Big Tech for Smaller Markets with Dave Radigan - TWiRT Ep. 695
Boasting 17 signals in 4 radio markets - in New York and Pennsylvania - Radigan Media represents the kind of local radio that’s not only serving its local communities, but doing so with newer technologies. Dave Radigan wears many hats in his growing network of stations, including Chief Engineer. He’s implemented Audio over IP (linear Livewire) between studio and transmitter site, partly because he needed a bi-directional link with no audio compromises - and contact closures. And, Dave has recently opened the door to the “flexible studio”. Using AoIP audio routing tech he’s providing his staff with convenient options for live talk shows, voice-tracking, and production from the same studio, as needed. Let’s check out Dave’s reasoning about implementing the latest tech, when it makes sense to do so.

CHR Radio Engineering in Santo Domingo with Rafael Recio - TWiRT Ep. 694
zhlédnutí 212Před dnem
Many radio engineers love to visit other radio stations. We get ideas to perhaps implement in our own stations. Or sometimes we may get a sense of satisfaction thinking that we’ve done a superlative job in our own facilities - compared to others. Today we’re honored to visit the studios of 100.1 FM in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. OMG! What a drop-dead gorgeous studio! Rafael Recio is the ...
I Like to Move It, Move It with Chris Tarr - TWiRT Ep. 693

Chris Tarr just finished a long-anticipated FM transmitter move. Big implications attended this move all the way across a metro area. The new site needed a directional FM antenna, and they decided that a new transmitter made more sense than moving the old one. Chris covers a lot of ground when contemplating any transmitter site move. Kirk Harnack touches on a few pointers for IP radio microwave...

I wonder if adding copper elements to your antenna would help, considering copper is a better radiator.

  • @patuxenthistory6410

It looks much like a loop antenna turned horizontal. I operate two part 15 AM stations. I use a loop antenna made out of pvc mounted vertically with a few modifications. I was told it wouldn't work well but it works better than my vertical antenna with a capacitance hat . It also sounds better using the loop .

Three-and-a-half hours (230 miles) east of me here in Erie, PA, lies the heart of a 17-signal cluster of stations managed by CEO Dave Radigan of Radigan Media, who joins host Kirk Harnack for Episode 695 of the TWiRT Podcast. Broadcast engineers will find quite fascinating what Dave has done with his acquisitions. In many ways, this Episode is a learning-packed series of “war stories.” Episode 695 is truly worth watching. There are lots of truly neat implementations of technology to explore.

The Austin transformer is a toroidal power isolation transformer. The primary is wound directly on the toroidal core; together the core and primary winding make up the lower ring. The upper ring is the secondary winding; there is no core in the upper ring, just winding. So long as the secondary winding passes through the toroidal core, the Austin transformer will couple AC, even with the large air gap. Austin is the name of the company whose founder invented the ring transformer.

Well Kirk Harnack I hope you get this - I know what you were looking for ... and the guys didn't have time to think about it and come up with the answer. They know the answer, but live on the spot doesn't enhance analytical thinking. Echo. Walls. 1. Dynamic mics. No Condenser mics. 2. Cardioid mics. 3. Compression only... make them close talk the mics to get the effect they want... and they will when they want to sound as loud as the other guy. Play with release time. 3A. They will learn to talk across the mic and put a wind screen on it to prevent popping. 4. NO downward expansion. Downward expansion is automatic pick up of room echo because silence is gain. 5. Gate the mics. 6 Probably more that I have forgotten since the show. 7. PR-40's would be a good idea. A morning crew at Bonneville in SF won't let anybody take their PR-40's away. I don't work there. Session #2 regarding Chris.... multiple microphones in the room (morning zoo style with 4 mics in a circle). Typical talker gets into the microphones to the left and right of him. Do some of the above, but REVERSE THE PHASE (what is that? reverse 2 and 3? - can't remember which XLR pins). The microphone to the left and right will be out of phase to the main microphone. Hey - What do I know... I'm a sports radio engineer. I just see a new office every day and build a broadcast studio in it. Bill Hudson - San Francisco Bay Area - Hudson Sports Productions - W6CBS -

Multiple mics open at once causing that hollow sound because of comb filtering is a bugbear of mine. Use cardioid mics, I prefer to use dynamic mics in that situation. I like how Chris is talking across the front of the mic rather than into it - prevents popping. I've also had some good results from an intelligent multi-mic gate like the Shure Intellimix. I can hear some gating on all three of you there - I wonder if thats your provider doing it?

Then, I settle back into a comfortable chair for what I know will be an exceedingly interesting and informative hour-plus Podcast. TWiRT Podcast, Episode 683, is no exception. Shane, Kirk, and Chris have an exceedingly helpful discussion of some of the vagaries of broadcast engineers and how to prevent stress on the job from intruding into and affecting the personal lives of the engineers. Some call this “work/life balance.” I prefer to call it “good common sense.” In any case, with this important discussion, coupled with some intriguing war stories, broadcast engineers should really enjoy this Episode.
