  • Who would you be without your story that you need sugar to get through your day?
Welcome to the Food Junkies Podcast. In this episode, Crissy and Dr Tarman speak with Byron Katie. Byron Katie is best known for her method of self inquiry knows as “The Work” , which is a set of four simple questions designed to challenge destructive thought patterns that often lead to depression, anxiety and even addiction.
After a spiritual epiphany in her early forties, Byron Katie turned her life around, from a mind bogged down with depression and addictive behaviours to one of joy and freedom. She formulated four simple questions in order to help others achieve this same freedom she continues to experience to this day. Her questions are as follows: is it true? Is it absolutely true? How does it feel to believe that thought? Who would you be without that thought?
She is author of a number of books: her first "Loving What is” and others: "A Thousand Names for Joy, Question Your Thinking, Change the World, Who Would you Be Without your Story?, A Mind at Home with Itself: How asking Four Questions can Free your Mind, Open Your Heart and Turn your World Around". Check out her viral video: “Prisoner of the Mind” (over 167 K views) which illustrates her work in action.
In order to help others use this unique approach, Byron Katie created “ the International", an organization that includes the School for the Work and the Turnaround House, situated in Ojai California. Byron Katie has been teaching her approach internationally since the 1990s and is a well known figure in the spiritual and self help realms across the world.
We at Food Junkies Podcast are interested in how these four questions - and Byron Katie's approach in general , can be used as tools to support the treatment of food addictions and in maintaining long term recovery.
    -------------
Her simple yet powerful process of inquiry is called The Work. The Work consists of four questions and the turnarounds, which are a way of experiencing the opposite of what you believe. When you question a thought, you see around it to the choices beyond suffering. Katie has been bringing The Work to millions of people for more than 20 years. Her free public events, weekend workshops, nine-day School for The Work, and 28-day residential Turnaround House have brought freedom to people all over the world.
The Four Questions in The Work Are:
    Is it true?
Can you absolutely know that it's true?
How do you react, what happens, when you believe that thought?
Who would you be without the thought?

I used the Work to quit smoking, spend a weekend questioning every thought that came out trying to get me smoking. It was 8 years ago and still in absence. It became super clear what one puff means. I Read some books on addiction at that time and it says the challenge of relapsing comes at around 6 months, unexpectedly. And that’s what happened, but when it came I questioned that thought saying that one will not mean anything, look how far u came, u got it under control. Unfortunately, sugar is something I was not able to get to that stage, and it still has me in control. I admit it. I think the difference is that sugar is really everywhere, and hidden, so the first bite happens before it is released. It would be great to know where to start, I tried AA but I am not religious and I found it triggering. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Wonderful. It would've been good to have had a few worksheets already filled out and go through the process work BK again ... next time she comes back perhaps
