    Thanks TFL, but as some others have mentioned, this full range forecast may not be accurate based on the displayed 24% of battery capacity. This assumes GM got it really good and linear through the entire battery capacity. Like assuming in a gas powered car that the fuel needle is linear the whole way through from “F” to “E”. Maybe voltage is more linear but I just don’t trust it till I see it ;)

      Yeah..based on 2.1mi per kwh, with a 212 battery you get around 445mi range. Something doesn't seem right here.

      I must be doing something wrong. I keep hearing this about teslas but i usually beat my estimate by 10 or more %. All I do is not have the ac on and drive behind a big rig lol

      Tesla's EPA range isn't based on 100 percent highway driving. It's a mix of mostly highway, with some city and back roads. Which is what my daily drive usually is. If I do the speed limit, I frequently match or exceed the EPA rated range. Even with 100 percent highway driving, you only need to slow down a bit or draft a truck and you'll beat the EPA range. In the city or on back roads you'll easily do more than the EPA range.

      I'm a Tesla owner too. I've heard that and expect lower than the estimates if you're speeding, just like gas auto's. I can only estimate because I don't go from 100% to 0%. You being a Tesla owner understand that. But my estimates are close enough I think. I have a long range and have gone 300 miles and still had some left. Estimates I "thought" were 330. Hard to tell for me. But this Silverado appears to have done very well. I'm considering this Silverado or the Cybertruck. I don't know nearly enough about either of these trucks yet.

      Yes , thank you! and I dont understand how Tesla real life range did not make a lot of news since it is way less than they claim. I have model x longe range plus and i barely get 250 miles full charge. The Mentatory regen baraking is so stupid ! . I did have Bolt evu claiming 249 but was able to make 295 miles with that full 68Kw battery vs 100kw battery of x.

    So far, this truck seems to be the opposite of the Lightning. Instead of skimping on the battery like Ford did, the Silverado has useful range even while towing, as they got over 230 miles even with a 6k+ pound trailer.

      This isn’t a truck though is it? It’s a chopped SUV, if you can’t put truck accessories on it (like a sled deck or camper) that work for every other 1/2 ton truck like a including the lightning then it’s just not a truck.

      Still not what you want to tow with outside of local area. Going to spend a lot of time at a charger every 200 miles or so and still have the annoyance with charging park spots and issues they have with trailers.

      @@JsGarage And I would just about bet that 80-90% of truck owners don't pull trailers, especially campers, and 75% of those that do don't go further than 200 miles away.

    I'm a field engineer for electric car charging stations and I put over 500 miles on my company Ioniq 5 just yesterday (more than 15,000 miles in 2.5 months) . And while the ioniq is not bad range wise, having a vehicle like this would be much more preferable for my work.

      ​@@vxnova1real world range would be running the battery all the way down to 3% so you get that big peak charge to minimize the time spent at DC fast chargers.

      Apparently they take 350kw speed so in theory less than an hour to charge, But depends on charging curve, Which would be interesting to see,

      ​@@cousinjohncarstuff4568 Kyle at out of spec reviews did this very thing with the Hummer EV. I nelieve it took over 3 and 1/2 hours to charge and the bill was over $100 at a similar charger that was used in this video.

    Refreshing after my Tesla EPA to actual highway dissappointment. I still love the car and gold standard charging experience but I appreciate GMs honesty in delivering more than advertised on the Lyrik and now this truck as well.

      Because then we’d know the ugly truth, that it takes 2hr to recharge that corpulent battery on a 150kW (assuming a typical charging curve, yet tbd).

      @@carsonassociates3263 Most EVs are recharged overnight. On a 150 kW, it would probably be 45 minutes to 80% if the pack is near empty. But some of the chargers don't work properly unfortunately. When they switch to Tesla's network, road trips will be much easier.

    Was hoping you would do a loop 150 miles and 150 miles back to see just how much remained of charge for 300 miles.

    12:27 Out in Colorado, you're getting a lot more of the new ChargePoint Express Plus and EVgo 350 kW charging sites, which would be better for your charging tests. Even with Electrify America's 350 kW chargers, many are now split-power, so you might not be seeing the full 500 A that you'd need to max out the Silverado EV's charging speed.

    The fact that you can go 450 to 500 miles on one charge of full speed highway driving on big heavy trucks truly frightens a lot of people out there. And that it charges at over 300kw for so long and is still over 200kw over 70% SoC really blows their minds. Of those that have one, that is.
    A lot of the comments below speak for themselves regarding said fear, or the latter of the above statement.

    Andre used 24% of battery (per the truck), which was 59kWh (again, per the truck). That would equate to a 246kWh pack size!

      Fuzzy math. It’s a simple calc, efficiency (2.1mpk) x battery pack (assumed 212kW) = 445 miles of range.

    You used 55kwh if you multiple x4 you jave 220kwh. Is that accurate? Wasnt supposed to be 212kwh?

    Was there a lot of interior road noise? You can hear bumping or something. Please do the DB testing when you Ike this truck. I wonder if they stripped out the noise insulation to save a few $$$.

    I appreciate this effort to bring real world use to the table.
    As the voltage drops, the current increases.
    25% x 4 is not an accurate method to determine range.
    This method artificially increases the range estimate.
    It uses the optimum portion of the battery.
    One needs to fully charge and then fully discharge to get a true range estimate.
    I don't know if this was intentionally misleading or simply due to lack of knowledge.

    The display showed it used 55.8 kwh of electricity for 128 miles... so those battery is 220kwh at 2.32 miles per kwh... thats the mpg number

      At the price he paid, its actually more expensive to drive this than my v8 Ford Explorer. This trip cost him 24$, would have cost me 5$ less for the same distance.

    Thank you TFL and Andre. The Silverado EV team hit this out of the park. I plan to keep my reservation. The truck is checking all the boxes it advertised over these past 1 1/2 years. The 3WT or the 4WT does have appeal for my needs. The tax credit offsets the purchase price about $10k in my state which will help add to the appeal to these two models.

      What are the real numbers for the tax incentives? Do the tax incentives really turn into money in your pocket? I honestly would like to know from someone that has been through the tax claim and see how it works and see if ends up saving EV customers the claimed amount of tax savings.
      The way the tax regulations are it makes it tough to achieve the full $7,500.00 federal incentive and state incentives are even tougher.

      @@herbwheeler4470We just bought a Mach E GT and because it was built in Mexico we only received $3750. From federal. You do not get cash in hand from your taxes…it’s a tax rebate you get only if you owe taxes. We did get from State of Delaware a rebate of $2,700. Cash off the vehicle. Can’t remember for sure but it was around $2700. 14 years ago from Solar and Geothermal heating I installed in my new house I did receive a $22,000. Tax rebate check. That was nice!

      You only receive the max tax credit of $7500 if the sticker price is $80,000 or less for this particular truck. Then it’s a tax credit not a refund so most won’t see a savings at all with the credits.

    With 12K max towing, is there anyway to install a gooseneck or 5th wheel hitch? I would feel more comfortable with that heavy of a load if I could move the hitch to the center of the bed.

      @@duramaxadventures5832 I know, so far no EV pickups have been released that are capable of hauling fifth wheel or gooseneck trailers. Though it seems each manufacturer tries to outdo the last with the towing capacity of their latest model. At some point, it will be simply ridiculous to try to haul the weights they are touting with a bumper pull hitch. But no one seems to want to take the next step in trailer hitches. Maybe the new RAM will do so when it is released.

    To each its own, some people don’t charge past 80% and some mornings you might not have 80% or more when you leave to do your daily tasks, so this helps either way 🤷🏾‍♂️

    Be careful trusting the range and battery percentage that is being displayed. Instead, use the consumption/capacity metric, I.e., miles per kWh by battery size. There are no good reasons a manufacturer would hide the battery capacity from its customers other than to avoid scrutiny of advertised claims. But we know that the SilveradoEV is based on the same battery platform as the HummerEV, so assuming the battery is the same size as the HummerEV, then the actual range based on your 2 miles per kWh might be closer to 424 miles (212kWh used out of 246kWh). But it could also be increased should GM decide to use more of the bottom and top buffer from the 246kWh pack. I would not buy one of these until GM comes clean with some of this information.

      @@NIAtoolkit Regen contributes, but it's not enough to make a significant difference on a level regular highway driving circuit. Down a mountain? Yes, significant. No matter how you look at it, the 2 mile/kWh is not great, and to get a 500 mi range, he would have needed to average around 2.4 (assuming GM is using the HummerEV pack). The problem is that this truck was supposed to be more efficient; that is what GM promised us, so only getting 2 miles per kWh doesn't make it any more efficient than any other EV pickup on the market, maybe less so. I think perhaps the guess-meter software might be a bit ambitious on these early press vehicles. Legacy manufacturers are known for doing this with their MPG calculations.

      The battery percent is fine using the range number is a no-no. The battery percentage is literally a fuel gauge.

      Because the battery warranty is based on GM's calculation of degradation they will not present the raw data from the battery
      the same way that Ford does not present the gross capacities of the lightning nor does Tesla.

    Thanks for the range test, I see so many people hating on it and don't know why. It's pretty much impossible to do a real range test that is going to be, accurate for everyone's specific driving situations. There's so many variables just like with an ice engine; speed, elevation gains, acceleration and so many other variables contribute to the range on any vehicle. We've probably all seen range reviews on the same ice vehicle that get drastically different results. Take this review for what it's worth it, gives a pretty decent estimate what the real world range could be in this vehicle.
    Based on the numbers he showed of 128 mi in 2 hours and 20 minutes that's about a 58 mph speed average. If you go faster than that you'll probably get worse range if you go slower you might get better range. This range test review gives me a realistic idea of what range someone could get.
    With this vehicle I wouldn't have range anxiety but definitely still have charger anxiety, how long does it take to charge with that big pig battery and where can you charge it on road trips.

      People hate because its being forced. EVs are cool, but ultimately not superior outright. Cost him 20 minutes and 24$ to charge from 60% to 80%. At this rate, the cost of charging a big EV will be more per mile than a small gas car. And producing massive batteries like this definitely isn't saving the environment. So its interesting, but mostly a grief that's being forced. Don't forget, the entire system in the US requires endless growth or everything collapses

    Hey, my favorite automotive podcast friends,
    I keep hearing partial information about the truck bed.
    You have stated the length many times (5' 11"), but never the width nor the vertical dimension of the bed.
    Plus, I can't find anywhere the position of the wheel wells. They look really long and flat.
    Are those dimensions under a non-disclosure agreement for you?
    I have reserved one of these trucks and am thinking of making my own ultralight topper out of carbon fiber. I am roughing out the design.
    I also don't understand how that rear cab spoiler will interact with the topper.
    Can my topper be open to the cab somehow? (Think stealth camping.)
    Please give these measurements if possible.
    I promise that if I come up with something really cool I will drive through Colorado to show you.

    128mi/2:21== approx 55mph. 2.1 at 55 is not good at all. Coming from a Lightning owner, thats no better maybe slightly worse than what I get.

    Important factor here, the claimed charge times will only be accurate if you get maximum voltage. As you see in the beginning, it took 20 minutes and 24$ to charge from 60% to 80%. That's the realistic future of EVs. They'll just scale charging prices to be close to gas prices. All the claimed savings over gas will go out the window, and we'll all have to spend hours a week charging.

    ***** Rented this truck for 9 days and the screen blackout and the AC gave out due to a HIGH VOLTAGE CHARGE which was prompt on the screen. I had no AC on a hot day while it was raining. I was in Texas when this all happened *****
    Save your money until it’s fixed

    For those trying to figure out battery capacity and the math is not mathing, brake regen will take away from consumption because energy is being added back into the battery pack
    I only wish for vehicle manufacturers to display both energy consumed and energy generated separately, instead of bundled into one number like they all do

    Im hauling a travel trailer from San Francisco, Ca, it is close to 9,000lbs and first stop i went 250 miles from 90% down to 17% on the battery, charging rate at the 350kW station is only getting 174kW average rate.

    Great video and information. Still the problem is cost of recharge. About $100 based on what was shown in video and time to recharge. I can still fill a full sized truck with dino juice in 5 minutes or so vs. a several hours for the EV truck. Towing destroys an practicality of EV. That has been proven. EV developers still have not addressed the elephants in the room: Cost, recharge time, etc. Oh, lets not forget the terrible infrastructure or the tanking performeance when conditions aren't optimal, IE: cold winters or hot summers.

    This isn't a real range test. You gotta charge to 100% and drive in a loop until its empty. I guess i got spoiled by Out of Spec and Tom's range tests.

      Why do damage for a range test. A true ev range test is the useable range which should be 80 to 20 percent. To make batteries environmentally sound you need long life. So 80 to 20 it is.

      I disagree. As a 4+year ev owner myself I run 90% until empty (unless I know I need to charge to reach my destination). Fill up a tank of gas with only 80% and tell someone that that is the range of your gas vehicle. Maybe Andre was on a tight schedule and didn't want to wait for that last 20% charge.

      I'd like to also add that the air density around Denver is much less so the wind resistance is much less. Also the climate control in Denver around this time doesn't work very hard either.

      As an out of spec fan my self, Kyle even says that their test while they do their best to account for consistent variables, it does not account for all variables and doesn’t mean no other test is accurate but his. He actually has stated this quite a few times. 😊

    Going off of percentage is not an accurate measurement. What was the average miles/kWh for the full trip? You briefly mentioned it was 2.1, did it finish at a that same rate? With a 213kWh pack using 2.1 m/kWh the total range would be somewhere around 447 miles of range.

In the real world there will be different situations that may or may not affect the range, is it hot out? Cold out? Ac on or heat, windows down, hit a traffic jam. Real world conditions WILL affect the range, I’m curious as to how much. If your happy with the results on paper cool I am not.

    My rough calculations put that charging station cost at about .27 per mile. ($24 for about 90ish miles) I base that on the fact that he increased the battery charge 20% and with a 450mile range battery. That's equivalent to an old gasoline pickup truck getting about 10 mpg with today's gas prices. In Kansas City, gas costs about $2.70 per gallon for 87 octane. Ummm, doesn't make much financial sense to me. I'm not even going to consider at home charging because of the high cost of installing 3 phase electric into the garage that will not charge as fast as one of those fast chargers.

    Would this test be more accurate with more than 1 person in the vehicle? If a family of 3-4 were in this vehicle with moderate luggage, would the available range change a lot? At an 80K price point, I don't think a truck should have too many limitations (I know this naive, yet it is my opinion). At some point the value or price should match the utility.

      It has a battery heater so range at 25F will be similar to range at 105F, about 3% range loss. The packs that don't have this heater suffer far greater range loss. This is with 65F being idea max range temperature.

    If someone is going to tow heavy loads it'll need a big battery / long range. Of course the benefit is that when you aren't towing you get a very nice range. When towing the range will probably drop to 300 miles. I'm sure Chevy is going to offer models with lower range (thus cheaper) to people who don't tow.

      The 3WT has a smaller battery, but the tradeoff is a bigger payload/higher tow rating because of the lower curb weight. For those who tow bigger loads and either have access to fast charging on their route or plan on charging at home every night, the 3WT might be a better buy.

      @@JohnCap523 Range is mostly about the aero. I lose half my range towing my camper, regardless of what's actually in my tow vehicle. The weight is minimal compared to drag, which is why the same vehicle can get 400 miles without towing despite weighing 8,000 lbs.

    Chevy really came through on the Silverado with the 200+kwh pack. Ford messed up badly with the 100-130mile tow range. This beast gets 200-240miles towing a real load.

      You don't charge from 10 to 100% on DC fast charge
      You charge from whatever you get there with (ideally 3 to 5%) to 80% and then move on to the next charger on a trip.

    When the battery is 100% full it will drop faster to 75% than 81% to 57%… so a full battery driving regular you will get like 400 miles on the battery

    Good preliminary test but come on you need to suck it up and go till its empty. This is just an estimate. I'm sure others will do a better job soon. That is just a huge battery pack btw. You would be pressed to fill it up fully from a home charger likely needing 12 hours or so if it was nearly empty but more doable if you didn't run it all the way down. Keep that in mind when installing your home charger and run the max circuit breaker allowed.

    The $0.48 kwh charge rate shouldn't be ignored. My local Tesla Super charger has a variable time of day charging rate from $0.14 to $0.34 kwh. Much cheaper to own in my local area than the charger shown in this video. I would highly advise people factor the cost of charging in your local markets.
    While I own a Tesla I'm not a Tesla fan boy. Just thought I'd add something to the conversation.

      In 15 states Tesla charges by the minute just like the other charge point operators in those 15 states. BTW EA started in Mid Aug variable time of day charging rates in those states that allow charging by the KWh

      I’ve noticed public chargers try to inflate the cost of electricity to 3 to 4x the residential rate, much less the bulk contract rate the company buys at and it’s to be on par with gasoline. I get my electricity for $0.14/kwh after all taxes and fees so I just charge at home. Rarely do I ever use a paid charger.

    Unless the charging station isn't designed to share the power, it doesn't matter if there are other cars charging or not. You get the full speed possible, which is always set by the car. Multiple parameters come into play. Ambient temperature, battery temperature, battery health, state of charge. So you don't always get the maximum charging power at any given point.

      Most are designed to where you cannot all pull maximum power from the charger at the same time. Similar to Tesla supercharger v2s if two people plug in on the same power cabinet they each get half the rate.

    Can we get some winter testing on these EV trucks? I live in a state that has 4 seasons and I don’t own a garage. I’d like to see the difference in range and charging in below freezing temps. And then I’d like to know how the affects of heat and extreme cold affect the battery life and capacity over a long period of time.

      EV owner here, expect 30% range loss in winter. Tons of more indepth videos on heat and extreme cold. Long story short, unless your EV doesn't have active cooling/heating, it will still outlast your desire to keep the vehicle after 10 years.

      Kyle at out of spec reviews will probably be doing that very same thing.
      He did a pretty in-depth video on his rivian pickup. It went from 2.2mi per kWh down to 0.85 miles per kWh in Colorado last winter.
      His truck was not towing anything.
      You did a real world test to see what the truck would do when it's pretty cold out.
      And it's his favorite EV.

Glad you didn’t make the mistake of thinking that the energy delivered by the EA station was the total energy you used (there are intrinsic loses in DC charging to cool the cable, station, etc- that energy does not go into the battery pack)

    While it's good to know the range especially if you're in the market for an EV. I really want to know the cost per mile in real world numbers. See how it compares to driving a comparable work truck powered by gasoline. If you want converts from gas to EV, that's where the comparison should be.

So this truck range equates to a standard 2024 Silverado 1500 with a 24 gal fuel tank. Andre test had 128.5 miles with 55KW used would cost about $6.05 to charge at home at $ .11 KWh billing rate. For a light duty truck that is pretty good saving. If your use case is a HD gas Silverado 2500 this truck does not compete with that.

      This is basically a worst case scenario.
      Using the EA membership would've saved 25%, although you'd have to use EA a fair amount to justify having one of those in the first place. For most uses you'd be able to charge it at home and save a lot of money.
      Probably the biggest advantage that the huge battery provides, is that even if you had to drive a few hundred miles, and power some tools, you could STILL possibly make it home without DC fast charging. For example Andre could likely have driven that loop 2 more times and still made it home. That's where significant money could be saved. Would it ever be enough to make up for the higher initial cost? Depends on how someone intends to use it.
