- My visit to Brunswick including stops at Bowdoin College, the Chamberlain House & Museum and Pine Grove Cemetery where the Chamberlains rest today. We'll see the bullet that nearly killed him, the boots he wore at Gettysburg, his Medal of Honor, and more!

#History #CivilWar
He lived a pretty full life despite the consiquences of his wounds. I can't imagine going through something like that for nearly 50 years.
Facts!
Mosby took shrapnel in the 'groin' and also a bullet a couple inches below the navel. Then likewise lived another 50 years. Glad I've got my cable tv!
I grew up in Brunswick. My first job was at the Hannaford down the street from Chamberlain's house. I did a book report on him in junior high and he is very highly respected in the town. He was such an admirable and brave man.
Such a modest grave for someone that accomplished so much in their life. Guess that's sort of fitting for someone like Chamberlain.
Thank you for letting the scenes of the Chamberlain home speak for themselves.
Love how you present history in an easy manner.
Here’s what you need to know about Joshua chamberlain: He was selected to receive the Confederate surrender at Appomattax. That tells you the regard he was held by among his peers.
And he had his men salute the surrendering soldiers as they marched by.
I just started reading Killer Angels, just read the first chapter on Chamberlin. So perfect timing. Thanks for planting the seeds of history in my head.
An incredible book, anyone who is watching this channel should read it. Great decision making by you!!!!
Good. Book! I am all Southern but like Chamberlain. He was cool.
Suggestion of another good book on the Civil War is "Stars in their Courses -The Gettysburg Campaign" by Shelby Foote. "Killer Angels" is a very good read,
The manliest man of the war. When you run out of ammo, fix your bayonets and charge. Rest In Peace you legend
This was well done sir, thank you! I especially loved you kneeling or crouching before their graves which to me showed a sign of love and respect to these great people. God Bless them and you, thank you!
One of my favorite Generals from the Civil War. I did have the honor to visit his gravesite. At the time, i didnt know about his house or i would have visited too. Thank you for visiting and sharing this.
Had a memorial service for my father today, and seeing this video makes me think of how much he would have loved to sit and watch your videos together with me. Thank you so much for the work you do, and for the smile.
I’m so sorry Dale. My condolences on the loss of your dad. Glad to bring you a smile in your grief.
My son once lived in Maine, only about an hour from Brunswick. I visited him at least four times but unfortunately never visited Joshua Chamberlain's home. Thanks for taking me there!
I'm a big fan of how these videos are presented
I think that it's perfect that a video like this doesn't have any dislikes yet.
you are literally saving my sanity from the chaos that is med school, thank you so much for this superb content.
Glad you are here, I live near this area!
The movie "Gettysburg" is one of my favorite films. Jeff Daniels portrayal of Chamberlain was awesome.
Thanks Chris. Your visit to the Chamberlain house was really interesting. I noticed how flattened the Minie ball had become. Designed to inflict maximum damage.
Vlogging Through History video live from my state? And about one of my heroes?? A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one! Hope you had a great stay and thanks for posting!
I have always been intrigued by Chamberlain, have read anything I can find on him. I refer to him as a renaissance man. An amazing human being.
Very cool!! Love the history on location videos. Can’t wait for more!
Awesome production and presentation. You're doing everyone a great service with these videos.
Really enjoy this Vlogs on historical Places, Hope to see more of it in the future
Have been looking forward to this.
Another great video, thank you.
Fantastic video. This is one of my favorite channels on CZcams
What a school teacher he was! Can't wait to watch, just got here
Great vlog again. Love these type of videos. Keep it up!
VTH is the best. I remember Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain from Michael Shaara. Had to read it over the summer for school as a junior. Had a friend graduate from Bowdoin College.
This video was incredible.
Nice doc. Good job!!!!!
Favorite history channel
Another great video.
Outstanding, very well presented. Thank you for posting this.
I am a retired high-school history teacher, and I love history as much as I did 50 years ago.
That's awesome, Gary. Thank you for your years of working passing on your love of history to your students!
@@VloggingThroughHistory Thank you, my friend.
I’m from Connecticut but now live in Portland, and have a 20th Maine flag hanging in my window. Ive never made it to the museum but I’m sure to go now
Nice to see my hometown. Now go back in January! 😁
Awesome video
Terrific. Thank you.
Thumbs up just for proper pronunciation of Bowdoin.
When did the Bedouin migrate to Arabia?
I recognize that mustache and brow without reading the title.
Very cool and informative video.
I was raised in a town near Brunswick… well Brunswick, Germany but I guess that counts too 😂
Keep on doing what you do!
Brunswick, Maine! I was born there!
If you have a chance to read his book you will be amazed to discover all he accomplished. His recounting of the Appomattox Surrender is quite moving. His dignity and empathy are inspiring.... he was in the right place at the right time! 🇺🇸🎩🇺🇸.. TY Vlog....
Greatest friggin' Mainah that evah lived, bub!
Interesting. When I visited the home in 2008, the master bedroom was closed off because it hadn't been renovated yet and Chamberlain's medal of honor was in the possession of the Bowdoin College library.
Definitely best 'stache of the Civil War!
I had that moustache when I married my now ex wife she said "one of these mornings you are going to wake up and that thing is going to be gone" I told her fine as long as you don't mind waking up the next day bald.
Check out Edward Godfrey's moustache in the 7th cavalry before the little born insane!
I'm from Alabama, I'll be in Maine Saturday. I plan on seeing General Chamberlains grave.
Would recommend visiting some known places or Monuments In American history to somewhat reach a much wider audience Like Abraham Lincoln's Place of Rest or Stonewell Jackson's Burial place etc
Didn't you include Brevet Major General Thomas Worcester Hyde - Bowdoin alumni, class of '61 - also a Medal of Honor recipient?
Was also at Gettysburg, and so on(?)
Another very accomplished American Civil War veteran & founder of the nearby Bath Iron Works.
Enjoyed, thank you!
Do you plan on going to the Lincoln Memorial? Because I would love to see you talking about it
All the way in DC?! That's quite a trip. I am from Ohio myself and went there in 2007 May. I still have photos from my 6th grade field trip for 3 days. It was remarkable and not bad weather I believe. Went through PA VA and a bit of Maryland too.
@@michaelaburns734 oh i am sorry i am not American nor know where the states are in America, so idk how far away it is. But i feel it would be really cool to see him talk about and show the memorial
@@michaelaburns734 so it’s a long trip to DC from Ohio but not a long trip to Maine from Ohio?
I would love to see you react to Legends and Lies series!
Guys get this likes he needs to react to the Victoria cross documentary and greatest raid of all by Jeremy Clarkson
Very interesting, thank you. We plan on coming up to maine, from where we live in Ohio. I have always been interested in his life, even though I'm 74. 2-19-2022
Hey vlogging through history I just visited the alamo yesterday
Your breadth of knowledge is quite grand. How do you ingrain all these historical figures into your memory? Is it by reading alone, or do you recreate them in the here and now, by talking about them...gossip in a manner of speaking?
"Did you hear what Sherman did? He married his adoptive fathers daughter!"
"Oh dear!
I obsessively study topics I find interesting. Usually when I know I’m going to visit somewhere I study in the weeks leading up to my visit.
Do you have any other videos planned on your trip to maine? Just curious, because as a local it's cool seeing a somewhat not recognized state get a little attention. If you haven't heard if it, one of the larger massacres of colonialists during king Williams war.
Nice...
"We have seen more suffering than any men should see. If there is to be an end to this war, it Must be an end that justifies the Means...As God as my witness, there is no other I hold dearer to my heart, but if your life, or mine are part of the price to pay to free all men, then let God's will be done"
That is a use of the "end justifies the means" I've never seen before.
Hey can you do reallifelore: every country England has invaded visualised. Be interesting to see your perspective on all the battles and invasions
Jeff Daniels played Chamberlain in _Gettysburg_ (and Washington elsewhere).
Ken Burns' _The Civil War_ says Chamberlain, as President of Bowdoin College, managed over time to teach all courses, except Math.
Vary interesting
I was just down in that area over the past few days! (Yes, people live north of Bangor)
Bangor is quite north of Brunswick lol, but yes people do live north of Bangor.
@@buzzellalec yeah I realize that sounds dumb but people realize there’s a world north of Brunswick, but usually not north of Bangor lol
@@evolvedgamer1205 yes very true, anything north of Bangor is "The County"
@@buzzellalec True but not that many live north of Caribou where my grandmother grew up. :-)
Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain A legend in his own mind.
Read Ron C. Whites new book. Chamberlain had reason to be, but wasn’t like that.
So are you going to get time to check out the 5th of Maine Museam in Portland?
Kinda of a modest grave really. Expected something a bit more grander.
Yeah. There are quite a few graves in that small cemetery much grander than his.
Oh my god you walked past my house
I have nothing to add. I like your videos though. 😁
I just realized he’s near my home lmao
FIX BAYONETS!!!
*Edelman pumps up the jam*
Hi
I wonder where is Joshua Chamberlain brother Thomas Chamberlain is buried in
He’s buried in Castine, Maine.

Could you explain the context of the bust between two flags, the right flag being a Confederate flag?
I couldn't quite make out whose bust that was.
It’s Grant. The left flag was the 5th Corps.
@@VloggingThroughHistory,
Thank you very much.
React to mughal empire or some Indian history
Don't call me Lawrence.
Looks like favoritism
Didn't a musket or rifle bullet in the war cause worse injuries than modern handgun bullets (statistically)?
Definitely. Low velocity, soft lead. It destroyed any body part it touched.
@@VloggingThroughHistory Really impressive to survive six such injuries.
Hey look a statue that wasn’t torn down
Is that a local cemetery or a military cemetery?
A small local cemetery next to the Bowdoin College campus.
Local cemetery.
@VloggingThroughHistory I know it's not your expertise but can we get some viking content? 😬☺️
Greatest Maine governor
forget the grave, we want to see the body.
Hey i recently found your channel thanks to the algorithm (for once a good recommendation)
I was wondering if you would be able to react to a different style of video, still history but its music
A band called iced earth has a 3 in one song about the battle of Gettysburg (thats its name too) Its really great. If you would check it out that would be cool, video or not you might like it.
either way, great videos and i have been binge watching all morning
Oh, I remember that one when I first started with heavy metal.
Wow.. died of his wounds? He's was 86 when he died if I count correctly. The wounds he suffered were from 1864 - 65. He lived another 50 years after that. Do we really know that those wounds really killed him? In this age it would be normal for a healthy person to die of old age.
Yes they really did kill him. He suffered all his life. Almost died multiple times. He had debilitating infections that made him bedridden for weeks. Couldn’t bend over all the way, stuff like that.
Thanks for your explanation. It's quite interesting how he lived such long life with all these health problems.
For me as a german, it's really interesting that Chamberlain asked King Wilhelm of Prussia in 1870 for permission to join the prussian army in the fight against Imperial France. (www.lurker00.com/joshua1/jlcgov2.htm) Can you confirm that and do you have further information? Best wishes from Pomerania.
