- Magnus Carlsen Takes A Flamethrower To 'The Principles Of Chess' in this epic chess game against Pranav Anand, a young Indian chess prodigy. Magnus Carlsen played this chess game in the 2nd January 2024 chess.com Titled Tuesday Chess Tournament. Carlsen as usual playing a very weird chess opening and an epic chess battle then ensues. Truly stunning chess from Magnus Carlsen and a great fight from Anand.

Isn’t this called the ‘Creepy crawly’ ??
Thanks yeah I literally just remembered that after I recorded and was like oh wait creepy crawly, Michael Basman! This is quite a cool game: www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1026344
creepy crawly is for white, this is the st george
snake boat opening.
Goat horns
I am pretty sure the opening is know as"the scandinavian smile"
When one has mastered the rules, one can break them.
love it
Bravo!
Its more about getting the opponent out of what they know. Love this style of play.
"The Viking ship" I have to say this was more daring than usual from Magnus. The eval bar thought he was dead lost.
Ask yourself this question
"Could a super-GM (2700+) beat a normal person by random bad moves in the 5 first moves?"
YES.
But magnus is doing this TO super GM's Thats a level of good thats just completely insane.
Exaggerate much ? It’s Magnus he’s the best that’s the bottomline Funny openings and all Magnus knows what he’s doing it’s not surprising
you dont understand do you @@michaelmassaro4375
@@michaelmassaro4375it will always be surprising. Imagine if federer played tennis with one hand tied behind his back. That’s the equivalent
@@mrharryproductionsBut Federer just could with unrated players. Here the story is different.
@@prakash_clt Pranav anand is unrated?
I really admire Carlsen for getting out of every rational players comfort zone by playing these openings.
Because it’s Magnus, how about calling the opening: The Horns!
The goat horns!
The testicles
Oo I would say devil horns because it's cruel what he did. But goat is damn good
The play with the outside pawns should be called the Magnus. He is redefining chess openings and it's absolutely brilliant.
It's safe to say chess has never seen anything like Magnus. Just amazing.
Stockfish is his mentor. 😅
I think Magnus' plan is to sift out all the 'book-learners' who just memorise historical games and openings, and find an opponent who really understands the nuts and bolts of Chess like he does
Yeah these types of unorthodox strategies seem really good for those types of people. No one is prepared for this position and then he outplays them.
My 6yo daughter watched her first Epic Chess video ever! “That’s why they call it epic - this game is crazy!” 🤣❤️
haha that's cool, nice sleeping pill for her. 'This is boring' was probably uttered after about 30 seconds, that's what my 5 year old son says 😂
The lesson here is don’t learn to play chess by first learning opening. You must Master the game in reverse. First study the End Game, then the middle, then learn how those two things fallback into the opening.
I had a drama teacher at school who used to let us swear in our performances if it was authentic and appropriate, but he always said "Learn to use the language properly, then abuse it at your leisure".
Magnus is now abusing chess principles to gain an advantage because he has mastered the game.
Been saying it for years but after these last months I KNOW it is really true: Magnus is two parts chess genius, one part Internet troll, stirred and served with a chessboard.
And I would call it the 7-10 split opening...😂😂😂😂
What people are missing is that after a few silly moves, magnus can play stockfish like moves and equalize the game very quickly, then just simply dominate the end game.
The opponent also missed the move that would've crushed magnus. Had he played this against someone much stronger, I don't think he would've won
@@IN-pr3lw Thats my entire argument, even the strongest players will miss "the move" so he can always get away with silly openings. Wont work against a computer. Oh and even 2600, 2700s dont fight all the best moves esp in faster time formats.
@rajahzia So, is this thanks to his skill, or is it luck that his opponents miss key moments in games where they're so far ahead in Eval?
@@IN-pr3lw to put it simply, his moves closely match those of computer like kasapor and fisher, fisher is considered one of the most accurate players. Other gms of this generation can't match him.
I played St. George Defense all through high school. It catches people off guard so much.
Boomerang is the best!
I think I invented that opening when I was 7, and didn't have a clue how to play chess. If only I'd known then that I was thinking like a world champion...
Magnus understands those pawns better than any GM. They are tricky to everyone
Im sorry epic chess but how does anybody expect me to trouser my opponent with the e and d pawns?
With the zipper
Magnus' radical play has totally energized the chess world. He's breaking the often-boring theoretical rules and has shown how truly great he is.
The infamous “Dinner Plate” opening
everytime you say "make a baby girl' I LOVE IT- mans pioneering proper & respectful chess lingo 😤and yeah- Magnus simply CAN keep getting away with it- love the vids as always king makes me happy watchin your channel grow- DESERVED, just chessbrah & this bloke for me ❤️i watch levy in incognito sometimes too...... ;)
Thanks a lot!
We should name this opening "vampire fangs"
Magnus can do inferior openings for TWO particular reasons, of which we saw in this game. The first, is that his opponents will likely not be keen enough to spot the winning ideas in these never before seen positions, and will struggle to leverage their opening advantage. Second, he knows that he can outplay almost any opponent in the endgame, should he make it that far, and he almost always does.
Call it Carlsen's banana gambit.
I'm sure he want some kind of opening named after himself.
Your videos are great thank you. Like the speed of your games, not too slow or too fast and pausing at right moment
I think I know why Magnus is playing dubious openings. First, he is bored and wants to have fun. Second, he wants to take his opponent out of book lines.
Magnus is singlehandedly rewriting chess theory 😅
His opponent missed Knight E7. It doesn't matter what nonsense you play if your opponent doesn't capitalise.
@@darthkek1953 "It doesn't matter what nonsense you play if your opponent doesn't capitalise."
Sure, but ultimately, chess is all about pressuring your opponent into making mistakes, if no mistakes were made nobody would ever win a game of chess.
@@tonyb9735 the point is there was a refutation to his opening. This player didn't find it but there it is. If you don't refuse the Scholar's Mate, you get mated. But if you you can persecute them for trying it.
@@darthkek1953 It's not really necessary to refute the opening, it is bad, we know it, he knows it. The point is that it gets everyone out of their known opening books and even though Magnus is clearly worse for a while it gives much more opportunity for him to outplay them in an unknown position and create winning chances later.
@@darthkek1953 The point of playing "nonsense" is that it takes your opponent into territory where he's less likely to be able to capitalise. If you play standard theory for the first 20 moves, any top opponent will know the same theory and be able to play the best responses without having to think about it. Playing crazy stuff takes him into a position where finding the best moves requires thinking, which is particularly crucial in blitz when you have so little time to do it.
Long-assed banana opening seems to be the best description.
Magnus appears to be doing what Bobby Fischer should have done. Bobby eventually hated chess because of too much hashed-over analysis of standard openings and too little playing chess. Magnus is breaking things away from analysis and simply playing chess.
Exactly. But Bobby had too big an ego to sometimes lose if he would have played like this. Magnus loves chess too much to let this get in his way.
years ago when computers first came into chess there was an opening for black called the Hippopotamus which was considered a computer buster opening at that time, black's opening reminds me a little of the hippo
haha, Magnus starts with a banana, the SiliconOverlord keeps on shaking but Magnus knows, eliminate in the middle game because he has the endgame in his pocket like always. I really enjoyed this one, thanks Epic for your great commentary
the scythe opening
haha glad to hear thanks a lot
Magnus is master of the middle game, it shows on the time clock:
6:14 Magnus is minus ten seconds and should be in a lost position,
6:30 Magnus is up a half minute, still a losing position,
7:20 Magnus is up fifty seconds, at a disadvantage,
8:45 Magnus is up twenty-five seconds, position is even,
8:58 Magnus is up thirty-eight seconds, position is even, Anand has
I thought it was the “two handed salute”
Always happy to see a video from you man! This recent string of lateral openings by Magnus have been very enjoyable to watch.
Thanks a lot!
“Devil Horns” sounds more appropriate
at 5:00 mark, Magnus SHOULD HAVE lost. But his opponent didn't keep pressing that middle properly.
This is a classic Monobrow, also known as The Roman Arch, also known as the Cucumber Defense.
It’s called the Space Invader after the classic retro game
The 'Space Invader Drop'
IM Mike Basman produced a leaflet for juniors on this opening, and yes, he called it 'The Creepy Crawley'. Played as black with 1...h6, 2...a6, 3...c5 (3...e6) or similarly played as White with 1.h3, 2.a3, 3. c4 (3.e3). As a result of Basman's opening ideas I've seen juniors open 1.h3 b6
Oh cool thanks for sharing!
I don't think this rewrites the 'Principles' as Magnus plays openings that probably only he can salvage. It's like he intentionally handicaps himself so his opponents have to play from intuition instead of preparation. Bad news for them especially in rapid games.
I think he handicaps himself just to increase the challenge.
@@juliettelynne5861 Remember the time he showed up 2 1/2 minutes late for a 3 minute blitz game? And won anyway?
The air quality must have been compromised in Anand's room not to find the winning ideas
This recent series of Carlsen videos are niche and seriously entertaining. Sincere congratulations - there is not another chess commentator covering this ground, and certainly not in the way you are covering it. Maximus Decimus Meridius: "Are you not entertained?". The answer is "No" - i.e. we are, in fact, entertained.
Thanks a lot glad to hear and yeah I love making them too
I swear to god, you have the absolute best magnus photo library in the universe
Haha
Should call it the "Devils Horns"!!!
"The diss" as in disrespect
To be fair, Magnus is getting these crazy wins with some significant whiffs from his opponents.
That's got to hurt going to the game review after.
MAGNUS carlsen is doing what fischer couldn't do. Playing for fun. It takes a great deal of craziness to play like this. Except mikhail tal nobody has played bizzare chess. Magnus carlsen is going way over.even Kasparov at his prime was not this crazy to play like this. These short time control are helping him to play like this. Still the willingness to play like this is making Carlsen greatest of all time. Not afraid to loose.
I think it’s also called the creeply crawly opening
So good to see your subscribers growing steadily brother. Well deserved. The crab 😂. Magnus the magician- I’d be thinking about resigning when he’s just getting started….
Thanks a lot and glad you enjoyed!
The pawn chain is a cheeky grin from Magnus’ perspective!
haha I meant to mention that one then forgot
I absolutely love your magnus content and your commentary! Please keep doing what you're doing! That said maybe in future you can do some classic games as well? Such as morphy capablanca fischer tal, etc. Would love to see your take on those if you have time to do so. Whatever you do I'll stay subscribed and keep watching, cheers!
Thanks very much appreciate it glad you’re enjoying and yeah noted
names for the opening - long frown? long scowl?
It's the Venus Fly Trap.... tickle the middle and it snaps shut!
I feel like magnus has this one punch man demeanor
where he’s bored and trying ish.
I call it “The Canoe”
“The boat”
I think he pulls it off because he liquidates the pieces to the point that it eventually equals out.
It's the gaping maw defense.
Boomerang opening indeed
The Double Plow!!!
The "double wing?"
the magnus horns
We should call this one in the king one in the queen
we used to open like this in our childhood
please link your videos to an analysis board
The HAMMOCK
Bro you should be on commentators panel for chess games
Just amazing review 😂😂😂
Haha thanks a lot glad you enjoyed
@@epicchess2021 most welcome
Lately the commentators panel is very boring moreover the ladies on panel are downright abysmal and lack the passion towards game it’s more like a model or fashion show for them
The opening is called the AHC
The interesting thing about the opening is the pronunciation. Leave it open ended to have each person determine for themselves how to pronounce it.
the Bat'leth opening
Fischer is the happiest ghost right now!
The canoe opening.
This has nothing to do with chess principles and everything to do with fast thinking. Our excellent commentator shows black "absolutely dead lost" at 5:00. White's failure to exploit is just a result of time pressure, not some epical reconfiguration of opening theory.
12:05 "you make a baby girl" 😂
Maybe it's just me but I'm not actually excited about games where Magnus plays poorly in the opening and gets dominated and only draws or wins after that by sheer luck that his opponent missed the winning blow.
I'm more excited about Alpha Zero or Leela games where they teach us deep and strong things we haven't really seen in chess before.
"Hangloose" move!
"The Horns" lol
"You make a babygirl" XXXDDD
I think magnus is realizing that the opening and the middle game just doesn't matter, it's all about the end game. Magnus is simply better than anyone else when it comes to the end game. He can do silly openings, he can sack his pieces mid game because he knows that if he can get to the end game with roughly the same pieces as his opponent, he will beat them 99% of the time.
THE PARENTHESIS - we don’t see that singular noun often
The Longboat, for the Vikings this time
...what about taking with the knight on g6 instead of taking the knight on e7 with a bishop? That is a "check mate" - except that he takes the knight (w. the knight) and then the queen falls - right?
I forget the details sorry that move order might work tho
It‘s the Carlsen Claw ✌🏻
The conoe.
The Creepy Crawly should blates be called the "AH!" opening.
I don’t know why people think this is amazing play by Magnus. He’s the greatest chess player in the world, but he didn’t win this game, his opponent lost it. The Eval bar had his opponent in front by 7.5 at one point, and was regularly over 3 during the game.
The eval bar doesn’t swing from 7.5 in his opponents favour to being in Magnus’ favour because he’s played amazing moves, it’s because his opponent played bad moves.
Can you imagine caruana, nepo, hikaru not winning in that position?
why would he take the knight? It doesn't seem like a very magnus thing to do? ignoring it seems an option, there is a bishop behind it, if it moves and takes anything the queen take the bishop and defends the pawns? I havent looked very deep into it but b5 seems a fun response? Rook c8? Surely he has something silly planned here?
The A and H pawns are usually advanced a square in most games anyway, so Magnus just got that ritual completed early. He temporarily lost some initiative.
Call it pseudo-hypermodernism from Magnus: "even if I make dumb opening moves, my opponent's game is still in its last throes."
Stockfish legit played that opening against me last night, I was a little confused but I guess stockfish studied this game!😂
banger game, banger commentary.
Thanks a lot!
'A ' file and H file first 2 moves ? MUST be called the AH opening....or even the HA opening.
If the Pawn on one side is the "Saint George" pawns on both sides is "The Madness of King George".
Should call it the 'Ant Opening' for black and the 'Termite Opening' for white.
Call it "The soup bowl."
Bad opening and bad early game from Carlsen ends in a couple of missed plays and eventual capitulation from Pranav. Carlsen is just toying with these people and seeing if they crack
