I Had No Idea “Expedition” Cruising Would Be Like This

  • Before going on the expedition cruise to Antarctica I am just back from, I rather naively thought that an expedition cruise was basically a regular cruise that went to more remote destinations. I was wrong. And here is why and what would have been good to have known.

Went on my first expedition cruise 2020 before everything went crazy. Travelled solo to Antarctica from Punta Arenas with Hurtigruten, didn't pay a solo subsidy. Thoroughly enjoyed lectures - what was stressed was don't damage the environment and don't pat the wildlife. Had penguins nibbling at camera strap on several occassions - Don't Pat the Wildlife (hard to comply with).
Have had both knees replaced and spinal fusion, had no major issues with landings & activities, crew assisted where required. Oldest passenger that I met was a chap from Norway, recovering from a stroke, travelling with his son - he was 80.
Would recommend to all, one for the wildlife interaction, two for the remoteness, three for the sheer majesty of the place, four for the diversity of the passengers (27 nationalities from 388 passengers), five for the swim at Stonington Island (69°S & water temp -0.5° c, got my certificate!). Would do it again in a heart beat.

what an amazing experience you've had! I will be going to Antarctica with Hurtigruten this December during Christmas and I cannot wait. Just a question though: Was it physically hard to walk thru the snow/exhausting taking the on land/on shore excursions?

The fact that these expedition cruises can and will divert can really add to the experience as well. While in the Galapagos the captain took us over to an active volcano in the pre-dawn darkness. Just amazing to see. The other thing that was interesting with the excursions there is they generally did have two choices with each stop, typically a longer trek or a shorter trek and they would just divide up the zodiacs based on how many people wanted to do each. We'd pick the night before. It worked out well. And as you said, it's a much more active cruise than normal, so having days you could choose to take the shorter trek worked out for many.

I went in 2018. The days were planned less than 24hr in advance. We missed a shore landing due to a blizzard. (Amazing sight) Our scheduled route was blocked by ice, and we had to backtrack. Our last day was totally re-arranged and the crew ended up just finding an unexplored bay and letting us have a few hours on the zodiacs just riding along the shoreline. I overheard a couple ladies complaining about the pre-cruise medical clearance, and they were saying that if anyone got sick, the Coast Guard would run out and pick us up. I didn't try to explain how far out of range of rescue we really were. Pack your patience and expect changes. It's an amazing place to visit.

Diversions to see orca or humpback whales would be amazing. Risks understood as well. And it is definitely understood one must know their physical capabilities. My expedition trips were on a small-ish ship (750 pax but limited to 500 for Antarctica). At that time it was actually affordable. My repeat sailings allowed me friendships with the excellent expedition staff-the ornithologist actually had me on the stage to demonstrate wingspan when his PowerPoint failed. I spent time with those folks who absolutely loved what they were doing-within their solid expertise but not their everyday jobs. I’d actually prefer a more bare bones true expedition type trip vs a luxury experience-just my preference. But at current rates and my age I won’t get there again. It’s an unforgettable experience.

We've done half a dozen expedition cruises with Lindblad, and it's true -- we've never done the scheduled itinerary, and we've never regretted the changes. The most extreme was the time we had to lay over at Copenhagen for repairs, and thus missed our stop in Lubeck. Instead, we got an extra day in Copenhagen with a unique visit to the (not yet open to the public) Maersk Opera House and an afternoon in the Royal Danish Museum. Hard to complain. On another occasion, the ship diverted for a couple of hours in the Bay of Biscay to follow a pod of whales. More than worth the delay. And, frankly, 140 other passengers is more than enough...

Very important is to be fit enough to do it all. As I get older I’m dismayed at how much harder it is to walk many miles and do it day after day after day when I travel. And jumping down and climbing up deteriorates so quickly as I’ve aged with a sedentary job. I have to do extra training ahead of time to really enjoy active trips. Hopefully you are in better shape. 👍🏼 I’m sure you’ll have fun.

Those booking expedition cruises should be aware that those types of cruises are much more likely to change key elements than pleasure cruises. Example: A recent passenger who made his own flight arrangements was angry with the cruise line because they changed the port of embarkation, and his non-refundable flight no longer worked. Do not buy non-refundable flights for these, and it’s better to buy door-to-door from the cruise company. There are logistical and ship-supply issues that the cruise companies have limited control over.

The open question people have with these shore excursions is whether you can go the bathroom. The research stops may have bathroom facilities, but not the other excursion stops. Some expedition companies over overnight camping on Antarctica and that includes a potable toilet. However, between the zodiac rides around the shore landings, you could potentially be out in the elements for 3 plus hours, did Silversea or Ponant carry portable toilets for their passengers? Some blog posts say skip the second cup of coffee because you just have to "hold it in" until getting back on the ship.

What really surprised me on the expedition ship I took was that the cabin doors didn't lock.

Sounds like a much better job for the right command crew. Routine is a killer.

I thought this was not your first expedition cruise? I recall several videos on this topic from you.

This was really helpful, Gary! We are booked on the Celebrity Xpedition to the Galapagos in 2023 and really looking forward to it!

I think you should edit out you wearing jeans underneath in the polar area. Its a very bad tip to people not familiar with cold climate. Cotton is a huge no-no in the cold. Its stiff and cluncky and if it get wet it becomes cold and heavy. Wool is much better, if one lair aren't enough put on another one. If thats not enough you can use a fleece pants but thats way to warm in Antarctica in the summertime.
