- A review of the HP ProBook 445 G7 (AMD Ryzen 7 4700U 14 inch business laptop)
Hey, hope you are well and safe? HP’s latest ProBook series the 445 G7 takes the same design cues as its predecessor and sprinkles some new processor magic dust at it. Boy, is it a good one, the highly anticipated AMD Ryzen 7 4700U on this review model. Is it all that it is stacked up to be?

This is one of THE best review i have ever seen for a laptop, and you covered almost everything including the competition, super...
Glad you liked it! 👍
Indeed
What a calm and serene review! This is what reviews should be like! Just subscribed. Many CZcamsrs play with intonation of their voice too much and raise their voice when not needed. I just can't stand it.
You deserve a lot more subscribers!
Amazing job of covering all the essential bullet points for a laptop within 9 minutes.
Thanks, appreciate it a lot 👍
excellent review Dove. Concise and simple. Thank you.
this was a confusingly excellent review. i'm hecking impressed.
i wish there'd been some mention of the USB-C functionality (charging, display out, etc)
This is the only English language review I have found on this laptop, so I really appreciate it. You did an outstanding job on covering all the points that are important to me. I was able to find this model with 16 GB of RAM and the optional 1000 nit screen for a very reasonable price. It should be here in about two weeks and I am incredibly excited! I will check back with you soon to let you know how I like it.
To clarify, I ordered the 15.6 inch model.
Excellent news and thank you. Just working on the final additions to the HP EliteBook 845 G7 review (AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 4750U) The performance on this 8-core twin of the 4800U is a beast! 👌
@@Dovecomputers If I could have afforded the EliteBook 845 or 855, I definitely would have gotten it, but when I saw that the price was in the $2,000 range, I knew I'd have to make a concession, so the ProBook seemed to be the best compromise. If I had my druthers, the all metal chassis of the EliteBook would have been the ticket.
@@Dovecomputers amazing review! Thanks for your hard work! and greetings from Ukraine.
mate you are the man, I wanted to buy this laptop but there weren't many reviews about, you my friend got me with any information I needed. Good Job!!
So did you buy it and what do you think about it
@@mrpentium I recently got it for a college course, I really like it as the review says it's great for office and Indoors, but not for outside, Its really powerful and quiet to run I would highly recommend it!
excellent complete review
Very good review! Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Have an HP ProBook 455 G7 with Ryzen 5 4500U (8Gb,256GB) laptop in today. Does anybody want me to review it? 😉
Do it already! 🤤🤩
Yes, I am looking for that laptop's review! :)
Yes please! What do you recommend me between a HP Probook 455 G7 and an Asus Vivobook S15 M533IA-BQ097T? Both laptops are equipped with 15,6", Ryzen 7 4th gen, 16gb RAM, 512SSD.
@@Lodororada Both are good laptops except for one major weakness, the poor display. Both have average panels and brightness levels are poor, ok for office indoor work only. The 455 G7 has an RJ45 port whereas the ASUS doesn't have one if that matters. 👍
@@Dovecomputers Thank you very much! Are those laptops good enough for watching movies?
It looks to me that all laptops under 1000€ don't have good screens.
Do you have any recommendation for a laptop with good specs and better screen around the same price range?
I would love to see a comparison video between the HP ProBook line and the HP EliteBook line. The EliteBook with comparable specs is 50% more than the ProBook (comparing the ProBook 455 with the EliteBook 855), so it would be interesting to determine if the build quality justifies the higher price. It seems that the ProBook strikes a good balance, however.
Also, it's worth mentioning that I have watched this video and shared it at least a half dozen times. Not only is the content great, I really enjoy your mellow, conversational delivery (not shouty) and your fair critiques, such as the lackluster 250 nit screen. Here in the US, you can opt for either a 500 or an incredible 1,000 nit screen, which I ordered with mine. Not sure if you can spec it that way in the UK.
Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it! The ProBook vs EliteBook would be a great video to make. I don't think personally there's much in it now. Maybe more security features, Thunderbolt port, etc. The new ZBook's like the Firefly, Create/Studio G7, they will be cannibalising EliteBook sales and for the money I would go for these rather than the EliteBook's. (Having said that, watch my EliteBook 845 G7 Sure View 1000 nits review out any day now!) Waiting for the ProBook/EliteBook G8's to come out this month for full reviews and fingers crossed, a comparison video! 👍
HP now offers the 4650 & 4750 Ryzen Pro CPUs here in the US with this model! Plus, they cost the same for the extra SMT threads as the 4500/4700u cpus! Just ordered the 4650u for under $600usd and will upgrade the memory later.
That's exciting news! No sign of this Ryzen Pro version in the UK yet. 😞
what a nice review
You can add HDD, other than the SSD?
Great review.
Good to see a left handed laptop for once, but is there also a right handed version?
this review is better than any American made porn!
😂
Best Review . Thanks dear
Glad you liked it 👍
Can 2.5" ssd be installed in place of hdd? If yes then 2.5" ssd to 3.5"hdd bay bracket is required or can it placed without any addational thing?
Have you tried using 2.5" ssd there? Does it move ?
This laptop is exactly what I need for web development
Should be perfect for it. 👍
I think I'm sold on this
Nice Review, can you allocate more Ram as Videomemory in the bios? If yes, how much?

Hi, is it worth buying in 2024?
For outlook, 365 office, and light games? 😊
Just got the 4500u version with 16gb ram and 512gb storage for 650€. Incredible price performance ratio!
Thank you for this review, subscribed!
Wow, that is a good price! 👍
I got the 4700u with 16gb ram and 512 gb storage for 680 dollars (580 euros). I live in Switzerland. Was a special offer :-)
i found the same hp probook with the 4500u processor, are you satisfied by the build quality especialy the hinges that can broke easily on some entrey laptop models (business laptops like elitebook or thinkpad come with metalic hinges but i don't know if it's also the case for this probook ) ? and is the ips screen ok with office work and watching videos from youtubes or a bit annoying if you compare it to suprerior models like elitebook, latitude or thinkpad T series?
Build quality is good on the ProBooks. Display options will not be as good as the EliteBooks. Fine for office use and CZcams.
@@Dovecomputers thanks for the quick response
it is possible to install here a WWAN modem (GSM)? I use now a EliteBook 1040 G3 with WWAN modem,
Hi! Thanks to your review I have purchased the 4500u variant. By the way have you experienced slow windows boot time when pressing Restart ( like about a minute long ) ? I just want to know if this is a common problem or not.
P/s: turns out there was a problem with the AMD Audio CoProcessor driver that cause slow ssd boot time. Uninstall and reinstall with a different driver version should help
Thanks. Normally it's a fast restart. More likely a program you have in the background slowing it down.
Mine takes 7.5s for shutdown (when restarting, not shutting down) and then about 16s for starting up (until desktop appears). It's not too bad but there are surely some other notebooks out there that are faster by 2-4 seconds, I would say.
The nicest review one could find anywhere. Subscribed to your channel !
I do have a few questions, I'd really appreciate your suggestion.
1) How do you think it would fare in comparison to Acer Swift 3 SF314-42 and Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14" in terms of performance?
2) Can you suggest me a decent laptop with 16Gb RAM, 500GB SSD for Data Science projects and Software & Web Development? Not much of a heavy graphics requirement. My budget is $800.
Thanks for your comments!
1) The Acer Swift 3 and Lenovo IdeaPad 5 has soldered on memory so no no in my books. However I think all 3 will be good performers.
2) Funny I was looking for something similar the other day....HP Envy x360 13.3" AMD 4500U @ $900 or AMD 4700U @ $1000. Bit more I know than your budget but really well made (Cheaper than Dell XPS 13 or HP Spectre) but just as premium. Going to try to get my hands on one for review.
@@Dovecomputers Thank you, I really appreciate your reply. But that's just too much for me if HP is an option that I choose for !
Taxation in India is insane, I'd probably have to pay 20% of the total price of the $800 in taxes which would be $80 more (in USD).
What if I chose Lenovo IdeaPad with a 16GB variant ? Wouldn't that suffice all my basic tasks ?
@@abc_cba If you can find a used laptop with MX150 with Quad Core i5, it will perform virtually identical to one of these at maybe half the price.
Would you recommend going with G7 for $400 or G8 for $450 in 2023? 4500u vs 5500u
Hi. May I know how to on keyboard light?
Is it good for adobe editing software?
I bought this model of hp laptop. I downloaded google chrome but only blank screen appears. How do i do that?
Nice review. I just brought HP Probook 455 G7 with ryzen 7 4700u, 8gb ram, 250nit IPS display, 512gb SSD and backlit keyboard for 612 USD. What I really like about the model is that it is upgradable compared to Lenovo Ideapad 5 and Acer Swift 3. I am planning to upgrade to 16 gb dual channel ,but unfortunately I am unable to find 8gb 3200mhz so-dimm ram in my country. I searched everywhere should I wait a couple of months and see if they restock or is it better to go with lower frequency. Also does the laptop support 32gb ram.
Thanks, with the global shortage of computer parts due to the pandemic it is very difficult to find upgrade items. Love the ProBooks for the upgrade options available. Lenovo and Dell moving away from this.
Hello. Have you updated the BIOS? If so, does the webcam still works? I've encountered many threads about this issue.
Which one is better this or hp elitebook 840 G6
Have you gotten your hands on the Ryzen 5 model? Also, is the trackpad using synaptic or precision drivers?
Edit: thought I'd mention here in case anyone is thinking of getting one: I got the Probook 450 G7 model, and while the drivers on HP's website are synaptic, I have mine installed with precision drivers.
Just got my hands today on the HP EliteBook 845 G7. The PB 445 uses Synaptics from what I remember. Unfortunately due to my workload, the PB 455 is looking more unlikely. Reviews to come, HP ZBook Studio G7, HP Envy x360 13, Dell Inspiron 13 7000 2 in 1 (11th Gen) and Dell Inspiron 15 5000. (11th Gen) 👍
@@Dovecomputers good to know. The Ryzen 7 model are out of stock in my area so I'm going to be picking up the Ryzen 5 model soon. From your experience from other laptops, is there going to be any major difference in thermals and performance?
Have fun with your upcoming reviews!
@@silverhusky7993 Ryzen 7 APU's are in short supply. Used a few Ryzen 5 4500U laptops, had no problems with thermals or performance. The Ryzen 5 and 7 are very strong in performance. Had a ProBook 455 G7 with 4500U for several months, really good performance and cool most of the time. The display is the only thing that lets them down (Same with Lenovo ThinkPad E15) otherwise, you can pickup a HP PB 455 G7 Ryzen 4500U, 16GB/512GB £599 + VAT, Bargain! 👍
Can you remember how loud the fan was? Most of the ultrabooks today have rather loud fans because of the slim build which is very disturbing to me, so I was hoping that the HP 445 g7 would be more efficient in cooling with this extra fan on the side. Am I assuming right?
The ProBook fans were not loud when under heavy load. Not noticeable when we were running benchmarks on it. 👍
@@Dovecomputers thank you! :)
Do you have a harddisk in your laptop ?
Would you recommend lenovo IdeaPad 5 14? Even over this maybe? IdeaPad 5 has 300 nit display with 45% NTSC but only 8gb soldered ram. I'll be using it for programming and watching videos. Thank you
The Lenovo IdeaPad 5 14 is a great laptop with a slightly brighter display panel. I would stretch to 16GB RAM if you can as its soldered on RAM. 👍
@@Dovecomputers I will try to find it with 16gb ram but as of now only 8gb ram is available. ThinkPad e14 gen 2 has expandable ram though, should j consider it over IdeaPad 5?
As for your alternatives, I'm looking into getting a 14 incher preferably but the main reason I'm looking at this 445 G7 is because it's one of few that has that extra 2.5 SSD slot. I have an older 1TB SSD that I want to put into the new laptop for extra storage. Very few 14 inch models have this sadly. Do you know off hand which ones are good on this front? I'm mainly looking for Ryzen 4500u but even the 4700u is an option.
I'm not sure there are any others out there that offer both nvme and SATA3 slots. The 445 G7 looks like a great overall package. Reasonable compromise between portability and good performance/cooling (twin heat pipes). There are other implementations of the 4700U out there, but will be performance-limited because of the limited cooling (single heat-pipe, small form factor and fans).
The Lenovo ThinkPad E495 is the closest to the ProBook 445 internally, but of course uses the older AMD Ryzen 3000 mobile CPU's. The successor to the E495, the E14 (Intel) has a 2.5" SATA bay but only one DIMM slot. Interestingly the upcoming ThinkPad E14 Gen 2 with AMD CPUs will support dual channel RAM (One soldered, one DIMM slot) and get rid of the 2.5" bay for a second additional M2. slot. Like AJ W said, the 445 G7 is a refreshing, but dying breed.
@@Dovecomputers Thanks for the reply mate, appreciate the info!
@@SirAndras I would go for the 4500U, because even 6 cores is a heck of a lot of CPU power that most people don't need in a laptop. Heck I would get a 4300U version if the price was significantly better. Less heat and fan noise too.
I am hesitating between Ryzen 4500u and Intel i5 10210u. All tests and benchmarks saying that Ryzen is better, but still pre AMD history of unreliable GPUs..
Hi sir, will this laptop be good for music production? thanks (I wanna be sure the processor won't overload)
Probably would go with AMD 5000 series CPU as min. (445 G8) Also need 16GB min. 32Gb RAM recommended and a fast M.2 SSD drive.
Why not at least 300nits? OEM's assume all business laptop users would work from dimly lit office space. With the arrival of Covid-19, I tried working in my open balcony and in sunlight, my 250nits Lenovo business laptop seemed inadequate. Screen brightness and a good in built webcam have never been so important.
Couldn't agree more. Screen brightness and good quality webcams should be the norm now. This is why I advocate more customisation in the order process to give this choice. Seeing it in fragments like HP USA and Lenovo.
What a nice review.I'm going to university next month. This probook is in my wishlist because i prefer amd ryzen 4000 series to intel 10th gen cpu. However i'm looking for a 100% srgb display laptop. Should i keep waiting for it?
Thanks. Look at the HP EliteBook 845 G7 coming out soon with AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 4650U or Ryzen 7 Pro 4750U with the 400 nits 72% NTSC display panel. Currently testing this same panel on the HP ZBook Firefly 15, *Spoiler, excellent screen. Waiting to get our hands on the EliteBook 845/855 G7 in the next week or so for a review. 👍
@@Dovecomputers Omg! That is good news. I hope that you will make a video about these incoming elitebook. You're a good reviewer

thank you
No, you need a dedicated GPU for that.
Finally! I’ll probably get the 15.6” 1000 nit version
Definitely, the brightness level on the 445 G7 (250 nits) is not good.
You can custom order the 1000 nit sureview option on this one. About a 4 week wait.
How is it?
@@Dovecomputers any recommendations in the same price range 14'' laptops with higher brightness preferably IPS mat? Looking for same specs Ryzen 4500u, 16gb ddr4.
Hello. I've read some threads in the HP Community. I've seen some threads with 445 and the 455 G7 that after they updated the BIOS, Webcam stops working. Most of them ended up having their camera module replaced by the HP repair service. Have you encountered this? Do you really need to update BIOS?
Hi, not that we know of. We've updated a few 455's with no issues.
What's the point of the Type C option in AC Adapter if you'll still have the usual power input in your laptop? won't it be better to just the the non type c AC Adapter?
Also, should I get the Ryzen 3 4300u over the ryzen 5?
4300U is a les powerful CPU. I would not consider it. 4500u is the sweetspot if you ask me.
The reason for the Type C AC option is, that if you for instance only want to carry around one charger for your phone and your notebook you can do it. In the end, there is no disadvantage to have it and if you do need it some time in the future, that is fine too. Additional to that: It is a standard port... so even if your normal charger is dying for whatever reason you still could power it with a USB-C charger instead of buying a more or less properitery one from HP.
@@ContinuumGaming ah alright.
For the type C charger, I still don't quite understand. So the laptop will come with the standard charger plus the option I choose?
Just ordered mine , i hope it will work well...
did it?
Has it happened to some of you that you suddenly press the volume up button? the f7 button or the lower brightness button, it very rarely happens to me, but I would like to know if it is normal in this model, I don't know if it is some software or driver

Yes, would be a good combination.
CPU: Can the Ryzen 4000 Series CPU be removed/replaced in 445 and 455 G7 models?
Not sure as you would need to take the heatsink off it to check whether it is on a socket or soldered on. My guess is soldered on, so no is the answer.
Any idea what the purpose is for those black flappy things covering the SODIMM slots and other parts of the motherboard? Do they conduct heat as in a flexible heat spreader-like material? Wondering if I should just rip it off in my unit.
EMI and Heat speader. You want to keep it on.

There is an option for 1000 nit display for 197 dollars.
@@rooooooby how to distinguish 1000nit version?
This seemed like a good value to me, until I went on HPs Website to configure one. The $175 to upgrade to the 1000nit privacy screen was a good enough deal, but nearly $300 for an 256gb NVME upgrade, when I can get a top shelf one for $55? Same goes for memory, $200 for a single 16gb DIMM. Which you would have to marry to something to get dual channel performance. With a bit of DIY I can still come in under $1000, and have it comparable to a Lenovo X1 Carbon for $300 more. Plus HP only wants $100 for a three year onsite warranty and their service policies are outstanding. But even with all the money in the world, I would never pay 5 or 6 times market for upgrades. That makes this too DIY and will be a pass.
Yes I agree. Mine came in a few days ago. I was prepared to do DIY. I went bare-bones with no OS, 500 GB HDD, and the minimum 4 GB RAM. I went after-market and installed an XPG SX8200 PRO 1 TB nvme, 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) HyperX Corsair, and the 1000 nit Sure View. It was a bit of trouble at first, but now I've got my system running nicely now without a lot of HP bloat. But for sure, you need to go hands-on to realize the savings.
@@ajw9975 where did you find the 1000 nits Panel?
@@HuyNguyen-cs8tk I had HP configure my unit with the 1000 nit panel. It's bright, but as other reviewers have noted, it only comes to about 650 nits measured. Unless you do a lot of work in bright/sunny environments (and don't do a whole lot of photo editing), a lower spec display would be fine I feel. The Sure View is definitely nice and it does work to limit others from peeping. But I feel the primary user (yourself) would need to be within a 30-degree cone of the display to not be bothered by the privacy functions.
AJ W Any particular reason you specified “And don’t do a whole lot of photo editing”? The brightness and color accuracy on the 1000 nit panel look perfect for editing on paper atleast. Aiming for either this laptop using the DIY upgrade approach or a hp envy 15inch Ryzen 5 16gb ram.

I have the exact same model. If you are going to looking at the screen for a long period of time this is not the one for you. Screen is not that great.
Only downside with most of the ProBook range, the display is normally 250 nits. The new Probook G9 has an optional model with 400 nits 1080P.

Patience! When you upload 4K60 video, CZcams takes time to process all the higher resolutions after its published. 👍
