Many many years ago I was heading to the mountains on an archery elk hunt. I had forgotten my sheath knife and needed a quick replacement. I stopped at a hardware store and on a whim decided I could get by with a hunting size folder so I bought the large case Sodbuster
As luck would have it I killed an elk with my recurve bow on that trip and the Sodbuster did the job quartering and skinning. I really haven’t been hunting without it since. It’s done lots of deer antelope and elk! 👍

I've watched quite a few Case Sod Buster Jr reviews on CZcams and there are a couple things nobody seems to mention. One, how light they are. The thin handled ones only weigh 1.9 oz. That's very light for a knife of this size and capability. Obviously, the light weight is mostly due to having only one blade. But also because they don't have nickel silver bolsters on the ends adding weight, and because the blade is so light. Two, the blade grind is hollow ground. This makes it a terrific slicer and contributes to the light weight since when they grind the steel it removes a lot of weight from each side. And the blade stock is pretty thin to begin with. Another advantage of a hollow grind is that the thinness of the blade continues upward into the blade further than any other grind. This means that as you sharpen the knife over time, it remains relatively easy to get a fine edge because the blade remains so thin.

Exactly. No back bevel to speak of. Just maintain your edge and the rest will take care of itself

  • @strongandco

Sod busters also maximise the cover real estate so if you have beautiful jigged bone covers like those case knives you generally get more more of it on a sod buster. I happen to like a bit of contrast with a bolster though and that Shrade Old Timer gives you the best of both worlds. I'm loving the rich golden brown tones on that saw cut bone. That's a huge jump in quality over recent Old Timer ranges.

I was very unsure about this style of knife initially, so I purchased the version that is manufactured by Imperial before going whole hog into the Case brand, and I have to say, as happy as I am with my Case knives, theres something about being able to get versions of a simple knife thats designed well for 10 bucks. If you just need a knife, its hard to go wrong with this pattern. It just works. I also agree when it comes to ergonomics too. Theres a comfort in the simplicity of these designs.

Best blade style on case and I always prefer single bladed knives. I’m also a fan of the vanilla puddin’ Delryn version, and they’ve been doing that over a hundred years.

Roper makes an awesome locking style sod buster made with genuine white bone handle. If you only buy US made then you won't like it. It's great quality for $20 shipped and has a carbon steel blade, buy from Chicago knives. To be honest I've gotten some seriously lacking Case stockman's and trappers with bad quality control. So for me just because it says made in US does not mean great quality for the money.

@@frankcastle4213 I purchased the Roper Tumbleweed knife you mentioned and it's great. Although after some time I realized that I prefer stainless because my carbon blade looks like a mess now. I can fix it up no problem, but I don't enjoy maintaining anything beyond what is absolutely necessary. So from now on I'll probably stick with stainless blades. One of the things I love about my Swiss Army Knife is that I don't have to fuss with it at all and it stays perfect. The Roper knife is otherwise great in terms of aesthetic and utility. Thanks for the suggestion 👍

I’m a lifetime angler and 70 years old. Years ago CASE was the knife to own. Of course we all had our Buck Knives. Schrade was another favorite brand.
The blade design lends itself to many tasks including BUSHCRAFT tasks.
I’m no longer a fan of slip joints.
