Re:Zero constantly raises the bar for itself, incredible writing.
I was so shocked when I read this for the first time... Growing up in a very traditional Chinese family, kids are almost like a retirement plan, you have kids because it's "tradition." At a certain age, you just *have* to get married and have kids. Then, you raise your kids to be successful and earn money so they could take care of you like you took care of them, or in some cases take care of your legacy (family shop). Very logical and very Confucius, but that's why you'll also rarely find parents like Subaru's who just lets him do him.
They wanted to give birth to him and raise him because they wanted to give love to him, not because they wanted something in return...
For me it was so bizarre and infinitely heartwarming... If only more parents were like that...
@A's notes Assuming said expectations aren't too outlandish. Be careful how you word things, there is so many ways your comment could go.

That was quite a heavy episode but valuable in so many ways because we can deduce a lot from what this episode has revealed to us. We have finally gotten the big puzzle piece that is Subaruâs past and it tells us so much about why he acted the way he did up until now.
Many wondered why Subaru was so accepting of the fact that he was just transported to a new world at the beginning of S1. Subaru has lived most of his life in his fatherâs shadow. Kenichi is charismatic, talented and well respected all around, qualities that people more or less also expected from Subaru. This was true early into Subaruâs life and he constantly got positive feedback for that until the point came where he wavered in upholding that kind of image. Being Kenichiâs Son turned from a badge of honour for Subaru to a painful weight on his shoulder and he was crushed by the expectations of others all the while his self worth crumbled away. And now here is this completely new world where no one knows him let alone his father. Here he isnât Subaru Natsuki, son of Kenichi Natsuki. No one will put these high expectations on him. It was a new chance at life for Subaru, one he thought was tailored towards him and him alone. Sure he loved his parents dearly but the sheer pressure & negative feelings he held for the previous world and his position in it probably overwrote whatever lingering positive feelings he had for it left.
There are all kinds of neat little details about Subaruâs character in regards to his old life throughout Season 1 that just now got more depth.
Like his rather empty phone contacts which are most likely due to Subaru closing himself off entirely during High School ( S1 Ep 1 )
There is a particular scene in Season 1 that gets a whole lot more depth & context with this episode. The fabled ( S1 Ep 13 ) where Subaru proclaims himself Emiliaâs knight and clashes with Julius. A centre theme in that entire exchange is being worthy of a title. Subaru proclaims himself a knight which leads to Julius questioning him on his worth for that very title. And when Julius implies that Emilia isnât showing she is proud to have Subaru as a knight things start to fall apart. See the resemblance to Subaru and his title as Kenichiâs Son? To drive that point in even further let me quote Subaruâs next words "Is being a knight that big of a deal? You just happened to be born into the job! Donât act like a big shot with your daddyâs name!" followed by a very clear visual indicator that Subaru is pained by these words cause as we now know it was projection all along.
Another example is the second arc when Subaru starts working earnestly at the mansion and we learn that he is very happy with earning his place through hard work to a point where he declines Emiliaâs offer to heal his wounds. Subaru was given a chance, not because he is Kenichiâs Son but because he is him and Subaru is giving it his all to be worthy of the expectations put onto him ( S1 Ep 4 )
All throughout Season 1 Subaru has the tendency to suddenly be all outgoing, goofy and hyper as if he just flipped a switch. This confused both viewers and the characters within the show. People eventually concluded that this was a coping mechanism for Subaru to deal with the things thrown at him but we still never really knew why he dealt with trauma in this way. This episode gives us the necessary info to finally get why Subaru behaves the way he does in such scenes. When Subaru started to fall behind from being the best and felt like he was in danger of not meeting everyoneâs expectations anymore he shifted his priorities to making everyone around him laugh, to be as charismatic as he could be. He put on an extremely noisy, hyper attitude in order to not only be the center of attention but also to feel like he was still the best at something. This is how Subaru got through the early stages of his childhood until the people surrounding him outgrew this kind of behaviour. It went from being funny to annoying so people started to move on. Subaru didnât try to change his ways but rather distance himself more & more. As a result Subaruâs experience in socializing with others became severely lopsided towards what he knew & worked in a portion of his lifeâŠputting on a clown show, making others laugh and be as loud and outgoing as possible. Now Subaru is here in a new world and desperate to make a good impression on others. Not only that but he is experiencing horrific things, ones he cannot talk about. So what does he do as a result? Fall back into the pattern he knows the best by putting on the overly happy jokester facade. At his core Subaru really isnât this noisy annoying brat, he just canât help behaving this way sometimes because itâs just imprinted on him from his past life. Luckily he has been bettering himself in that regard ever since From Zero happened in S1 Ep 18 where he openly laments this exact behaviour as one of the things he hates about himself. Seriously, listen to Subaruâs rant about himself again after this episode. Also since it keeps coming back up "I'm watching you, you're watching me, so I won't look down" finds itself even into this flashback episode.
There are countess more examples like these, more than I can realistically tackle here so I encourage people to at some point look back at some episodes and try to see the new light that is being shone on them.
I gotta say I loved and feared the scene when Subaru sits in his room and observes the clock as it advances towards the point of no return. Itâs painfully relatable to me ( not in the context of school ) but I had moments where I had to do something and I looked at the clock waiting for the moment where I could give myself an out by going "eh, itâs already too late for it anyway" and not blame myself further.
All of this is already very relatable and emotional but what broke me personally is when Subaru apologizes repeatedly and openly laments the facts that he will never be able to repay his parentâs love & support. His chances on returning to this world, especially anytime soon are very slim so Subaru has already resigned himself to the idea that he will never be able to see his parents again. He canât repay them for all they did by watching after them when theyâre old & in need of his support.
All in all a highly emotional and relatable episode which I hope lets some people finally warm up to Subaruâs character.
Your analysis is perfectly on point. It is why I love Subaru so much as for me the best MC in anime. Not because he is overpowered or cool (actually he is). He is the most grounded and relatable character I ever saw, for me seeing Subaru is disturbing because I struggled with depression and still do today. Seeing Subaru in episode 18 season 1 and here episode 4 season 2 made me shaken because it somehow mirror my own life. No joke, watching Subaru outdoing himself and becoming a better man inspires me a lot and I wish to be able to move forward in the future as he does, even without the ability of "Return by death"
Sigh people will drop the anime by this episode cause it doesnât have action anyway...

I can see why Subaru got so attached to the people living in the Roswaal Manor now because up until that point Subaru had no kind of real relationships with anyone not even his parents. This episode is Subaru letting out all the stuff he wanted to say to his parents getting closure in a sense and he was only able to do that due to Emilia and Rem who gave him the courage to not give up, something he desperately needed to hear back then.

This whole episode was a master piece. In a world where every character is from a bad family, an orphan, or has a family that isn't even relevant, Subaru has strong father and a loving mother that encouraged and love him. Subaru seemed more human than people in reality shows. This whole episode blew me away from start to finish.
The most powerful "itterashai" in anime. I teared up and got goosebumps watching this part again.
I'm going to be honest, Subaru is maybe my favorite main character in any anime. He manages to be both incredibly relatable while still feeling like his own character instead of falling into a trope. There are so many layers to him that it seems a lot of people don't recognize, and it makes me really happy that a lot more people are starting to understand.
That's why this episode is so great; it re-contextualizes a lot of Subaru's moments in the first season while also being heart-wrenching and heartwarming at the same time. The performances, writing, editing, and music are spot on here. I'm really excited, since from what I've heard it only goes up from here.
I honestly can't remember a single episode of any show that so expertly explores a character and shows what makes them tick like this one!
I was just surprised that it took until this point for Subaru to even THINK about his parents or his life back home. Like, he never even brought any of it up to himself or to anyone and we don't find out about any of his feelings towards even getting isekai'd until he's forced to live through this sequence. I thought that was the only weird part of this. The timing of it.
@@Croach193 Fair point. I think you could make a case about how Subaru's early personality left him pretty distant from his family. This might sound cheesy but as I grow up I want to do the things I love in life and be happy and if I can find a job like that or even If i Dont, thatâs fine I just want to pay my parents back for all the years theyâve cherished me and cared for me, them being immigrants from another country makes life harder for them then an average person and I want them to retire early , relax, and enjoy each otherâs company when me and my siblings canât visit them, and even though theyâll pass away I want them to know that Iâll cherish all the memories and fun times that were possible thanks to them, this got lengthier then i expected but if youâre still reading, then my message is basically, cherish ,remember, and thank those around you, be it family members, friends or even neighbors and coworkers, Subaru never got to actually see his parents but still accepted his regrets and moved on, as for you remember to keep those who make you happy in life in your heart no matter and yes I believe in echidna supremacy....
Bruh 1:28 had me bawling my eyes out for a solid ten minutes dude, love yâall parents man, every moment you have with them, because you never know when it may be the last time you see them
It messes me up inside when it apologizes to his father, cause he knows that he won't ever be able to fulfill his dad's request to take care of his parents when they are older. He knows that he can't ever undo what wrong he has done and the way he apologizes for it knowing that he already goofed and can never take it back hurts me.
AHHHH WHY DO I HAVE TO END UP CRYING OR TEARING UP SO EASILY!! I legit almost actually cried...
I hope that, even if subaru can't come back, he's at least able to let them know he's okay, or talk to them in some capacity
Yes; i had some tears also, big time!
This episode was very well written and projected a lot of real life probs.
And the fact that he broke down his pride and laid out all his b******* on the table he self analyzed himself and didn't shy away from it and then even when he was; he still called out his own B.s and was honest with his father father and mother and grew from this
Love his character development
This episode made me cry, shows don't do that often for me anymore. I feel like in many ways I have become numb through anxiety and my own mentality. Thank you to the person who created this story, and to everyone who put this episode together. It was in many ways exactly what I needed to see and hear. It allowed me to feel something and process things I haven't been able to for a long time.
this was a perfect anime episode. re:zero in my mind, is and always will be the best isekai to ever grace anime as a whole. it's realistic, it's grounded. subaru isn't some weird pervy overpowered main character, he's just a normal person. something i haven't personally seen isekais really deal with is how the main character feels about their past life. i haven't seen any character tackle homesickness, or missing their family they left behind.
I feel so sorry for Subaru and his parents, because in their perspective he suddenly just vanished without even properly saying goodbye or something.
Glad to see how Subaru overcomes his regrets this episode
Although rare- I do love when anime protagonists/characters have two living parents who love and care for them- most of the time protagonists will always have dead or one dead one abusive parent to make their backstory âedgyâ but seeing a healthy family in a fictional story is just so beautiful đ„č another reason as to why Re:Zero is top tier â€
best mother and father of 2020, this made me cry, and i haven't cried to a anime for 4 years since Angel Beats ;-;
man that last episode of angel beats hit harder than i originally expected
spiritaam ikr? I really wanted season 2 for it ;-;
It's criminal that this has little views compared to other clips
This arguably one of the best scenes in Re: Zero
Yes!!
"If you don't cry, you'll never be able to really smile." - Negi Springfield
It doesn't matter how many times I watch this scene, it always makes me cry badly. It just hits me hard. I love it.

I really hope sometime in the future suburu gets reunited with his parents
NormalKecleon We got Echidna in a school girl uniform, anything is possible
That's the ending that I'll like to see. But, it will be also sad because he will have to say goodbye to everyone in the isekai world.
I hope the author is just throwing curve balls
The Author already confirmed that Subaru is Never returning to his old world
@@Oboreru493 Well that sucked
Subaru is my new favorite anime protag now tbh, why? cause he's a realistic human being.
hell him thanking Echidna for being able to at least say goodbye to his parents makes this even better
Every single time I watch this I cry.
Thinking heâll never see his parents again makes me sad. Damn.
Still the best Re:Zero episode to date.
This season 2 episode 11 season 2 episode 15 season 2 episode 19 and season 2 episode 24 are all tied to me
Best parents right there
Echinda was a horrible person but she allowed him this closure so Iâm thankful
I HEAR NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS 29 is a number meaning new beginnings, change, and growth. and this is the 29th episode and its 29 minutes and 29 seconds long.
TFW
A direct translation of "Itterasshai" is not "take care" but its "please go and comeback" and Subaru never came back :(
Yeah,sad :(
He also didn't say "ittekimasu", this is so sad :(
âTake careâ
2 words
Thousands of crying noises in the distance(one of those was me)
This has to be the best ep of Re:Zero,up there with ep15,18,25,26
E8
this was still sad but it was nothing compared to rdr2 thats the way it is
Episode 23?
@@DragonNinja_2003 season 2 episode 4
Cried twice during this episode. That was just beautiful.
And oh boy, we better get that OST as quickly as possible.
Subaru since the first season is my favorite character, I put myself in his place and I understand it, it hurt me to see that the last time his parents saw him was when he went out to 24/7 and never came back
When the father tells her that in the future in the form of gratitude only take care of them in their old age and subrau begins to cry since he feels that his life is on the other side with emilia and the others, so he knows that he will never see them again and begins to apologize anyway is sad, but when he talks to the mother the conversation is light but carries such a strong emotional weight that every word hurts, in the end he was able to solve his doubts and problems that had to do clearly with his parents, he was able to make the passes with himself and with them in silence. .......I cried with both scenes u.u
The feeling of loneliness is so well portrayed in this anime but has those sweet moments of Subaruâs past that brings tears to my eyes. This is by far one of the best shows Iâve watched.
Well 0:13
Make me want to cry
Itâs like we all like subaru we didnât do anything for our parents
So when she said we had you because we wanted to do something for you
I told my dad I cried at this episode and I explained the plot to him. He fake cried and said " So your going to disappear and leave me too!??" Lol
That sounds like something Subaru's dad would say.
thats a good dad, good for you.
Love your dad. As I'm sure he loves you with all of his heart and soul. And cherish what you have. đ
This episode made me cry so damn much, but at the same time I don't regret any of those tears. Even if they weren't the actual real life parents, to me, Subaru felt as if he actually was saying farewell to his mother
The voice of Subaru sound like he really crying for real. It so powerful the love from your parent.
This is one of them isekais where his past world heavily impacts him
Tell your parents you love them. Because you never know when your gonna get isekaied
be aware of truck-kun
@@ric_reborn I actually almost got hitted by a crazy car the other day, i was just a few meters away and an auto passed while beign chased by the police, some crazy stuff there
That and wear your favorite tracksuit every time you leave the house.
@@ric_reborn unfortunately Normal Truck is a much more realistic threat. No afterlife. No cool fantasy world. Just returned to the endless abyss. Or, if you're lucky, you wake up to your horribly mangled body. Good times!
This episode made Subaru my favorite anime character
Jiayu Hao heâs already my favorite character back in season 1
Shoutout to all the loving anime parents that will never know the whereabouts of their children that were either isekaied (without death) or went on a secret journey to save the world and died during it.
Though they cut a lot of amazing phrases from the LN this make you cry like a child with this episode.
well there's a need for cuts, the cuts only start to become a problem when they cut something that it's hard to put later(maybe a flashback, it's not uncommon)
@NormalKecleon just to make sure, you read the Ln, not the Web novel, right? I didn't read them but I know that the Ln changed some things.
Not really much of choice. They got cut something. Gotta be grateful that most of these episodes are 27 minutes long in industry where 18-20 min episodes are the norm. They are clearly adapting as much as they can.
"Take Care"
two words can make me cry
She has the hairstyle...
I thought she was going to get hit by a train because of that hair.
@@VinnyLam Not going to lie, thought the same thing. I was waiting for it to get dark.
who are we talking about?
@@lisapainfulthe7438 facts idk either
@@lisapainfulthe7438 Almost all anime moms who have that hairstyle get brutally murdered or something similar at some point. A popular example is Attack on titan.
Subaru rocking that Phoenix Wright outfit
One of the only isekai anime that don't Forget the character actually had a life before being isekai
"We didn't have you because we wanted you to do something for us, we had you because we wanted to do something for you"
So beautiful and powerful quote â€
And just like that I'm crying đą
The most impressive thing (outside of the emotional roller coaster) in this episode, is the way Subaru's anxiety is portrayed. The feeling that you wanted to give up on going to school, but there's this heavy thing inside your chest that you just can't let it out and it builds up more and more each day you don't go to school. Sometimes you suddenly thought maybe today's the day I probably should go back to school, but you look at the clock and give yourself an excuse of "it's past the time, maybe tomorrow I'll try again?". Sometimes you think "it's been a week/month already, probably no one noticed/cared about me missing class, I wonder if they're preparing for the exam?". The worst of it all is that when people trying to help you it makes your chest feel way heavier because you think you already gave up and it's not worth their time.
This hits even harder when you learn about Subaru's Voice Actor's own relationship with his parents.
what's up with it?
@@cherrypie4711 Basically he felt like he disspapointed them by going into voice acting instead of a normal career and i believe his dad died before he ever became successful, so he died thinking his son was a failure
@@calistusjay60 oh my god... it's so painful to hear. i just can't imagine how Yusuke-san feels
The reason why Subaru made Mayonnaise in the new world is because is something he ate with his parents everyday, in a sense, he truly couldn't live without it. It's his last connection to them.
This episode was sooo perfectly adapted that it even hit me more hard than the Light novel version(cried reading all the chapter) literally made me clear why i love Re zero, and Subaru a lot
I just couldn't stop my tears at this...
When you realise that Subaru just wanted some groceries and to stay with his loving family
Not really. He was ecstatic to get summoned. He thought his parents would be better off without him and so didnât care
No he loved having the opportunity to escape from the shadow of expectations in the real world.
But that initial excitement changed when a new world wouldn't change who he is. He would have to grow and change, to start from zero.
And in this episode we found out that Subaru didn't quite realize how much he truly cherished his parents, and how much they cherished him.
Exactly , even ppl was wondering why subaru wasnt questioning about getting summoned & being happy in another world
@@tomburgess8485 It's easy to think that when you're depressed. You start to imagine that everyone else would be better off with you gone. I guess he forgot that's not how a loving family works
