjoyed the video very much.

I'll bet there were a lot of times you wish you had left the doors on the car.

You guys kick ass. This is the coolest video on youtube. Your production value is priceless.
Very cool documenting these places before they're all gone
Thank you very much for your kind words. We have more than enough footage to make another video. We are just way too busy at the moment to do it.
As a Ricketts from England I loved your film many thanks....
I love this video and keep coming back to watch it. I hope you still have the cheap jeep ! Looks like you guy's had a lot of fun doing it. You should make more of these kind of films so we can all go along. Thanks for sharing it with us !

Moving that rock by committee. ;)
Hey, I just came across your show while researching. The cheap jeep is genius! You guys rock! Thank you

I would love to go Ghost Town and Mining Camp hunting in the future. What I love about the U.S. Is that it is so vast, the Government allows these towns to rot away rather than knock them down
Why not? It works out well if you work in the mines or sell supplies and food to the miners.
Keep the great video's coming Steve! been following KD radio and your ghost town adventures for quite a few years now

I loved the video, thanks guys!

Could that also be used to clear an oar chute, I wonder.
Great video but you really need better lights!
grate video thanks for posting. I enjoyed it big time.
good seeing how things got done back in the olden days , thumbs up cheers ,
great video. really enjoyed watching. we have a few of these old gems here in our area of Northern California as well.
loved this thanx for sharing your exploits i hope the cheep jeep is going strong and if you ever go on another similar tour you will post another epic video like this one

Wait you left Gary, At least Gary was smart enough not to go down into some of the mines.
Enjoyed thanks

My brothers U.K. version of a proper jeep caught fire. Ironically, in a car wash, in a petrol station!
this was a great video me and my grandpa go to some of the mines in arizona.
I like what a little kid wrote in a letter to God before her family left for Bodie. It said something like good by Lord. We're going to Bodie
Any word if these guys are making a comeback or not. Like mostly everyone here I have watched this again and again. I enjoy this video so much and hope to see more soon.
Love this video. Please post more

Have fun!!
Thank You. I am glad you enjoyed it.
How old is this film ? It seems it was made long ago ! Great video ! I love this kind of adventures. Thanks for sharing it with us !
You should put a winch on the cheap jeep so you could pull things out of the way alittle easier ! I have one on my truck and it sure has come in handy !!!
Thank you for posting this. Did they make any more videos? I came across this video just going down a ghost towns of the West rabbit hole.
Interesting, and like Steve's Last name.
I staked claims Troy and a couple of the other sites you visited. I found a cougar skull in one of Troy's adits. It's on my mantel now.
Amazing! I can't think of any ghost towns in Europe. Prypiat near Chernobyl perhaps, but who would want to visit it? Still, I'd like to see a really old ghost town. That was so long ago, I really don't remember. I think it was in the 1940s but I can't be sure. I've seen a LOT of old newspapers since then.
I wonder when this was filmed, I've been to several locations shown and time and vandellas have taken a toll
cool video.
good video , make more
Thank you for your comments. I know I was rather "mellow", but that was intentional. Perhaps I was too mellow.
Wish they had some way to preserve those buildings.
Bodie is in California. It is maintained in a state of "arrested decay" by the park service.
Спасибо за видео. Очень впечатляет и заставляет задуматься. Как же быстро всё проходит и забывается. Цените каждую секунду. Дай бог нам всем достойно прожить жизнь.
Thank you for your kind comment.
Cool, footage. When was this made? I wonder how many of those old places are still intact now.
@ 14:20 ole Boy working shovel head seems to be packing heat.
Love the cheep Jeep!
I hear if you take any artifacts from Bodie you are cursed
Is that true?
P.S. great video thank you
Hi I live in ky and really enjoyed your trip what a way to spend your vacation love to have been along. Not sure I would go underground but know i could be of some help. My only question is you don't seem to be worried about snakes or other vermin. Jim
Cool
I want more please !!
I believe what you called steam engines at Sprucemont are actually compressors.
You are correct. It was made many years ago
Well guys, that was a very interesting video, I tried to follow you're exploits on Google Earth, however many are not listed. I have one suggestion however, when you guys go into old mines, I wish you would use better flashlights, or at least more of them. But all in all, a great and fun video to watch.
Great video! Of american história!
Thanks
So the leson is never build you home in a mining town :P
thanks
What was the date on the newspaper in the abandoned ranch?
and you guys will pick the parts from the cars
epic
But when the mining is over you gota move
Correct
We have considered it
What video editing software did you use to make this? Please try to remember
This was nicely done. The only suggestion I have is to have your narration sound less like you are reading it from a script. I realize you are, but a more conversational way of speaking would improve this video. Please don't take this as anything but a suggestion. I enjoyed the video very much.
We did find that someone staked a claim in Troy.
Does it cost money to visit Bode ?
