  • Search the web and you’ll find hundreds of articles videos - and thousands of opinions - on the best mics to use for radio and podcasting. One of our sponsors is Angry Audio, makers of two novel mic processors to improve and control the sound of two popular microphone families. Our longtime friend and colleague, Cornelius Gould, designed the audio processing algorithms behind these specific mic processors. “Corny” joins us to talk about this rather unique approach to mic processor design and implementation. Plus Tom Ray pops in to discuss microphone choices with Chris Tarr. Plenty of opinions and some solid advice!
    Show Notes:
Cornelius Gould is also the founder & host of The Rocketry Show podcast.

Well Kirk Harnack I hope you get this - I know what you were looking for ... and the guys didn't have time to think about it and come up with the answer. They know the answer, but live on the spot doesn't enhance analytical thinking. Echo. Walls. 1. Dynamic mics. No Condenser mics. 2. Cardioid mics. 3. Compression only... make them close talk the mics to get the effect they want... and they will when they want to sound as loud as the other guy. Play with release time. 3A. They will learn to talk across the mic and put a wind screen on it to prevent popping. 4. NO downward expansion. Downward expansion is automatic pick up of room echo because silence is gain. 5. Gate the mics. 6 Probably more that I have forgotten since the show. 7. PR-40's would be a good idea. A morning crew at Bonneville in SF won't let anybody take their PR-40's away. I don't work there.
Session #2 regarding Chris.... multiple microphones in the room (morning zoo style with 4 mics in a circle). Typical talker gets into the microphones to the left and right of him. Do some of the above, but REVERSE THE PHASE (what is that? reverse 2 and 3? - can't remember which XLR pins). The microphone to the left and right will be out of phase to the main microphone.
Hey - What do I know... I'm a sports radio engineer. I just see a new office every day and build a broadcast studio in it.

Multiple mics open at once causing that hollow sound because of comb filtering is a bugbear of mine. Use cardioid mics, I prefer to use dynamic mics in that situation. I like how Chris is talking across the front of the mic rather than into it - prevents popping. I've also had some good results from an intelligent multi-mic gate like the Shure Intellimix.
I can hear some gating on all three of you there - I wonder if thats your provider doing it?

Too bad that Bob Heil died before this program was produced.
