    Nice info, still relevant. Kind of wish you talked about filming overhead and the lenses/settings you use for the overhead gameplay, especially when you're using a camera and can't use lightweight jib arms/booms that people commonly recommend.

    Thank you for this! This is great stuff.
    I've been filming myself playing tabletop baseball sims, and have been wondering what the best approach is to make the videos easier to watch. There are a bunch of guys out there who film themselves playing stuff like Strat-O-Matic, but the audio tends to be very poor and the video borders on unwatchable.
    I doubt I'll ever become as professional as you, though this gives me a lot of ideas for how to approach things. Thank you!

    Hey! 😊👋🏻 I recently started making some board game content over on my channel and stumbled across your video while searching for some tips on making my content better! This was super helpful! Thank you! I do have one question about an overhead tripod, is there an attachment you use on a regular tripod that puts the camera above your gaming table? I also have manfrotto tripods and I was wondering if they specifically sell an overhead tripod or attachment? Thank you so much again for the help!

    A very interesting video and great so see your setup. I have just started in the board game video world and it is all very new to me. I am slowly learning the ropes.
    I am using a mobile phone that can shoot 1080p at 60fps (or 30fps). I am using kdenlive for editing (only basic stuff).
    One of the questions I have is best settings/format/quality to render the video in for upload to CZcams? Any hints for this that you would care to share.

I'm thinking of recording solo gameplay of LotR - Journeys in Middle Earth or one of the D&D board games, but don't want to spend time on recording different angles and cutting and editing. What are your thoughts on headcams? Would this be an option? Or will people watching my gameplay get motion sickness?

    Thanks for doing this and for your great reviews. In addition to the gear, can you share with us the software that you use to make your content look so professional. That can be a video on to itself. Also, how do you plan your videos, do you have an idea of what you want to say in front of the camera, and what you want to be in the B Roll. Is the B Roll filmed together or separately later on? If I want to do something like this, using my phone and camera, what do you think is a good cheap/free to use video editing software that I can try if I don’t want to buy expensive software like Adobe Premiere. What about the microphone? What kind of microphone is good? There are so many different types of microphones, why do you use the one you do? (Another video on mics?). Thanks for doing what you do and I look forward to your reply.

    Have you ever use OBS to record your videos and control multiple cameras, rather than record individual footage and then edit? I am trying to use OBS not necessarily to stream but to record and use a stream deck to be able to utilize multiple scenes as well as other pop-ups and having less to edit after. I just got a canon dslr sl3 and I can't figure out how to use it properly with OBS, the initial idea was to use it for the overhead shot and record in 4k and be able to use that footage to zoom in after the fact on individual players area at 1080p, and just use some webcams on corners of the main footage showing the players. Mostly focusing on the table and gameplay but have scenes in which I can switch from time to time to show players reactions and interactions. If you have any inputs or suggestions on how to do this, I would love to hear your suggestions

    How do you set up your lights so you dont have glare from the game boards or cards?

  • @JakubPoniatowski
    @JakubPoniatowski Před 5 lety +11

    That's a great setup! Thanks for sharing. I had a question about lighting, how do you prevent the glare from the board game components which have a glossy finish a lot of times. Especially for the top down cam?
    Also, depending on your setup be careful witht he condenser mic for an interview style or multi-person podcast. Those are great for one person but multiple people in one room makes it really difficult to isolate the audio and they have a lot of bleed. This makes it difficult to get clean audio in the final product especially if you are doing any sort of post production with levels and level matching.

    I'm working on upping the quality of my videos and you certainly are a great example of how a professionally filmed and edited review, playthrough, unboxing can look like.
    The hardest part in filming is having to restart my camera after 20 minutes of filming. I don't want to switch gears just now. What could I do?

    • @Quackalope
      @Quackalope  Před 4 lety +2

      Thank you - I am glad you found this video for reference!
      The 20 min cycle is a big challenge - my Gh5s allow me to film without limitation. Honestly, I don't have a perfect solution for you. A second angle staggered by 5 min and / or b-roll would help you clean up the cut in editing. A camera like the GH5 with no limitations would fix the problem - or a simple stop watch to help you track time easier. At the end of the day it is about working with what you have in moment - find ways to reduce the stress that time restriction adds. Film in tight segments you can edit, add a clock so you never go over time, get a wall power cable so you can start and stop quickly without worrying about battery and other problems.
      For me - when I filmed on canon I would always have a camera person to stagger the cuts - one camera hits 30min and stops - the other is still filming at 25min - so there was never a break.

    Can you link the lenses you are using? I’m using a GH5 too and I’m looking for some glass options. I have a 25mm and the 12-35. Considering the metabones adapter and Sigma combo but that’s a big jump. Not sure if that’s a good investment for board game content.

    • @Quackalope
      @Quackalope  Před 5 lety +1

      My main lens is the - Rokinon cine 35mm T1.5 4/3 - however I have had good luck with any of the Rokinon cine glass depending on the focal length you need. The 35 is great for hand holding/shoulders up interviews - something wider is great for room shots and full body interviews - and tighter like the 85 is best for tripod use and close controlled shots. The 12 - 35 you have is a powerful little piece of glass - what are you trying to accomplish with the new glass you don't feel like you can do with your current setup?

    • @boardgamecloset
      @boardgamecloset Před 5 lety +1

      @@Quackalope That's a great question. Mainly I am hoping for some more interesting shots, but then again maybe that's just a creativity thing instead of a "need more gear" kinda thing. I was thinking of picking up some kind of a macro lens. What are you using for that?

    • @Quackalope
      @Quackalope  Před 5 lety +1

      The closer b-roll shots I do for video are all mostly done with the 35 I listed above - it will open up more than the 12-35 you have giving you a little more blur to the background of your subject - creativity and not gear is often the challenge :P unless you know a specific shot / or improvement that gear will have - you often don’t need it - instead I would focus on copying other creators - find people in the commercial world, the BG world, or other mediums doing crazy things and try to replicate those effects - that’s one reason I listed the 3 creators at the end of the video :P go steal some ideas from them - and then make those ideas your own as you experiment with them.

    Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed your Middara video and it made me want to create better content. I usually just take photos for Instagram, but I was wondering how to eliminate glare. I just have an overhead fan light.

    • @Quackalope
      @Quackalope  Před 5 lety +1

      Thank you :) I am glad you enjoyed the Middara video - the most important thing to remember is that where you are starting matters a whole lot less than where you are going - so with time, awareness, and feedback we can all improve in a lot of ways.
      Photos for Instagram with glare - I am assuming you are on a phone - most reflective cards or surfaces will pick up a reflection from the light especially when it is directly above - my advice would be to play around with two potential methods - you could play around with a film or translucent sheet near the light to help reduce how direct it is - even a makeshift softbox you could grab (white foam walls with a translucent paper across the top) might help (however this is harder to set up and takes more time - it also might block to much of the light) - the main advice I have is to find another light source that is at more of an angle - window lighting is often the solution - set the game up next to a window without any direct sunlight or with a soft curtain and move around to find angles that do not have glare from the window itself - there will always be a little glare depending on how you shoot but this will fix an overhead glare and likely give you a nicer quality of light overall.
      If you are on a camera - grab a cheap hot shoe transmitter and receiver - a cheap flash or two and start playing with non-direct off-camera flash - bounce if off the walls and ceiling to smooth the light out.
      TLDR - set up and practice near a new source light - specifically window light without direct sun.

    • @SwordandBoardGames
      @SwordandBoardGames Před 5 lety +1

      Quackalope I appreciate the great response. Most of my free time is at night, so window lighting isn’t an option for me. I’ll look more into soft boxes, thank you very much for trying to improve the quality of our hobby.

    • @Quackalope
      @Quackalope  Před 5 lety +1

      @@SwordandBoardGames - I thought that might be the case - Can you give me more information on what you are shooting with? if it is your cellphone a second option would be to change the light source in another way - you can get a cheap LED light panel off amazon and some filters - you will need to still use a softbox / or filter paper to reduce how directional the light is - but that will allow you to have more control and move the light around your space to reduce glare. The glare is like a mirror reflection - you just need to at an angle where the mirror / light wont hit you - room lights are top down and can not be moved - that makes it much harder to avoid glare - a led panel could be raised, lower, or angled in a way that would help. Also - they can be nice to have for game nights anyways - I always have one set up so we can see the cards well at night.

    • @SwordandBoardGames
      @SwordandBoardGames Před 5 lety +1

      Quackalope I mostly shoot with my phone, however I do have a mid level Nikon that I don’t know how to use. That’s next on the list of self improvement.

    • @Quackalope
      @Quackalope  Před 5 lety +1

      @@SwordandBoardGames Makes sense - phones do great work! I would maybe grab a cheap led light and mess around with it a bit - with the Nikon - turn it to Manuel and just master the 3 settings - Shutter speed (always double the lens length if you don't want blur), Apature (the iris of the lens, controls what and how much is in focus), and then ISO (digital light enhancement - if it is very high you will have digital grain)

    Good video! I ended up watching this because one of my son's friends is getting ready to launch a new game and I'm helping him with the video. (I own a business that shoots action, adventure and corporate video.) Just one bit of constructive criticism: You may want to filter the light that's on you a little more or turn it down just a bit (if you can) as it is reflecting on your forehead with a fair amount of glare.

    • @Quackalope
      @Quackalope  Před 4 lety +1
