LOW BUY CHECK IN | creating a spending budget, essentialism, shifting my focus & making sourdough 🍞

  • Hello Beauties! Here with another #LowBuy Check-In vlog in quarantine, baking my very first sourdough bread, and thinking a little more deeply on last week's video of how Low Buy has changed for me. I'm really motivated to shift my focus to what I think is essential in my low buy and in my self-love and self-development journey. That means shifting the focus away from guilt and being the "perfect" no-buyer, and really narrowing down what it means to live in moderation and be truly balanced when it comes to things I spend money on.
I've decided to create a "fun money" budget for June, so I avoid setting myself up for failure and guilt and I can still decide to purchase items here and there that bring me joy, and avoid the feeling of failure or sabotage in my budget and in my goals. If the money is not spent, it will simply go towards my student loan. I am feeling happy with this decision (as suggested by you guys in the comments, so thank you!), and am hoping it's just another actionable way I can learn to be kind to myself, while still working towards my goal of paying off my student loan.
How has your perspective on Low Buy shifted? What have you done to change things?
    #lowbuycheckin #stopshopping
Also, has anyone made sourdough bread before?!

I have some fun money (clothes, makeup, skincare, hair, salon) in my budget (about $100/month) and I actually set the option in the app that it accumulates over time (it doesn't reset every month). So I can basically "save" this fun money for a bigger purchase/salon balayage over time (almost impossible but I'm trying hard). I can also go under in that category and try to get back to $0 over time - so if I blow it one month then it has consequences on the following month, I can't just wipe it out (what happens most of the year...ugh). Something to think about, it doesn't have to reset every month. That way you won't feel the urge to spend it that month to not "lose it", and you can't either just "ooops" one month without consequences.

A fun-money budget is what got me out of my overspending pattern. It was really helpful to separate out that part of my budget, which I did for about 6 months before I actually made a full budget with all the other usual categories.

It's so crazy how many of the things we think about and grow in are similar, blows my mind🤯 All the things you talk about; setting budgets but still feel guilty, not appreciating the stuff you buy even if you thought about it, listening to the podcast about essentialism, stepping away from the tough "Dave Ramsey" style.. So cool to follow someone who is on the same path!🥰 I appreciate every video you post, you're my nr. 1 CZcamsr!🤗

A huge A for effort! Whoa, please stop the anxiety ( guilt) of going for perfection. Thank you for opening up with the struggle. As a marketing major always remember the true marketing purpose behind the brand, influencer , media etc. to get us to buy more by seeing our image in their product. Oh and of course perfecting our image with their product. Madison Ave. does an incredible job, I definitely get sucked in.

I have one and I like it. I think not every cent has to be spent for a rational important purpose ... with my "Fun Money" Line, I feel great getting Sushi, not like "oooh but it is so expensive ..." :D and also, I love stationery from time to time xD It its okay, as long as I dont "go overboard" :D

I have been making gluten-free banana bread past months. Also, I created a separate bank account for "fun money" in January. For me, it has worked really well and most times I realised I haven't spent all the money in it. But it also gives me space to buy something I have been wanting to get for myself without feeling guilty.

style apotheca try taking out cash $200. Then it’s already spent. If you spend it online, move the cash to another spot. If you don’t spend it in the budget cycle, you don’t need to replace the $200 or add to it.

I totally failed my low buy the first 5 months of this year. After the last online purchases came last week I decided that I can't continue to do this to myself. Period. Point. Blank. I realized that every payment to the credit card means massive "money leaks"! Money slipping away that I earned that can go into my long term goals. I have everything I really really need. It's time to invest long term not just for the short term.

Thanks for being so candid on your channel. I really appreciate you sharing your process with us all. So many great insights in this video. I find the concept of "essentialism" a really practical one. I've waffled between extreme minimalism and maximalist and felt guilty for the longest time about how much waste I created by trying to fit either of these molds that weren't "me". Instead this past year I've focused on what really matters and that has helped immensely. Thank you for that reminder. :)

Definitely ❤️ I always grapple with feeling like I should be a minimalist, but the concept of essentialism seems a lot more customizable to our own comfort and situation that works for us. I’m really curious to explore it more.

I was thinking about your conversation about fun money. And if you just go ahead and keep that $200 in your fun money… But then at the end of the month you have a little bit left over and you can put it on your loan. Then the fun is attributed to paying off the loan even a little bit. So something that’s hard, paying off the loan, sort of bleeds into the fun stuff in your life. I’m not too sure where you’re at right now, in 2023, but it seems like a really great opportunity to shift the meaning of paying off the loan. Omg your bread turned out FANTASTIC!!!!

It helped me the most to plan my budget including 'fun money', not to completely ban myself from shopping. I was afraid that I would behave like an addict during rehab - at some point when I forbid myself to buy, I would end buying like crazy. Finally, I planned my budget this way: rent, groceries, basic payments, savings, and small 'fun money' (it was around 100 USD).

I love "fun money" idea! I can't tolerate any strict restriction, so when I started low-buy this year (thanks a lot for inspiration!) I only set a budget that I can spend on make up and clothes and several other rules in order to decrease number of items in some categories. However, if I have something left from that amount by the end of the month, I add it to the next month budget, just in case I will want to buy something that costs more that my monthly allowed sum. That works in both directions though - if I spend some extra money, I must spend less next month.

We’re so similar! My mindset is almost identical. And I too am working through this guilt/shame thought pattern in therapy. It’s tough, but the journey is worth it!

Suggestion (take it or leave it) from a Dave Ramsey, turned J.L. Collins FI, and lover of fashion person. Don’t put the money you set aside for “fun” to pay off your loans if it isn’t spent at the end of the month. Just let it overflow into the next month. I still felt the pressure to save that money rather than have “fun”. Once I had it in my mind that no matter what, it was fun money, I felt much better overall. I’m rooting for you!

I also work with the fun money budget. I carry it over to the next month if I don't use it . Most of the times I use it though. 😂 If I overspend I spend less the next month. I also have an account for leftover fun money. For example now in lockdown I spent a lot less than what I usually would have. I also plan to use that stock of fun money for more luxurious pieces or more extensive shopping sprees, but I have only a few Euros in my stock so far. 😂 I don't put fun money toward serious stuff because I don't want to mix the two (guilt etc.). I also saw a video on you tube about how it is better to admit to not being totally frugal but still being very financially responsible at the same time. It has worked for me so far.

I have not made bread but have made brownies - not the same but both make the house smell good while baking.
The struggle with guilt really resonates with me and the idea of a “ fun money” budget is intriguing. As I sit with a basket of items in my subscription box sale cart, I am struck with an almost paralyzing fear of somehow missing out (the lure of a sale is strong for me). Perhaps having a “ fun budget” will help - my all or nothing thinking is certainly not helping me.

I just wanted to let you know that you sharing your journey started me on my low buy year and got me thinking about my goals for saving. I've broken some of my low buy rules, but just having any sort of rules has made me more intentional about what I add to my wardrobe and less spendy (I reckon I've cut my shopping expenditure in half compared to Jan - May 2019). I've also started tracking my expenditure and budgeting, so fingers crossed that it helps me save more!
I've got a budget for fun stuff. What I do is set aside an amount that will make me reasonably happy without breaking the bank. It gives me the permission to spend within reason, but at the end of the month when I don't spend it, it goes into my savings and that makes me feel accomplished! But if I do spend it, as long as I'm within budget, I feel accomplished too. Either way I win! 😁

    • @Christinamychas
      @Christinamychas  Před 4 lety +1

Absolutely!! That’s what I think I will do with mine. If I want to spend it, so be it, and if I don’t, onto the student loan it goes. Either way I don’t feel bad about it, and I think it will be liberating as hell. That’s amazing in your progress, Joey!

My low buy has sucked ass... being stuck in “stay at home” has made me want to makeover my small space.. also I have been expanding my capsule wardrobe because there have been some awesome online sales.. but I need to stop. I just unsubscribed everything again, but so far this year I have paid off 4 student loans and both of my credit cards have zero balance, for now. So since I have been hacking away at my loans, I felt like I need to treat myself, but I go overboard and then don’t know when to stop.
Also if you dust a little flour on your hands when turning and shaping it won’t stick as much.
