As a retired truck driver the best advice I can give is invest in a mini fridge, an electric stovetop, a nice TV/computer, a small grill for summer, adblocker for listening to things on youtube, A dehydrator for fruits and meats. Use truck stops for showers, laundry, and socializing. But don't give in and buy their over priced stuff. Plan your comfort accordingly. It's key for the long haul. Drive safe. Love from Wisconsin!

I work for a private trucking school and it amazes me how naïve people are to to what it takes to do this job. Far to many have the attitude that "its just driving a truck" . This job requires skill, attention to detail, and a self starter attitude. You also need the ability to stay focused and in the game on long weeks and drives. The best advice I can give people is no matter who you work for or who owns the truck you got to run that truck like you own it. How you feel about the company or owner means very little. That truck pays your bills and if its not running your not making money. Pretrip it like its yours, Learn the operating costs, keep track of the expenses (fuel, maintenance, repairs, and if you can payment and insurance). All this will help you keep making money and make good decision when and if you decide to get your own truck.

It will also be alot easier getting your foot in doors. You can work, stack your money and on your time off figure out what you want to do in the future. 4, to 10 years from now. I have no job, no connections, and ive wasted 4 years trying to "figure out" what to do. Better to work and get paid while doing so.

They pay you to go to school, not a whole lot but it’s putting some money in your pocket while you’re in school. And they feed students two meals a day, they pay for your room and board while learning there, they have three or more schools they’ll send you to the one you’re closest to.

That was my thinking, I was hale bent on paying for my own school didn’t want to be owned - like you’re saying.
Getting pre-prepared for this, studying kept hearing over and over how others (some were so annoyed) with Schneider being extremely overly focused on safety when they School new & orientate experienced -their drivers. I called their recruiting number it sounds pretty darn good.
Then my thinking was they can own me if they want to. They only want the students to work nine months (don’t have notes approxs, it’s not very long, some companies want you to work for 2 years) to pay back for the schooling. And I’m honestly not so worried about getting ripped off for 7 or $8000, I can earn it back later. Just so long as I get trained properly safest possible school where as other companies are just wanting to get you out there driving asap so They can make Their Money and aren’t really fully teaching. And I heard warnings of the schools doing the same, just want to get students in n out n get pay $ to keep CDL schools in business.
It’s taking me a while to get a lot of things done so I can stay focused when I do start doing it, it’s probably gonna be after the first of the year. I’m not rushing into it although I am very excited to get started.
Lmk if you want me to give some feedback even though it’s gonna be a while.

I am a school bus driver and thinking about upgrading my driving job to truck driving, I’m a introvert, love my independence, the only thing that sucks is I have my only family, so I don’t want to miss time with my kids, i always wanted to be a truck driver since I was a kid, I know it’s weird haha 😆 it’s my dream job. Maybe when my kids get older I can try this out.

Before even watching this I want to say something. I earned my CDL and everyone told me about how many jobs there are out there. Here's my experience. 90% of companies won't hire unless you have 6 months to 1 year experience. Most of this is because of their insurance. Now with freight costs rising, competition for jobs is rising. 4 months and I'm still looking. Dealing with recruiters and looking into large national companies that have training has been the only way anyone will talk to me. What's available to those without experience....road time 3 weeks, home time 3 days .55 to .60 per mile. I have conditional offer from Schneider Trucking but it's not secured yet. Oh, and another thing my trucking school didn't mention...the need for hazmat, twik cards, doubles, triples. Give over your bodily fluids, hair for drug tests, 10 years of continuous employment history, background check... it's pretty invasive. I get it, safety n all but sheesh. All that for 50-60k per year to start.... it's been somewhat frustrating.

Ariel Smith, this is the perfect job for introverts you get to work pretty much all to yourself. You can’t live your life worrying about what others think.
Any male dominated whatever is never going to like women and the world will always have certain personalities who just don’t like women anyway, most of us (me included) whether we are male or female were raised by a mother and it just isn’t done perfectly and the subconscious and psyche is formed around how we were all mothered.
There are numerous channels on CZcams of young women already doing this and even starting their own companies. I’m sure you’ve already checked them out or you hopefully should and now will..
Lots of people getting into this when they’re older, including men, I see in these ppl on CZcams channels are saying if only I had done this when I was younger, They are making good money and they love it.
      Go for it Ariel !
Otherwise, when you’ve gotten a little more out of your shell and you’re older you’d be saying I should’ve done that when I was younger but I was shy and cared what others were thinking. Trust me you live long enough you have a hard enough life you don’t have the luxury of being shy or worrying about what people think. Please go for it.
Call the phone number for Schneider Recruiting, that’s the route I’m taking. I put it in the comments of above.
      Wishing you well.

1:24 the beginning was the best advice anyone can give! Thanks! Luckily for me and most of our younger BROKE generation. We don’t have that issue. For most of us it’s getting that tuition.

I'm a 47 year old widow with grown children that have nothing left, not even a home. Waiting for my back ground check which I am a convicted felon that Covenant knows about for school schedule in Paducah. So far I'm not fond of the recruiter due to lack of knowledge or reluctant to answer my questions.

I'm coming up on 20 now, and I've just started to do the things required to become a Truck Driver. I've just passed my airbrakes course and I looked around in my classroom, I was the youngest guy there. Next youngest guy was in his mid 20s and had no intention of driving trucks. When you're in a room with 12 40+ year old guys, and you hear "Canada has an 18,000 person trucking shortage" it doesn't really feel like this career is getting enough new drivers.
I *hope* that when I take my Class 1 program in February, I can do good enough, I can do the job. And hell, maybe I won't become an off highway Log truck driver like I want to. I'm definitely getting into trucking either way. EATON 18 SPEED, HERE I COME!

I drove a truck from 2006 to 2012. Never renewed my medical card so they pulled my cdl . Didn’t know I had to take tests all over again to get it back. I been thinking about getting it back but I don’t think I can stand riding with a trainer again for 4 weeks lol. I was a log hauler and have pulled loads that would make the average company driver have a panic attack. Riding with some dude with 1 year experience sounds like a nightmare
