- Here’s a few tips on how to apply Total Boats Marine Spar Varnish.
One of the important steps that I didn’t realize is you need to first build the coats up with the gloss varnish if you intend to use a satin finish. So, In this case all apply for coats of the gloss sanding in between coats with 320 sandpaper before applying the two final coats of satin.

In Egypt, we repair the wood with putty, then sand it, then use marine varnish or what is known as a wood sealer, then sand it after drying, then apply another soft, specially made putty, then sand it, then apply varnish and sand it, then apply a wood primer In order to show the hidden defects and repair them, then sand them, then start applying the dye in several layers, whenever it dries, add another layer as needed.
Well done! Learned a lot with 4 coats of gloss and Then two coats satin finish. I want a satin top coat so this was so helpful. The repeated explanations, applications tips and visuals were superb. Thank you!
Love the table. I've never used Total Boat... of any sort. I'll have to find some and give it a try. I have used a spar urethane on a few outdoor projects for a buddy of mine who owns a bar in Austin, TX. I made a "memorial sign" that is out on the outdoor deck for customers to dine and enjoy a beer outside. It took forever for that spar urethane to cure inside my shop... we are talking weeks just for a 24" × 24" sign! I'll be getting some of this Total Boat ASAP! Great vid!
Very informative video. I've been wanting to try that Total Boat product so this will be very helpful. Thanks so much for sharing this!
Jones thank you for this video. I'm near completion of a desk and have been entertaining the idea of using epoxy to compliment the beauty of wood grains.
That's a nice table. I like the contrast of the red grandis sides.
Amazing video, Jon!! Great tips and techniques to get the perfect satin finish. This table is gorgeous!!
Thanks!!
Great tips, Jon! Thanks a lot! 😃
One last thing you can do (if necessary or if you want to) is to burnish it with brown paper. It removes every little imperfection in case there's any. 😊
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
@@rd-ch1on Well... You just can't use it as a gorilla, putting too much force into it. 😬
But other than that... Not that I know of.
Good, concise video. I’ve never used Total Boat products. I’ve been using Epifanes Gloss and Satin the same way. I have 5 coats gloss and 3 coats satin on 2 42” exterior doors. Both 4 years old, original finish. Haven’t aged at all. I do like the quick drying time of the Total Boat.. 👍
Epifanes has a rapid clear. 2 or 3 coats a day. Build up coats, then finish with gloss. Just a suggestion.
Some great tips in this video!!
Oh my. Your subs have doubled since I watched your last video. Good job
Thanks!
Great looking finish Jon! Thanks for sharing the video with us!👍💖😎JP
Thanks JP!
@@JonPetersArtHome Your very welcome Jon! Happy 4th of July to you and the family🎆🎇😎
Great info, Jon. I'd heard the same thing years ago to do this because of the flatting material in the satin.

Ottimo video come sempre complimenti
Thank you for all of your videos, I’ve found them extremely helpful!! Had to rebuild an outdoor bench seating and back and am using these very Total Boat products that I saw from a previous video of yours. Used Sapele for the bench seat and back…can’t wait to see how it turns out using Yotal Boat Gleam.
That’s awesome! Thanks for the great comment!
Hello my friend, your work is great, thank you very much👍🙏💙
Thanks man
hey jon - good vid. quick question - i built our house, and put in a custom sapele front door that is about 12' tall and maybe 7' wide. was a wife "splurge" item ! The painters put finsih on the door that i knew would not survive the south facing midwestern sun. I was right, it didn't. working on a strip/sand right now, and thining of applying this finish. So, major question is how well this stuff held up. Also, - didn't realize base coats should be gloss, so great tip there, and it looks like you used no stain, just natural wood, which i think turned out great.
Jon, one thing to add is that the Gloss finish has more UV inhibitors than the Satin finish.
Thanks Neil, good point! 👍
Thanks for this video! I’ve been thinking about using this combo on an outdoor table, too. How has it held up over the past year?
تحياتي لكم جميعا من مصر
Hellova table. Thanks for the tips.
Thanks!
How did the danish teak sealer hold up? I’m thinking about using it on my teak patio furniture.
How will this table weather through the seasons? Do you have to store it in winter?
Thank you for the tip how to use the marine varnish?
I have a question off subject. Can you tell me about artist strecher frames? Building frames with keys vs. No keys (solid corners). Thank you for your time.
Hello Jon!
What is the shelf life of quarts Total Boat Gleam in gloss & satin They were bought 6/2022 They were closed and stored in a cool dry place Doing maintainence coats on some cedar shutters
Thanks Jon. Great video. I'm about to varnish a table too. How many quarts did you need to finish your table?
Thanks Darrell
Happuccino Life
Sure is pretty...
Thanks Art!
What did you do for the underside of the table?
A couple years ago... we had an outdoor table given to me...(cuz the glass broke that held the would be umbrella in the center)...well I didn't put glass in...I had some luanne board and I cut some plywood strips to glue on the bottom to strengthen the platform....looked nice and functional. Girls (wife and daughter) painted it and I never sealed it...busy work schedule and money priorities etc..well...let's just say I (and the girls) wasted the time spent on this family project cuz I didn't seal it....
So now wondering what kind of coating could I put on top of the paint to keep the elements from destroying the wood (providing I get some extra funds to restore this again)
I trust your advice. You do good work!
😇😎
Thanks, definitely would have helped
The finish looks swell. Are you going to do your steel wool buff out on it? I really like the contrast of the Red Grandis against the Sapele. Next time you do one of your "shop notes" videos, lI'd be interested to know what you don't like about it.
Thanks Ed, yes probably could have rubbed out the finish with 0000 steel wool. But I’m not treating this top like fine furniture… i’ll probably try to add a coat every year.
Yes I’ll try to post a video about Red Grandis soon.
Hi Mr Peter. I know this is beautiful table and I noticed you use the red grander in the outside of the other wood what is it that you don't like with the red grenade is it hard to work with or does it give you problem. I have some red Grand Day but I haven't used it yet so I just wanted to know what problem that it gives to know if it's something that I can use more often. I am a beginner in woodworking so that's why I'm asking question I appreciate your answer thank you. The table is so well done very beautiful work.
Hi Raymond, I feel that it’s prone to checking and cupping … i’ll make a video in the next few weeks and use some of my projects as examples.
If you're working outside it's going to collect every particle in the air regardless of what time of day you work.
What was the spray can stuff again? Was looking for the name in the notes. Can’t find it. Great video!
Bloxygen. Great stuff 👍
is the gloss clear or is it tinted? EDIT: Amazon answered for me - CLASSIC MARINE VARNISH contains premium tung oil, phenolic resins and UV blockers for a beautiful transparent amber finish.
I didn't see you thin the 1st 2 coats to oak in as a sealed coat?? I see Total Boat is quite thin. Is it oil or water based? Does it self flatten from the roller. Or roller leave lines?
I use Lust and when building coats you don't have to sand in between coats. I'm not sure what the differences are between Gleam and Lust. Also, you have to thin the Lust 5-10% with Total Boat 100 special brush thinner. I have to admit, I don't lust Lust, I Love Lust, best varnish I've ever used. I'm actually leaving a comment about the Eucalyptus Grandis. I live in Hawaii and they planted thousands of acres of it in old sugar fields to use for a paper mill, but the community shot that down, thank God. So now, what to do with these trees. They want to burn them in a biomass generator, but we're trying to shut that down too, since it's worse than coal for CO2. The industry claims the wood is rubbish and not suitable for anything. My research shows that it's good for millwork and flooring, either varnish or paint. So this was a great example of how truly beautiful this wood is. Many of my clients want a lighter wood but they don't like the yellowing of maple after time and of course it's expensive and imported. So here it is, thousands of acres of wood just waiting to be turned into beautiful products and sequestering CO2. It's a win, win, win, everyone happy, except biomass investors. I'm bookmarking your video to show legislators how excellent this wood is, even though you don't like it, many people, including myself, think it's really beautiful. If they want busy grain, they can buy curly koa. Oh, and nice job.
Very Nice work, however you should block sand instead of hand sand as you will not get a nice even flat sand.
The instructions say to thin the first coat of gloss or use wood primer. Totalboat of course says use their product. Is this necessary. Thanks.
Hey Jon! What do you use to take off the residue powder once you sanded the gloss with the 320? Thanks! Erik
Hi Eric, first I’ll vacuum the surface and then use a clean rag to remove the rest… Like an industrial paper towel.
Why gloss first?
Gloss is pure varnish. You can make it satin by very fine sanding to rough up the surface, but it’s tricky to get it all even. Satin finish has small particles in it to make the surface very slightly and consistently rough, so it must be well mixed before use. Only the top surface matters, so only the last one or two coats help make it satin sheen.
So you don’t need satin for early coats. Why is it bad for those? The particles are transparent. If they had precisely the same index of refraction as the cured finish they would be invisible if submerged. But if it’s slightly different, too thick a layer will obscure the grain. In the real world, particles are slightly different, so for the best clarity, use gloss initially.
@@alans1816 thank you
Great explanation. Thanks Alan
What in the world is mohair? And I've wanted to use a foam roller. It's been incredibly annoying applying the finish . I even used a fancy wooster brush and it was still doing stupid white haze
Why not use all six coats as gloss, and then use #0000 steel wool to satinize the end result?
Could do that too👍
Wat grit sand paper did you use
He said 320 I believe
Is this product sold at any retailers?
I’m not sure
Hard to believe Why you don’t use any pad (or backer) behind your sandpaper,.your flat hand just doesn’t get it for making it flat)-“sticky back” Norton paper is where it’s at on a yellow 3M hard block.
