Rooney saying Gerrard is mind blowing to me - simply because of the rivalry at that time, a history of Everton & United, both clubs who are not fond of Liverpool but he pushes that aside to remain objective. I hated Rooney as a player simply because of how scary he was as an opponent, being a Liverpool fan. I hope he does a good job in his managerial career.

The so called animosity between Liverpool and Everton doesn't come close to being what is between Liverpool and Utd. Familial banter is what occurs between Liverpool and Everton as you have so many families and friends split between the two. Liverpool and Utd is actual hatred, Mostly from the Mancs but a good deal of it from us as well. That should never preclude an opinion of who was a great footballer though.

Stevie G was an excellent player. His problem is that he was heavily favored by the English fan/journalist mob, a mob who submit coaches routinely in England, during a generation that could have won everything if coaches had given the teams to Paul Scholes. In the end, England served Gerard's reputation and it costed them hardware. Involved in that a deep-seated aspect of resentment that cannot be wished away. He will always be the prince, for better and for worse, because sometimes the hero-worship hurts the people.

I always hated how back in the day when he was young a fiesty he was often branded as this thick and ugly archetypal footballer because the way he read games and moved the ball showed very high intelligence that a lot of genetically gifted athletic players simply don't have. The golden generation once discussed why they had failed .. it’s their ego and the stupid rivalry between clubs that caused it . They have only themselves to blame . Man Utd players sitting one table , Liverpool players sitting another table , Chelsea players sitting another table . There was no togetherness . Glad Gareth changed all that .

Rooneys been on the scene for nearly two years. He’s scored goals wherever he’s gone. He’s the record goal scorer for the best club in the country’s history and for the national side, as well as the record outfield appearance holder. He’s won everything there is to win at club level, he’s scored in finals, he’s scored goals from the halfway line, from over his head to win derbies, pressure penalties. He’s done it all but and he SHOULD be in the bracket of “we were lucky to see him play”, he peaked early and United failure towards the end and Englands collective failure should take nothing away because he is the greatest player in England’s history

Rooney had bags of ability, that much is undeniable, it's why Ferguson showed so much patience. It's a shame he never reached the world class potential he clearly had. And I always found it surprising that Fergie put up with so many drops in Rooney's form, the fitness/weight problems, his attempts to force a move to Chelsea (twice), his holding the club to ransom for wage increases. I think about the hard line that he took with players who were arguably more talented than Rooney, or at the very least were more consistent, such as Stam, Van Nistelrooy, Keane, Beckham, plus other players who were dropped as soon as their form dipped. For that reason, it was obvious that Fergie's personal relationship with Wayne is what prevented the manager forcing him out, which is similar to how Fergie treated Cantona

Boy was Rooney king once and he bashed them in easy. Can't belive his playing career nearing its end. I had the tops with his name on it!
Being a united fan, Gerrard in the squad was key. Only if Scholes was in international we would have been so much stronger as an English side.
I struggle to get behind the new kids on the block but we better start appreciating them now coz before you know it they too would see the end of the line.

Always have a lot of respect for Rooney. Only annoying thing here is that he doesn't mention Poch. Pep understandably but Klopp hasn't done too much with English players bar maybe Gomez. Poch on the other hand has kicked off the high press in England. He's produced the spine of the England team (Walker, Rose, Dier, Alli, Kane, Trippier, Winks)
