I've come to understand that Magnus is the only person alive actually playing the game. Everyone else is memorizing board states and recalling to the best of their ability.
Edit: Obvious oversimplification. And yes - memorizing board states and theoretical lines is a skill.

I think of all the Super GM's Hikaru is doing that as well, of course not as good as Magnus, but Hikaru tries to play of prep a lot. Deviates a lot to play chess actually, because all of the new GM's are so well damn prepped, it's hard to play the real lines. So Magnus and Hikaru early deviates to actually play the position not something they memorized.

Have to say, even for a chess novice, it's obvious Carlsen is the best chess player alive. People keep posting videos about how good he is and trying to analyze his every move. "that was a master class, that was a brilliant move, Carlsen is changing chess".
It's like watching Michael Jordan tie his shoe and trying to figure out how his crossover got by you for the dunk. At that moment, why did he choose to dribble that way? In that moment of time there may have been hundreds of reasons collectively. Wait, he chose not to crossover, he went behind the back instead 1 second later. In that moment, there were a hundred different reasons why he chose that move because 1 second later everything had changed.
Chess is the same. One move changes everything. One move introduces new human cognitive incalculable outcomes but Carlsen's mind is capable of seeing farther into the future than anyone else alive and by no trivial amount. To make matters worse for challengers, his mind is capable of storing thousands of past chess games/moves so he not only can calculate the best move farther in the future he can remember more past moves than anyone playing.
These are skills you are born with or not. No amount of practice gives you this ability.

For an Englishman, your French is quite suave, if you care to hear. It sounds pretty suave to me.
Carlsen is not a man of repertoire if you think about it, at least not anymore. He is a man of board memes, something like that, in a distinct way. Very man to man, guy to guy, in your face. And unbeatable at it. Every once in a blue moon someone does it, and then that becomes pandemonium, obviously. He needs a wife. That may cure that endless chopping up of other guys. Nakamura is looking suave lately, for instance.

It is a mystery why English speakers are incapable of saying any word or name from another language correct..
You make video about Magnus Carlsen ....but are not able to pronounce his name correct. Hasn't he been long enough in the chess world in order for you to learn how to say his name correct....???? ....and...is it to difficult for you to use the few seconds it takes to check out correct pronunciation with google translate...???? Not that I need to learn how to say Magnus .....but it took me less than 10 sec to check it with google......
