Are Swiss Watches Really Better Than Japanese Watches?
For a long time, the Swiss were historically considered to be the best watchmakers, but this narrative changed greatly during the mid-twentieth century. Had the Japanese not proven their mettle as skillful watchmaking people, the Swiss monopoly over the watchmaking industry would have been impossible to overthrow. Today, watch lovers all across the world are in the market seeking either a Swiss or Japanese watch, and often being indecisive about which watchmaker to settle for.
In today's video we look at whether Swiss watches are actually better than Japanese watches looking at popular watch makers such as Seiko, Miyota, Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe.

I recently visited a friend of mine who is a Patek/Rolex watchmaker. After looking at my Grand Seiko with a loupe, he said that if Seiko can do such good finishing of the dial on an $8500 watch, it is inexcusable for Patek to do inferior finishing on watches that cost 10 times as much.

Thats because the cost of manufacturing in Switzerland is higher. Also, seiko is a huge corporation compared to Patek and rolex. I will say rolex holds back manufacturing in order to control pricing.

Seiko started making clocks in 1891, watches in 1895, and wrist watches in 1913. The first “Seiko” branded watch was in 1924. They remained concentrated in Asia until the Viet Nam war, when American soldiers started buying them and bringing them back to the US. Seiko competed in in the Neuchatel Observatory competition in 1967, where it placed second and third. The competition was canceled after that year. They are not new in the world of quality watches.

Japanese watches really are more for budget minded & practical buyers, while Swiss watches have moved further upmarket. Luxury Swiss watches generally are as practical as using a Bugatti sports car to drive daily to work in a busy downtown city; while most Japanese watches are as practical as instead driving a Honda, Toyota or Subaru.
Lets face it, Swiss can't compete dollar for dollar, so they have gone upmarket, catering to those that love the cachet of the "Swiss Made" watch.
Honestly, I can't imagine the hassle of servicing Swiss brands like Arnold & Son, F.P. Journe, Etienne Schwartz, & other micro lux brands with in house movements.

A Grand Seiko or The Citizen is unequivocally superior to any equivalently priced Swiss watch from the major brands. This assessment does not necessarily extend to microbrands. Additionally, in terms of movement technology, Seiko and Citizen are decades ahead, the 9F and the 0100 movements and not matched by anything Swiss.

Same as with Cars: various German top of the line cars drive better, but apart from maybe Porsche, are notoriously prone to mechanical problems (nowadays also electronic and software). So, if you really want reliability, stick to Japanese and many of them give great fun in driving too, like Lexus, Nissan Z, various Honda's and Acura. Seiko and Citizens (Miyota) have top of the line movements too nowadays. ❤

I've personally owned over the past 23 years a lot of high end Swiss made and several high end Seiko Japannese divers. High end luxury Seiko watches at the current moment with the newer releases of the SAL series and upwards but especially the SLA models, for the moment, offer unmatched hand finished with literal hand assembled grand seiko 8L35 movements that are every bit equal to or arguably a step above a lot of the Swiss brands in every aspect for about 35 percent less the price. I know this from intimate first hand experience being that I've owned a great many of both and especially over the past 5 to 7 years. It's certainly a very debatable and subjective topic that is simply unable to be irrefutably given a superior winner other than luxury seiko just for the moment offering far more for 3 grand than Swiss being nearly 6 grand for a truly comparable timepiece. Seiko is about to nearly double their retail with their high end luxury that will totally negate their better value for similar like timepices. Basically both are going to have inflated their retail prices so insanely high that the entire luxury high end watch sector or very small market share thereof to go under and literally be all but gone. Both will end up by the very definition of self imposed over competing inflation totally destroy their already small and fragile market share they currently hold right now if barely that very little like I believe they to have. Big business greed in which I just don't agree irrevocably repeats itself as indicated by history. Always.

Grand Seiko can easy compete with the Quality of Rolex and AP.
IMHO Rolex Watches are not so Special that the Hype and No1 Status is justified, Rolex has the best Marketing and a clean Lineup which never changed much since the 70s. I can respect that.
For a solid Watch under 500€ I would go allways for a japanese Watch like a Seiko Presage, Orient Star or Citizen. If I want a High End Daily Watch I go with a Grand Seiko SLGA007, if I want a Diver ill stick to a Blancpain Fithy Fathoms, If I want something really expencive with Fancy Design and Complications I would go for a Vacheron Constantin or Breguet.

As usual you get what you pay for , i have swiss and japanese watches from all sorts of brands , i have no preference to be honest , i buy what i like from japanese to swiss new or vintage , both countries make good watches in my opinion , but as the guy in the Video said Swiss watches have still a better reputation and keep their value better than their japanese counterparts .

No one can beat Japanese quality. Swiss watches are over priced pieces of jewelry, and often unreliable. Yes, Swiss may be pioneers but Japanese have led the way in innovation and quality. It is like BMW vs Lexus. One is more reliable than the other.

Come on, Now a day a watch is just a piece of jewry, the most expensive mechanical watch can't tell time as accurate as the cheapest phone. Why care about the accuracy of the moment at all.

    • @seanlin1202
      @seanlin1202 Před rokem +1

Accuracy is part of the beauty of a mechanical watch and highlights the complexity behind it. You wouldn't want a mechanical watch that's off by 30 minutes a day
