As a 56-year-old Dutchman, I dare say that planning your free time is something of the last 40 years, before then it was "oh I'm in the area, let's go visit grandma, aunt" nice and spontaneous , you could even leave the back door open without having to worry, everything has changed over the years and that's a shame.
51 here and yes I miss those times. I think people are less social now
It sure was different. Coming back from a day out? Just drop at a relative for a quick coffee.
I am 55 and confirm that. Before when mothers didn't work or only part time it was very normal that people visited eachother. Now people are busy with the chores in the house in the evening. I remember from my childhood that friends and family just visited us unannounced at 8 pm, that was kind of national coffeetime in the evening. Also I remember the un announced saturday morning visits at 10.30. Nowadays people are often not yet dressed for the day at that time.
In this time a psychotherapie came in and influenced all therapists from tony Harris, i believe.
His book was named: i'm ok, you are ok.
It called all kind of indirectness a form of manipulation and making people sick.
It also stimulate to make your own plan and say thing right as they where.
Let people quess what you want and think make people sick.
He called it: Het spelletje van 'raden maar'.
Maybe it was a good advice but actually it was not, al the times because.....
Old people did say what they want and think but used different words and codes to tell people that way.
I've a oldery friend who steuggle with that all the time because young people doesn't understand the codes and signs anymore and she is not able to use the new way of communication.
I think we plan alot because we have a lot of "free time". We have somemuch of this free time that we fill it up completely, leaving no room for spontanious moments.
you're better off with no debt, if you can't buy it, don't buy it. if you have to save for it, it's so much more fun if you can buy it
I think I must be Dutch 😂 I follow every single one of these habits in my everyday life. Didn’t realize it was very “Dutch” to do so
Where I live - Twente - we have a regional saying that is usually written on a tile in Delft Blue painting to hang on the wall. The saying is (in dialect): "Kom vrouw wie goat noar bedde waant de leu wilt noar hoes". It translates as "Come wife we go to bed because the people want to go home". It is a way to end a visit to your house. You can also say it when a guest yawns. 😀
Or just say to the guests: can the last one put out the lights?
My grandparents liked to go on vacation to Germany and they bought a plaque there that they put on the bathroom wall.
It says: "Wer Gelt hat, schickt seine Frau ins Bad. Wer keiner hat, wäscht Sie selber ab"

As a Dutch I can concur all of these facts . And yes we Dutch are often a very tight group(s) and don’t like to low strangers in . And yes we do like to plan a lot including , date & time , number of people and who .
Complaining about the weather is our “national sport” 😂
I understand that your freedom is important, but as you said. Your own time is valueble! So planning in advance really is respecting yourself, and your own being ❤️

6:25 This! This is why I look our Dutch ways. Of course it can sometimes feel like you are not important for the other person if they can only plan to meet up in a couple of weeks. But I really like my private time and with that also respect that of the other person. Even with my closest friends I would at least message them beforehand if I can come by, and I appreciate when they do the same.
On the other hand, as I am a single lady without kids, I am not that busy that planning something with friends would take weeks.
Yup got a couple of single friends (im one to) we ussualy only meet in the weekends and it happens often enough we just make plans an hour or so before we meet. Ofcourse nobody is insulted if they say no.

A few months ago, a friend said he might come by in the next week or so but didnt make an appointment afterward. He just suddenly showed up to go out for lunch while I was working from home in my sweatpants! I was positively affronted.
Had to excuse myself to go upstairs and put some pants on before we went out. Very impolite of him. I made sure to tell him, that was not acceptable. And he apologized, as he should.
The best way to start a conversation with someone…just start with the current weather.

I am glad it isn't that freezing cold as last week, a bit drizzly, but hey I have a leather coat, so it doesn't bother me.
As a 78 year old Dutchman I only planned my business appointments and my wedding in advance. Maybe the difference is, that I lived in the East and later South part of the Netherlands. I never pretended to be so popular, that I had to plan my private appointments. Doe normaal/Act normal.
As others say, all that planning is of recent years, and it is not always a pleasant way of life. Spontaneous actions were common until the nineties and made life more pleasant and relaxed and gave a freedom that really existed. That included that one could say that the moment was not convenient if somebody rang your door, so no 'stealing' of your time.
Also funny to see Jovies Home: when I was President for a day 😊 she would get my vote
I try not to plan as much as I can. Not all Dutch people plan everything months ahead, I don't like that at all. I only do it if I can't avoid it. I do like to be on time though. I don't want people to wait for me and waste their time.
I'm a dutchie, and friends and family can drop by at any time

Living in The Netherlands I I've been waking my dog for 6 years in any kind of weather and even on a rainy or stormy day I don't mind!😊 I love my dog and getting to walk with him every day is a privilege. My dog however doesn't like to go out when it's rainy or when really warm. 😅
8:40 "uitwaaien" there is no real English translation for it, "Get windblown": but when it gets stormy, high winds ( not life threatening ofcourse) Dutch go out for a walk on the beach, lakesides.. get batterred by the winds, lean aganinst the wind while walking for a mile or 5... when you get home, your head is empty, cleared, bad day, bad thoughts have litterally "gone with the wind" ... but if in a non-seabased village, town, citgy, wherever... just go.... walk in the wind, clears yopur head and it is awesome!!
I have lived in the Netherlands for 30+ years, and even with a job that involves a lot of travel, and family responsibilties, girlfriends, etc, the days I feel like I would need a car occur maybe once a month or every couple months.
Need to get somewhere for work? Odds are you'll get there just as fast taking the train because of the insane traffic during rush hour. Usually when a collegue is going in the same direction and offers to let me ride with him, it takes longer than it would if I took the train.
Need to move something? Cheaper to call a moving company than own a car for a month.
The only thing it would be good for is picking up chicks. Thats an advantage. Chicks like fancy cars and being picked up in one. But imo its a lot more fun sitting on a train smooching for an hour isntead of having to pay attention to the road.
17:07 "Most things are miles away", but even that is no excuse to always use a car. I work 2 hours from home, but I use a train instead of a car to get to work. Ofc. a lot of countries lack good public transport infrastructure (like in the USA), so in those cases you indeed need a car.
Me and my son walked today in the rain to a restaurant for diner. Cozy under an umbrella ☔️

I am also from the Netherlands. But I had my "BOAT LICENSE" first. And 1 1/2 years later my driving license. I didn't need a driver's license. But from, my A swimming diploma. I got a boat from my parents. And when I turned 17, I bought together with my twin brother and father. A speedboat. And you need a diploma for that in the Netherlands. And I have it. "Sail" boat. That. slow is over 20 km/h, up to 20 meters, 56/57feet. Or 15 meters. Speedboat max. With the Max speed that is allowed at that place.

It's funny that she mentioned the saying at 11:46 as children we've been thought the opposite. "Kinderen die vragen worden overgeslagen" is a saying that Children who ask will be skipped/ ignored which is true! We are so stubborn that we are really good in asking even that we are being told differently as kids lol

My friends and i do drop in on eachother without calling. And also if its dinner time we just Cook something up and don't say you have to go because i don't have enough
when there are storms.. not hurricanes, but yes the ones you can lean on to.. Dutch folks go to the beach... not to swim, no, to walk, "uitwaien" one word that is truly untranslatable to make sense.. here is a go on it.. "let-the-wind-blow-you-clean" ish... when there is a storm, dutch paople go to dikes, beaches and walk..just walk.. let the wind blow the head clean.. shout against it, it will blow away.. or like the handcloth..it scrubs away tghe bad things, the storm blows it off of you.
It's funny that watching these videos make me realise that we, as dutchies, are pretty cool🙃. The down to earth, be who you are, no nonsense is so normal that its nice to hear that can be an example for other countries 😊
We (the dutch) plan everything because watching youtube videos takes up a lot of time so you always need to make an appointment ;p
One thing about the driver's license: when applying for jobs the potential employer does assume you have a license. Depending on what type of work it is they might not have an issue with it if you don't turn out to have a license, but the assumption's definitely there
About bargains, there is also a 'hidden'' reason to do homework before buying; "do I grant (there is no opposite word for begrudge) the shop/person my money". Let's say the not-begrudge-factor.
That planning thing isn't that tight though.
But instead of dropping by unannounced, we do usually prefer to call or message ahead and make sure it isn't an inconvenience. (As well as preventing our own inconvenience of going through that awkward situation and wasting time going to someone's house)
But like many things, it's a personal thing. Some people are completely fine with it, some people even have that [people just come by] environment for themselves. I'm not like that, but I knew someone who's like that. Whenever I was at his house, sometimes people could just randomly come by and join [the chill group].
If you are out in the rain in the winter, it is also healthy. You build up resistance
We have an idiom, a saying, for people being friendly to unexpected guests. De zoete inval. The sweet raid. Meaning you can always come by, also unexpected, we will always welcome you. My grandparents were like that and my parents also, my sister and her family also, me not so.
Sometimes when i'm going to bed.I can not sleep because i'm already thinking off the next day what i have to do🙈 my car is broken and i had to go to work today it was raining and i had to go with the bike.☹😬I only dress up when i have a party! Love your reactions😊 much love from the Netherlands.

Lady friend of mine asked me if she could ride with me to marchingband rehearsal... when 10 mionutes on the way she asked for a pack of cigarettes to btring along.. all I had to do is send her a Tikkie, a request from my bank to hers to transfer the money I payed for HER cigarettes
A Problem in the US with car usage is directly linked to zoning. If they would simply allow some commerce into residential zones, you could have a small supermarket at walking distance, maybe even a bakery, a grocer, a butcher, or even one or two restaurants or diners, you wouldn't need to use a car so much. Your food quality would improve, especially bread that wouldn't need to be loaded up with chemicals to keep it "fresh". You could have your daily "bread-run" and have freshly baked bread.
Mind you, it would help if residential areas came with actual sidewalks to walk to the shops.

even in the netherlands in the smaller places you need a car to go get shopping only the big citys you can walk ore bike yes i live in amsterdam alberhein is 800 meters from my house but they have free parking so i go by car do every think now by car or on my motorbike so not all just bike

Its not just spread out its also bad zoning and bad infrastructure. If you allow for shops to be around a few blocks over or around the corner with good side ways and bike paths you can actually do it. Now if you live in the countryside yes you need a car do your shopping nothing wrong with that bur most people live in places that are big enough that it can at least sustain a local corner shop and some take out place. put some grocery shops a barber, a pub and some clothing shops in a few key earia's and can create a nice place for people to go to and most will still be able to walk or bike to it with the right infrastructure.

yepe, doing the research is a well known thing for me.. In June i said I wanted a new phone. My best friend suggested the same phone he was using... Looking for bargans, compairing it with many other phones.. and in November i bought it. (black friday sale)
when you go some where you should take your time .... i cycle for miles to go somewhere or if it is really too far i take the public transportation i do not need a car and will never get one i plan the day ( not planning in weeks in advance LOL ) and go on with it plus it keeps me healthy .. i feel good and that is the most important part.

I believe it was she who had he "phone call" from Australia .. and where "I love you"" was mentioned at the end of every scentence, These are words with impact, not to be taken lightly... When a Dutchy says these words they mean it. Dutch people don't throw it like sprinkles, they say it when they mean it. I am dutch .....am direct ...great time management ...but i hardly plan anything ....i dont know if i want to swim next week for example i go swim when i feel like swimming 😃
I had lunch with my brothers and sister two weeks ago and I know I can wait for that 'tikkie'. It's not my brothers can't afford it, but it's normal we all pay for ourselves and not let someone else pick up the bill. Often one pays for all but you will get that 'tikkie' for sure, lol.

If America used a more European style of building cities, people would be far more likely to walk or bicycle.
And for longer distances, you have public transportation.

I for one would be hesitant to buy a car from the Randstad..Amsterdam, Rotterdam...West Netherlands... these where only traveling few miles, but got stuck in traffic jams.. not driving ...just warming up the engine.. cars where made to drive, not to be stuck in traffic jams.. if you by one of these with the intention to actually put miles or here km's on it.. you'll be in for a bad surprise.. Atm I have a 2007 second hand with 346.000 km on it, bought it with 160.000 or so on the counter. 4 years ago.. and it isn't a diesel
Because of the size of the country, Dutch people are in eachother's neighbourhood a lot more often. When you live in Australia or the USA, you have to cease the opportunity of course.

About planning; my Filipino wife is much more of a planner than I am, haha! At least with big things like vacations. With daily routines, it's me.
About researching things that you want to buy; especially with electronics I already start investigating more than half a year before buying it, in some cases. I want the best quality within my budget and also often do look a tiny bit above my budget to see if I can get a HUGE improvement with a tiny bit extra money, but that's rarely worth it.
Also, when on vacation, my Dutch "Spider senses" often go off when I think we're going to get scammed.

Me and many with me work in shifts... we don't have 9 - 5 jobs.. our workday atarts 6 am, and before that we need to be at job site to start at 6... in many towns there aren't busses or trains .. period.. so, yes I drive by car to work. y car, and no.. I am Dutch, love my bike, but I won't ride it starting 4 am to do a 2 hours ride to job.. no trhanks..

Or go direct to steward&straus usa , actual producer/manufacturer and supplier “ clothing factories and companies in Pakistan “ and order from them that exact same jacket for a at the door delivery in less then 2 weeks for less then €65-

Direct and efficient. Yep. Just say what you mean. It helps us both out in the end. Connected to that is that we don't get offended by every little thing. And funny to see that she (in the video) now sees what us Dutchies see when an Australian, Brit or (especially) American person acts overly friendly. Just so fake! And no, you don't just drop by when in the neighbourhood with Dutch people. BUT! There are always one or two exceptions to that rule. Like your best friend for instance.
Yes. I know it's been a long time. But I'm already a "Fossil". But in 1994, with the European Jamborie. We sat on a terrace, near the harbor of Zeewolde. With 37 people. And that was an annoyance for the terrace owner. We spent the first afternoon, €1236,-. (then x 2..... to Guldens) And had put everything on 1 receipt! So we broke everything down into pieces. And pay with "SMALL CASH". In cash! Then we were not allowed to come anymore. But in 1995. With the World Jamborie? Was it he who liked to have us on his terrace. What do you think? Big middle finger! We had already found something else!

About the directness... Yes we are direct. But what also makes us infamous for the directness is that we translate our "dutch" directness directly into english, where it just doesn't fit in the language as well, especially when a dutchy doesn't speak it that fluently, it misses a lot of nuance that would be there when it was said in dutch.
The planning is a terrible downside of our culture I think. I don't like to plan, I don't know now if I feel like visiting someone 6 weeks from now, in 6 weeks I might feel like doing something completely different. I plan as little as possible, except from some major events, I try to stay within the 2 weeks with my planning.

These are all true but I think 'Tikkie' is more for students low on cash? I'm having a visitor from Brazil over and pay for everything, no worries. But then I see something on a site from Japan for like 60 dollars and I offer 50 dollars. And often they just agree. So that's 10 dollars saved I can now spend on beers. Few years ago I needed an new tv and it was already on sale. I still got it cheaper. So indeed if you don't ask you're never gonna get a yes.

All these videos about the Netherlands and the Dutch have made me a bit more arrogant/patriotic about my country, I noticed. And not on purpose. I just found out so many new things and positive things and confirmation about the positive things I already knew in those videos, that it's kinda hard not to be proud. It almost makes me forget all the shitty things we should be shamed of as Dutchies. Almost. Ha! ;-)

Your comments on the need for cars for Americans hit a nerve for me. I actually worry... what would happen in a serious solar flare event? Europe can walk to their stores, the Usa mostly cannot. That is scary. I mean, a lot of you ARE "prepared" so to speak for an emergency of a week or two, but imagine cars just.... not working. I think a lot of Americans would get fit really fast for all the biking they'd be doing! 😁
I do realize that in Europe too the supplying would instantly be in trouble too.
Do they even all own a bike? They probably need to walk to a store 1st to buy one 🤣

To go on your bike isn't true, that's in the city, if you live over here in a village believe me you need a car and that bike thing is a child thing and a city thing and over here where I live you can't live without your car or mopet to get to the store and you don't see that many bikes over here and mostly you see children and woman biking but not that many men or woman when they work miles away from home. With the weather here you don't wanna go on your bike for 30 kilometers to get to the city because you work over there. In a city that is very different and then a bikes is better to use in what kind of weather also with the driving through the city you are faster then when you go in your car. I lived in the city and had a flat tire and called my ex so please bring me the pump to blow up the tire so I can drive home again, I was in 15 minutes back home and he needed 40 minutes to come home, so yes then I only used a bike, since I live on the country side you can't live without a car or mopet because it is to far to drive on a bike to the store or go to the hospital for a checkup.
You said it's annoying when people do what they want with your time, but earlier in the video you say you wouldn't want to adopt the "Dutch planning" .... that doesn't make sense. After you make a video you want to hang out with your friends ..... but they're busy doing something, so they have to stop to see who is bothering them at their door.... Then it's you, who want to hang out with them. This planning is just to avoid disappointments and to make things go smoothly. And like you, I also am rather 15 minutes early than 1 minute late. And I haven't been in the military.

In the real word nothing is for free , and no one will hand you anything for free . “ Everyone pays their own shit “ thus tikkie l it makes payment for a group of friends at the bar easy and fast = efficient and effective . And the rest can coff up their share of the bill at a later time back , like when on the bus as the group of friends is taking the bus back home .

Yey a car with low milage... use it to drive 100 miles and packings crumble, making cilinders pop out.. good job.. use bicycle for the mail, or small groceries.. don't make monthly groceries, do them day by day..by bicycle..
