This was a singing competition originally only for Chinese singers. Dimash was invited to compete as the first foreigner and the youngest in the show's history. He was only 22 and the others were 12-39 years older. He is from Kazakhstan and only spoke Kazakh and Russian then. His first three songs were in French (SOS), Russian, English, and Mandarin. He became an overnight sensation after singing this song...which has become his signature. I wish you had chosen the video with cc for English translations. The other singers knew nothing about Dimash other than he was a foreigner competing. They were shocked at his talent and remarked on how handsome he was. They all took him under their wings and looked out for him. One of the other singers even bought an expensive medication for him when he became ill before his performance. My algorithms brought your video to me for 2 reasons: I had subscribed to you yesterday maybe to some nostalgic music as I love ethnic reactors to the music of old and then I am a “Dear” which means I am a fan of Dimash. I was your 2nd view. When I saw you yesterday I thought to myself he would love Dimash, but was afraid you wouldn’t listen to me. And then today there you are. Dimash was 22 here and all the combatants were professional musicians including him it’s just he wasn’t known till this song. He is Asian but wasn’t Chinese so he couldn’t win the show. At this time he was in his doctorate having completed two masters. So he would have done all the production and performance arts. With all those tricks he was doing with his voice like Michael Jackson one of his idols he would have instructed the soundboard and designer what to do with his voice at every onset and outgo or whatever the words are. Lights everything. Having by this time played 8 instruments being trained in classical and contemporary he could write his music for those instruments by note or ear having an opera singing mother and a producer father where he would have seen music written both was and he has perfect pitch to sing a note he wants from a musician. Dimash started his journey in the performance arts in the performance arts at the age of 2 yrs having a part in a production as a toddler at 5 yrs old he won his first piano competition, performed on stage perfessiinalky and his grandmother entered him in the university at the music academy. Dimash is 29 yrs now and last week performed with Pavarotti. Dimash in his young years performed and won many singing competitions. Now he goes back to sing and now judges those competitions. He is a high fashion model choosing his jobs and at Dubai at the EMI fasting celebration he won Best Dressed Male that year and gave his trophy to his grandmother who walked him to school. Also as the eldest child as is custom in Khazakastan he was raised by his grandparents. If you go to Dimashs channel anything done by him is a delight and a surprise as he has a vocal range beyond 7 octaves that we know of and is accomplished at most genres and creates his own too. @@theneverenderreacts one thing you will learn quickly is that people will tell you different versions are "the best" for different reasons. One of the MANY fun things about Dimash is that he can perform the same song twenty different ways and each time it will just hit someone a certain way for some reason and become their favorite version. Same guy, same skillset, different heart connections. It's really cool, actually! What I find is that I can almost always find a favorite thing in each version. I am partial to Slavic Bazaar because I think he had really perfected the performance and it was very natural. But I LOVE this version too because it was his debut to the world stage, and there are so many details surrounding this performance that make it magical, things that none of the other performances of "S.O.S." have. Then there's the heartbreaking tribute performance for his friend Denis Ten, a Kazakh figure skater who had preformed to this song several times prior to his tragic death that holds an entirely different feel. You will never get the same performance twice from Dimash.
I feel like his Digital Show SOS was more natural. Slavic version is very good but its a classy stage show, while the DS one has much more emotion matching the song and showcases the 'depression' in the lyrics a lot more.
