  • Meet my pet shrimp! I have a few varieties of dwarf freshwater shrimp also known as Neocaridina. I have 4 color varieties so far: Pumpkin Orange, red, blue, and pearl white. I am still learning how to better identify the specific color varieties of shrimp. I keep one group in a 5 gallon rimless planted tank and the rest in two planted 20 gallon tall community tanks. Do you like my shrimp tank?

I love the fantasy blue ones best. After losing two batches of regular cherries to bad molts, I finally have a stable colony and I agree it’s super fascinating to watch them go about their lives. The hobby is super fun and the shrimp are super low maintenance once things stabilize and you have a routine going.

For those curious, the competition shrimp clip varieties are (in order):
-24K or "goldenback" yellow shrimp, Neocaridina
    -Neon Yellow shrimp, Neocaridina
    -Orange Rili shrimp, Neocaridina
    -Galaxy Fishbone Pinto, Caridina
    -Orange Eyed Blue Tiger, Caridina
CPK's shrimp are a mix of fire red cherries, blue velvets and sunkist/pumpkin/oranges. All of these fantastic colors are of the Neocaridina variety, meaning they are easier to care for and a great introduction to the world of shrimp keeping! Happy shrimping guys!

4:50 - When the female molts she becomes flexible enough to go into the mating position, but she's only this flexible for a few hours. This is why if you'll notice a molted shell you'll often find one of the shrimps now has eggs. Anyways they like to hide when they molt, so typically they'll hide right after the molt to stay safe until their shell hardens, so often the mating is done in a pretty hidden place. The females give off some kind of signal when they've molted to let the males know they can breed. If there's no male to breed with then the eggs don't descend from their body, you'll often see a female with a light triangle color at the base of the carapace, the next time she molts if there's a male available and the conditions are good enough in the tank then they'll breed.
I've heard people talk about difficulties breeding shrimp, but this is crazy to me, I can't stop mine from breeding lol... I just keep a heavily planted tank with a light that turns on and off on a timer to simulate daylight, this seems to be sufficient enough to keep them happy and breeding. I've heard low (or even zero) ammonia, nitrates and nitrites are important for breeding, but the plants in my tank scrub all the nitrites out of my water that can be detected with a test, so I guess really if you want to ensure good shrimp breeding a lot of plants is the way to go.
Loved the video by the way, great footage... I never thought I'd love little shrimp so much but they're adorable and amusing to watch lol.

I think they developed their cleaning skills when they evolved in marine waters where there are many small animals and plants that grow of the shrimp exoskeletons. They are really great in a 29 gallon aquarium , with a couple fancy guppies and plenty of plants and moss .
The grass shrimp are clear, but every once in a while you would get a funny one pop out , either darker or orangey, or yellow looking .

I've always been a fan of Ghost Shrimp. They're several times larger than the dwarf shrimp you cover in this video, and have really long legs (including the grabby claws). Oh, and they're named ghost shrimp because they're SUPER transparent for most of their lifespan; it can be a challenge to actually find them in your tank, because you could be looking straight through one and not realize it. But if you get in close, you can see all their little shrimp organs going to work inside of them, it's so cool.

I'm also new to shrimp and has blue neocaridina.
Just a heads up that they told me at my local fishstore. If you have diffrent coulour on your shrimps, green and red and blue for example, the colours may take eachother out and the offspring may be transparent.
There are great colourcharts om shrimps how show what colours that belongs to the same group. For example blue shrimp comes from Brown Wild shrimps that carries the blue gene.

I have a couple ghost shrimp in my tank ☺️ they’ve gotten so big and I love watching them run up the walls of my tank and float across it.

Your shrimps are so cute. Kasia, where can I get such see-through tank divider that you keep on top?

Thanks! A long time ago I was testing out different dividers and I got this one on ebay. Now I use it as a lid :P I found something a bit similar on Amazon although it might be a bit big: amzn.to/2Ejs7Xy

Hi Kasia - I also keep and breed Blue Dreams from Flip Aquatics. Rob posted a video (curtesy of another shrimp keeper) of a baby Blue Bolt (I believe) being born from a close-up view. Amazing! He posted it in 4/17/17 and it was called Pregnant Shrimp Giving Birth- Egg Hatching!

I've set up a 5.5 gallon for a neocaridina shrimp tank it's been cycling for a month now. Going to wait another month before getting shrimp for it. I'm hoping to get some at the reefexpo in march

Loved your shrimp video 💕🦐💕. I don’t know about yoga moves but in Brazilian Jujitsu there is a move we use that is called shrimping. We even do practice drills with shrimping! 😁

I have some old fish tanks I haven't been doing anything with. I really should set one up and keep some shrimp and other critters.

Great video! My father-in-law has a bunch of red neocaridina, and I love them so much. As far as I've seen, the breeding process starts with a male and female mating conventionally, and then the fertilized eggs will move from inside the body to outside by the swimming legs as seen in the video. When the babies hatch, they hatch directly from the egg membranes while attached to the swimming legs, and I'm assuming the egg shells and membranes eventually fall off or disintegrate.
