- Here is a recording taken from a cassette tape dating from February 1987 of a session from Tony Williams' Rockers FM radio show. This was broadcast on Sunday afternoons during the 1980's on BBC Radio London.
Much of the music coming from Jamaica at this time was digital and computerised and Tony Williams named it "Hi-Tech Style". This tape is a historical document of the dancehall reggae sounds popular in early 1987. There are a couple of slow lovers numbers too.
This set features well-known reggae artists such as Linval Thomson, Aswad, Leroy Smart, Freddie McGregor, Al Campbell, Gregory Isaacs, plus many others, some of whom I don't recognise.
Take a trip back in time and have a listen to the music back then, which still sounds fresh and relevant today.

"Tony Williams with a Sunday afternoon special!" great memories, tuned in first when I was 13 and got totally hooked!
Rockers FM, I had real issues getting this programme on MW. Couldn't get Radio London on FM in Southampton.
However, somewhere on higher ground like ChiLworth, where the M3 starts FM reception was receivable. But it meant carrying a boom box 3 miles up the Avenue. Alternatively I could sit up on the roof tiles next to the chimney stack for hours.
All I can say, still have those faint reception recordings on tape.

Love the fx and echoes added a really important flavour to the shows. One of the best shows ever on BBC radio.

I remember this session. In fact, I think I may still have the tape. Tony Williams I used to listen on Sunday afternoons as well as Friday nights and in between on Capital Radio on Saturdays you will get David 'Ram Jam' Rodigan from 8-11pm. Great times. 23:08: that synth voice, creepy af!
I recall one Friday night Tony Williams show where he shared it with with JBC's Owen Brown (known as OBee). I also can't forget the David Rodigan & Barry Gee clashes on Capital radio. Great, great,great!
