Agreed, while parenting is definitely tough for adults, taking them to a movie is only temporary. Take them to a movie they’ll WANT to see, not a cheap cash-grab you read on the grossing kids movie list. If you ever need some time away from the kids, hire a babysitter. At least the kids will remember a (usually kind) babysitter instead of a cringy movie their mom said “will you stop crying if I show you this shitty movie?”

    1. Whatever happened to General Audiences? You know material intended for both children and adults of all ages, did that just suddenly cease to exist?
    2. So because something is for Kids, that means it should no longer be subject to any standards of quality. I'm sure those people would say the same thing for food, toys, and clothes. It's just for kids, why should any of it be good.

I, too, was pleasantly surprised by The Grinch. I recall that the director of the live-action movie said because he recognized he couldn't compete with the Chuck Jones adaptation, he went in a contrary direction to make something that has its own identity---a grittier, wittier, more cynical one. With that in mind, I believe the Illumination take forms a trifecta by being the "light and feel-good" film of the bunch.
Life of Pets 2 was such a forgettable flick for me, to the point that I needed to remember a specific plot (the sheep farm) to remember the rest of the film (possibly if I had even seen it). Plots just appeared and disappeared as they pleased (the neck-scratching, in particular, being near-literally tossed once it's served its purpose), and there were too many of them present overall to form a decently complex narrative, the worst offender being perhaps the circus which, what, only comes up in the second half of the film to set up a climactic sequence? At least the first film knew where it was going with everything, so I'd probably swap these two in my own rankings, relative to each other.
I was actually kind of impressed with what Gru's VA did in Despicable Me 3. The twin's voice sounded different enough but somewhat similar enough to make it work, and the same voice actor during one scene managed to convincingly act out the brothers imitating each other. That's some vocal talent, if you ask me. The film itself was meh, however.
The Lorax could've been such a great adaptation, although I'll admit I still enjoyed it to an extent. Imagine if for all the time spent messing around, we got some proper expansion into the settings, the characters' psyches and motivations, and all that; after all, the original adaptation is mostly just us watching the industry grow with a few character exchanges here and there until the climax, not much actual plot progression. An update for modern audiences would've been an opportunity to not only construct a proper feature-length story but also take the aspects of today, cultural and otherwise, and throw them back at the viewers in a way that matters. The film's unused song "Biggerin'" gives a glimpse of what could've been a considerably heavier-feeling work and is what got me thinking about the film's potential in the first place. It seriously could've possibly been Illumination's greatest film, even in the scenario where the others were made better.

The animation and character models range from pretty good to pretty bad, story and writing are mediocre when it's focused but pretty bad when it splits into a ton of sub plots, however I always appreciate their use of colour, light and shadow. Zootopia's world actually felt like a universe where animals had become the dominant lifeform, and you see everything in that universe accommodate for each type of animal. Sing! doesn't do that. "It's for kids" is *never* an excuse for a bad, lazy story.
A kid's mind is a sponge: when they see something, it influences them for life whether they realize it or not. Sure, most kids will sit through anything adults choose, but that's exactly why adults need to choose high-quality media!
Saying "it's for kids so it's bound to be dumb" basically means "we *can* profit by wasting children's time with garbage, so we will!" It ignores the question of whether you *should* waste kids' time with garbage.
Even if something goes over kids' heads, it's better to broaden their horizons with something they'll understand later, instead of stunting their perspective with generic pop culture dreck.

A sign of a good kids movie is when a child spends months of their life being enraptured by it's concepts. When i was a little kid trying to catch the 'toys' that I owned, thinking they were going to spring to life because of Toy story (and toy soldiers), or having dreams and thoughts back to the visual style of nightmare before Christmas, having the visuals stuck in my head.
I was obviously older when i watched despicable me, but nothing stuck, nothing kept my brain occupied thinking about it over and over.
Movies overall have a different effect when you're an adult of course. But there is nothing there in these movies that could stick with someone like the movies I grew up with.

Asking for every movie to be toy story is a bit much in my mind. Something below the first ice age movie would be where I’d start judging quality. • @ozzo1121
      @ozzo1121 Před 3 lety +38

I think a good example of this in animation for older audiences is ratatouille.
I rewatched it a few weeks ago and my God have I not been able to stop thinking about how well done it is. Like just the way the themes and concepts and even the animation itself is handled just feels so... smart to me and it’s stuck with me for a while.
And for those that say that that shit doesn’t affect or matter to kids, my 9 year old sister, who has watched all kinds of animated movies, says that what she considers to be the “best” animated movies are Spirited Away (It’s worth mentioning though that I told her I had her watch this because it was “one of the best” so that one may be biased), Lion King, Ratatouille, and Fantastic mr fox (of ALL movies for a kid to favor). Mind you, these weren’t the answer when I asked for her favorites (although she’s said all 3 of this movies are in her top 10), but what she considers best. I admit she’s always been a bit more mature than her peers, but she’s still a 9 year old kid, and I think that says a lot.
The reason I asked her for her two opinions on “best” animated movies and her “favorite” animated movies was because, well, as a long time lover of animation, I was curious on whether or not kids make that distinction or just consume movies to consume it. I think it’s a mix of both: they’ll watch anything and, as long as it’s entertaining, say it was good and move on, but at the same time they can tell some things are better than others. Then again, as I said, my sister is kinda different, ask another 9 year old and they’ll prolly say the best animated movie of all time is boss baby while their favorite is the emoji movie idk

I despise when people say, "It's just a kids movie," when others are criticizing kids movies. Just because they're aimed towards kids doesn't mean they get a pass to be garbage--if anything, that should be a bad sign. Children's stories are supposed to be lessons, something to teach children while also giving them entertainment. If we give them garbage, they'll still pull meaning out of it--the issue is that meaning can be harmful. What happened to teaching children lessons in stories? What happened to creativity? What happened to movies like Coraline, Toy story, or hell, even the original Grimm's fairy tales? Just because a movie is aimed towards children shouldn't mean they get to be garbage.

It reminds me of the "it's just a game" excuse, honestly. There's nothing that should excuse poor production quality just because the given audience is "gullible" or "easy to persuade". Any piece of produced media can and will have people outside of the intended audience scrutinizing it, and any concerns they raise shouldn't be discredited just because they're not part of that target audience.
I mean for Pete's sake, especially when it comes to content engineered to children, you SHOULD focus on what you're producing. Children are incredibly susceptible and gain a good portion of their learning through media. If you're producing less than stellar content with kids specifically in mind, why is that an excuse to make it low quality? Wouldn't it be a better business model to invest more effort, so it's rewatched more, kept as a household icon, and lives through the generations of content? Sure, low effort allows for ready-made cash grab, but... that's it. There's no sustainability there.

My SO read Sing as an ensemble movie about people from a bunch of different walks of life coming together to make art and "make it" a lot of the characters are built as parallels to where a lot of the kid's parents could possibly be at in life, like the Pig who feels tied down to her domestic life, or the gorilla trying to work his way out of an oppressive system.
