Thanks for this debate. A great demonstration of how some earthly things are truly disputable, there is not a simple "Christian" answer. Both men made very good, thought-provoking points. Re the comments below that French says to "stand for Biden..." or that he will vote for the Democrat: French didn't state either; when pressed by Metaxas, he said that he will not vote for either Trump or Biden. The world will know we are Christians by our love, and I don't think someone reading the comments below would see evidence of that; I would love to see Christians lead the way in demonstrating how to disagree with respect, humility, and kindness.

I love your sentiment. I truly do and agree. Yet, my quibbling will be over the finer details. Christians do disagree with each other, and we should do a much better job in the "how" we do it, but I will submit to you that my idea of respect, humility and kindness includes moments of bluntness, self-discipline in anger, perhaps elevated volume ( the subject itself is a matter of varying opinions ). Discussion, conversation, debate, are not by definition or absolutely threatening, nor "of the Flesh", but it can surely go that route. Confession: Whenever I hear a very good call and reminder to show respect or kindness, I wonder by whose definition are we going by? A Conservative Christian definition? Progressive Christian? And therein lies the rub.

It is clear that Donald Trump's rhetoric has already had a significant corrosive effect on our discourse.
Multiple comments below accuse David French (who carries by far the *less* popular position) of being cowardly, of "fancying wearing women's undergarments" and being "limp wristed." French is a former marine, who takes this kind of abuse continually and with courage.
The left already engaged in this kind of gutter rhetoric for years, but it has become mainstream "conservative" evangelical discourse these last few years... and it's both wrong and sad.
We're supposed to be the party of ideas, conservatives. Let's have ideas, and then speak about them in a manner that adequately reflects the gravity of their importance.

I've just listened to this exchange (May 2022) in England. Firstly, the exchanges were all-over the place. For a debate of such importance, there should have been more structure to include a concentration on topics or themes. Secondly, I'm wondering whether David French feels somewhat embarrassed about Biden being caught out blatantly lying about not knowing about his son's 'business' connections with Ukraine and China, not to mention Biden's aggressive woke agenda since becoming President. Thirdly, French, unlike Metaxas, failed to understand that the political sphere operates under different constraints from the Christian, biblical sphere. The former is predicated on trade-offs, while engaging with the latter, as much as possible, involves eliminating moral and other trade-offs, while in the reality of practice, a Christian's life rarely escapes such trade-offs.
