- Hey guys! I cannot believe it has been another year up here. What a wild ride this journey continues to be. This past year has seen a lot get done, along with the hiccups that come with any big project like this. Thist past MONTH has seen some fun new updates - my best bottle find yet, a new cabin project, new history I've never know before, and even a mine mapping project that I'm very excited for in 2023.

I'm not good with heights but I'm an electrician and a good plumber and framer etc.
As a young man we would camp in Saline Valley and explore it on motorcycles in the mid 1970's. Our route into the valley would be up the mountain from Keeler past the junction to Cerro Gordo. We never went there but it was always a curiosity. I am amazed someone like you has come along with so much enthusiasm to preserve it's legacy. You have all the qualities it takes to make this project happen: promotional and social media skills, financial resources, a strong love of adventure and the outdoors, and most of all a true dedication to preserving this history for the public. This could happen at numerous places, but somehow fate led you to this one. I have to say I am truly impressed with your enthusiasm and determination and have enjoyed following your journey.

Three years already. I remember stumbling onto this channel while I was on the clock at my old, boring, soul sucking day job when you posted your third or fourth video and I immediately had this longing for change, and growth, and something new. And here I am now, out of that old job, running my own successful photography business thanks in part to you Brent & to Cerro Gordo. Appreciate you more than you know!

C. Conrad and co Budweiser bottle 1880 had a cork stopper. It's worth about $70. Please keep it (Derrrr..... I know you will) it will look better at it's home. I can always see by the buildings, the history and the magnificent vistas, why you love it there so much. I'll be retired in 2024, I would love to come and offer some carpentry skills to build some rustic cabins.

Brent, I never cease to be amazed at your eloquence. I don't know how many takes you need for one of your monologues. Nearly 3 years now. I remember stumbling on the first video you ever made only a few hours after it posted - the algorithm gods were kind to me. Haven't missed a single upload since.
If I ever get enough money to fly and holiday over from Australia I'd love to come and visit and give a hand for a day or two!
Uggghhhh I *DO* map things for a living, both with imagery and lidar, and i would freaking LOVE to be able to work on this project. I also have family history in oil and mining in california and it would be super cool to be down there and learn some more. but I'm in Canada and the logistics of the work visa etc would be challenging, even if I worked my normal job (which is remote work anyway).... wish i could make this work, i'd love to be part of it!

Do it. Make it work. There's always ways to get past the general barriers put up for "just anyone"!
Generally, if you are coming for a visit, you don’t need to worry about a work visa, especially if you do not work with an American owned business. If you work for a Canadian business and just want to do your normal Canadian job, you should be able to, without a visa, cause people from all over the world travel places for vacation and do work while on vacation. I think you’d only run into an issue if someone wanted to hire you to do a job in America and you are not American. I’m not sure that’s what Brent was looking for, but it may be. If you just came for vacation to stay at Cerro Gordo and just did some work to help him, there shouldn’t be an issue. It’s very nice that you’d like to help him.

@@GhostTownLiving *Taliesen West, the Frank Lloyd Wright architectural school in Scottsdale AZ tasks final year students with design of a small (if not tiny) home that is actually constructed on site, and then dismantled at end of year. Many international students, etc face prohibitive shipping costs etc and these projects show up in local landfills or for scrap. You should buy a few senior projects, ship them to the base of the mountain, put them on an aluminum lifting platform, and blackhawk them up to the top of the mountain. Instant $300 a night AirBnB and maybe each home has a gofundme link for the original architect to get some recurring income or business referrals, who knows?*

3 years! Wow i remember the video of you driving up the snowy rd in your 2wd truck. While i havent caught every episode i appreciate the time and effort you put into not only the town but into documenting and sharing with us!
Cerro Gordo should have a VR room where visitors can use VR headsets to explore the mapped out mines without having to go in them. The 3D mapping will be immensly valuable Brent, and I hope that you and those who help you out will be able to capture as much of the mines as possible. Thank you for your devotion to perserving Cerro Gordo and its history!
Then have a 3d modeler make it so you can be different creatures with each creature having a different way they can explore..

Small correction, Budweiser is named after a town called Ceske Budejovice (in German, Budweis) which is not situated in Bavaria but in South Bohemia (Czech Republic). The original Czech beer from "Budejovicky Budvar" (in English, Budweiser Budvar) is still popular, and there have been trademark disputes with US Budweiser, which is now sold mostly as "Bud" in the EU. Amazing find, and Happy New Year!!
You're right. I was in once visiting Ceske Budejovice, which is around 150km from my hometown Vienna in Austria and can remember very well visiting the big pub whre you can drink the original Budweiser. Fantastic beer, which is here in Vienna also available in a couple of pubs and restaurants as fresh draftbeer. What did amaze me most, was that in the czech republic still people would come to a pub, carrying a milk can and they would carry it filled with fresh draftbeer directly home to their families. I think, that's why they are drinking the greatest amount of beer/year in the world as far as I know.

They say that you die twice, the first time is when you die physically and your second death is the last time a person says your name or remembers you. By re-living the lives of these people from the past and documenting their perspective, these people that have probably been forgotten a long time ago and then re-discovered by you. In a way, you're bringing them back to life and i think its kind of beautiful.
As someone who has done mapping with a laser scanner, a leica-esque laser scanner may be a bit overkill, but, there are a few things to make what you're doing more of an official "definitive" scan of the mine. -Edit: I made a really well thought out post, giving tips and tricks.. lol.. and it truncated everything. I'll summarize - Put up individually numbered and measured targets, cut the entire job into small overlapping (minimum 3 overlapping targets). Small handheld scanners have a habit of truncating walls that it thinks are the same. Light up the mine as best you can. Get the main shaft done first. Use a drone for that If possible) make sure that at least 2 targets link back to the main shaft from each floor. Get lots of hard drives. When deciding what hardware/software you want to use, look for ones that drop to common formats, not proprietary. Get it to go all the way up the main shaft to the building. If you have any questions, reach out to me and I'll answer any questions I can.

how nice would it be, if you would have your own podcast, where in you would invite guests that are somehow related to the town or are part of your team or just friends and family. And then you would just talk with them about their thoughts about the town, the memories you share with them and so and so on. While drinking a nice beer or a tea in the winter, sitting in the gordon house and I could somehow imagine, even though I don’t know you, that you would have soo much fun doing it and it would give us much more detail about the people behind cerro gordo. I think we would all love to hear more about them too and it gives them a platform.

I love how you've been there for 3 years completely immersed in it and you just know learned of essentially a second smaller subtown and mining operation. This just goes to show the complexity of history and the eroding of our knowledge of the past that comes with time. This is why you do what you do! To rediscover and preserve what has been lost. A tip if you want to save all the bottles you find, you could always make a bottle wall in one of the cabins. A lot of ghost towns in the west had some form of them and they’re always really cool to look at!
Hey! I'm a geospatial professional who works with photogrammetry (the 3D scanning technology polycam utilizes).
You should look into professional licensed surveyors or mapping specialists. Polycam is cool and revolutionary for consumers but at the end of the day it's an iPhone app and doesn't compare to industry level LiDAR scanners like the Leica RTC350 and a professional to process the data.
You could have engineering grade digital scans of the interior of the mines. The results would be high resolution and absolutely stunning. It would be essential for serious archiving and future construction projects.
You could even have them fly a LiDAR drone over the property and make a 3D digital twin of Cerro Gordo itself!

Wow. Been super busy with life lately so I haven’t been watching but when you talked about giving that speech in the campsite you setup the first day. I remembered that. I have been watching your videos for about a week or so & I’m definitely addicted to them. I love your stories from the 1800’s! I love the history from that era & when i watch your videos it makes me think of Little House on the Prairie. I still love that show today & movies of settlers in the west. I would very much like to vist Cerro Gordo maybe next summer when the hotel is finished. I’ve also wanted to visit Tombstone Arizona as well. Those places are loaded with history. Please keep up the videos & I will keep watching them.
Wonderful that you've been able to restore or add history to Cerro Gordo, our family has a long history in Nevada of hard rock mining, and even have 2 ghost towns that were once thriving mining camps that were named after my ancestors. I was taught mine exploration at a young age by my grandfather, a Tonopah and Goldfield miner, and while not taking them inside the mines themselves, I've been able to share the ghost town experience by camping and exploring sites. Your actions, are a small part of my dreams to keep early American history alive in the west, and I love the work you're doing. As we explore the hundreds of ghost towns this summer, we'll keep your continuing adventure of Cerro Gordo in our hearts...

Use to dig old soda bottles out of privy's with my dad in 60's and 70's he cleaned them with denture tablets and bb's for bb guns. He also used plane dish soap swirling bb's around in liquid carefully so as to not break the glass. He would drain it to dry and save bb's for the next bottle.

A VR tour someone could download for a small fee or even a donation, would be amazing! Old time miners could even be inserted in the footage? It would be a great learning tool for students of all grade levels and or anyone who loves this kind of history? Perfect for those who would love to experience what it's like in underground structures but from the safety of their own living room's?

If you want to put a recording studio in that building then the main thing and I mean MAIN thing you need is a constant. reliable power source. Don't even consider starting anything else until you have that in place.
Solar panels and wind power would be a great way to power that. Green and simple power not anything else.
@@MaliaWiederien With all due respect they would be terrible. A recording studio requires a clean and constant power source, neither solar nor wind provide that. The typical power consumption of a small studio is around 10x the energy consumption of a small home. There are many variables that affect this mainly the type and amount of equipment being used. The last thing you want happening is a failed recording because the desk shuts down. You can't run a professional or amateur studio like that. It's counter productive.
@@MaliaWiederien Maybe, if you have enough wattage in your panels and IF you have a large enough battery system, with a clean power unit. But what about those times when the sun doesn't shine, the panels are covered with snow, etc? Wind power is a maintenance nightmare, if you aren't aware. A backup generator will be needed. Idealistic platitudes are no substitute for a system that actually works.
The recording room itself should have no parallel surfaces, and a balance of 60% dead (absorbing) and 40% live (reflective) surfaces. The control room should be similar, I've done a few of these. Sonex foam or other is good for absorbing sound.
Power, an actual water source, roads that don't wash to nothing everytime it rains... it makes no sense to invest into that dilapidated town. This would bankrupt an individual, but because it relies on free labor and handouts, it hasn't yet.
I don't know how a permit was issued to build a hotel considering there is no septic or running water... can't be grandfathered because there's nothing left of the old hotel to build on.

This is probably one of the coolest projects I've seen to date. one day when I have kids and we visit Cerro Gordo I'll be able to tell them that I remember the day when the first ghost town video came onto my youtube feed. lol I won't pretend that I didn't think it was a weird idea but you've really made it something else. Something inspirational.
Amazing progress over the last three years or so! It's been a joy to follow you and I'm so appreciative that you have shared this journey with us. When you finish 3D mapping the mines, it would be so cool if they were added to Google Maps! Through it, folks with a VR system could experience going through the mines, too! It would be an amazing opportunity to share these adventures with the world in a new way. Cheers to a productive 2023 at Cerro Gordo !

This has a great chance of becoming a amazing tourist attraction 10-20 years down the line. A complete set of maps of all the mines in a book would sell very well in the gift shop, or even as merch.

Many of us have discovered your channel and vicariously live through you and feel your drive, adventures and even your fears. Think I have watched every episode of this. Love it. The interesting history, the beautiful scenary, the evolution of the rebirth of the town. Its amazing really. Ironically Brent is sorta the Modern Day Belshaw. I think that is an interesting twist. I think it was fascinating how you just discovered that new mine addition. Just crazy how there was so much going on all over that area high in the sky. I've always been drawn to the old west and Billy the Kid days etc so watching this almost makes some of that come to life in a sense. I always wonder with all the mines there are there, is there nothing left to be mined? Seems like somewhere in the vast tunnel system there would be more opportunity to discover gold or something else. No way those old timers found everything. That aspect is intriguing. Be fun to volunteer time to help do something up there to help progress the overall project so to speak. Watching it on youtube is fun but seeing it and being in the element would be amazing. I have enjoyed watching your progression while living in Cerro Gordo. It has brought back a lot of good memories for me and I have learned so much about the town that I didn't know. I just wish when I was younger that I had a greater appreciation of all the history there. I stayed there with my Father three or four times in the 1990's. As a Geologist, my Father spent a lot of time there visiting with the previous owners and surveying the area and I wish I could ask him so many questions but he has late stage Dementia. He also specialized in mapping and I know if he could comprehend, he would offer so much insight in the mapping of that area. I also know he would appreciate everything that you are trying to preserve there. Happy New Year!
