Yes, you can apply a water-based finish over an oil-based finish if the underlying finish is completely dry. You can scuff up the oil-based finish before applying the new finish.

I spent 17 hours carefully sanding off the old varnish and don't want to make any mistakes as I seal it with this halcyon. I thought I had everything I need, but it looks like I need to go into town for some denatured alcohol and some finer-grit sanding blocks. You've saved me from potentially ruining an heirloom.

Excellent info!! I'm well in a restore for my son. 50+ years ago my father built a picnic table and it holes a lot of fond memories for my son. After disassembling I planned each board to the same thickness and width. Then I applied TotalBoat tabletop epoxy. (1) I should have first applied TotalBoat Penetrating Epoxy Sealer epoxy first. Most often I applied three coats, sanding between coats. I was mixing by volume but should have mixed by weight to ensure the proportion were correct. The maximum I could mix and work with was 4 oz. After the epoxy fully cured (7-12 days) I applied the Halcyon Water-Based Marine Varnish with a brush. I'm getting a LOT of brush Mark's. I'm still trying to determine why.

Today I applied my 6th coat to the 2x4s for the seats and tabletop and I applied it much thicker than I normally do, this looks much better but not as good as if it was sprayed. My son wanted me to retain the original design as much as possible thus there is a 9mm (0.36") between each 2x4 on the tabletop and seats. It would have been MUCH easier if I had glued the 2x4s together, e.g. one slab for the table top and one slab for each seat. This has resulted in a LOT of work and expense! BTW how much do you thin when spraying?

I am going to be building a live edge mesquite bar top that will be in a pool side pavilion and your tips on sanding between 2nd and 3rd costs and a 5 day cure time after the final coat is good information. I intend to use Total Boat Penetrating Epoxy Sealer than finish with the Halcyon clear gloss.

Great question. In this application, I wanted to remove all of the oil based from the original application. I probably could have, but I chose to remove all.
I have used the Halcyon gloss on a Oak table top and it was great. Now I would like to make a project in which I use a gel stain to enhance the color of the wood. I think the way to do it would be to prep the wood, gel stain, then wait till the gel stain is totally dry. Then I would proceed with the halcyon as normal. Any ideas you can add to this?

I've been restoring an old sailboat for awhile... I really enjoy total boat there awesome folks!! Trying to decide on the right finish... Without the hassle of traditional varnish... Been looking at marine wood finish!! BTW there a good resource on CZcams you may also enjoy. Andy at (boatworks today) but he hasn't done one on Halcyon... Thanks again, Doug

Doug, I have used Halcyon over stain. As with paint, you need to allow the stain to completely dry before applying Halcyon. Most of my stains are MinWax. You can thin Halcyon by as much as 20% with water. Normally I do not thin mine. I have thinned it once with excellent results. I use the Critter spray gun system.....found on Amazon. There are knock-offs available that are junk.....spend the $49 and buy the Critter brand. I own 2 of them. I add 1/4" ID plastic tubing to the bottom of the aluminum siphon tube.....which allows me to use quart jars rather than pint jars. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Question is it okay to do all this after spraying with a krylon finish?, it’s always been a habit to spray it after so the ink don’t bleed into anything.
As long as the Krylon has completely dried you should not have any issues. I was told by Jamestown Distributors (they make the Halcyon) that I could apply it over water based or oil based finishes as long as the substrate was completely dry.

John, have you ever sprayed the Halcyon? I get a much better finish spaying. You can thin the Halcyon by as much as 20% with water.

I hear nothing about a sealer cote on bare wood, before using Halcyon, wonder if it is necessary.

@@nickel0eye So far so good. Lasting longer than the Helmsman did. I too did not read that anywhere.....they gave me that information on the phone.
