I wrote this introduction to Ren as well as some background information when I first discovered him earlier this year, as there wasn't a Wikipedia entry for people to look him up prior to March 2023. I have posted this info to every "Hi Ren" reaction I have come across since, and I hope it will be of some use to the uninitiated.
Ren is a Welsh independent artist/singer/songwriter/busker/producer, living in Brighton, UK. He plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, melodica, drums, cello), has impressive vocals, beatboxes, produces all his own beats, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern-day bard; he once jokingly called his music "bardcore" and it stuck.
Ren's music videos are frequently recorded live using a lavalier mic, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. In the case of "Hi Ren," it took four takes, all live in the room, to get the footage he wanted. Someone commented that Samuel Perry-Falvey who filmed "Hi Ren," talks about the production of the video in the comments of Jonathan Hiller's (Filmmaker Reacts) reaction to the song. According to him, this video footage is not a one-take per se, but the audio was recorded live in a single take. Ren's release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren" and appears to have been filmed in the same room.
"Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered over 18 million views since its debut. Ren recently released a video of an older live stage performance of “Hi Ren;” it is worth checking out. However, Ren has been creating great music for more than ten years. Many of Ren's songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day.
Ren's earliest recordings on CZcams are from his time in a band called "Trick The Fox," consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren's onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is "The Mash Up."
Ren's trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master's class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal.
Ren's Hip Hop/Rap style songs are worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; unfortunately, sexual innuendos are pervasive in hip-hop and rap, and Ren makes such references in several of his songs. Check out "The Hunger," "Genesis," "What You Want," "Losing It (FISHER rap retake)," "Right Here, Right Now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake)," "Life is Funny," "Love Music (Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4)," "Crucify Your Culture," "Power," "Hold On," his recent release, “Down On The Beat (feat. Viktus),” and his latest song, “Masochist,” just to name a few.
Ren's collaborations with Chinchilla ("Chalk Outlines," "How to Be Me," "Sexual Healing," "One Dance/Drunk in Love") are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," "Diazepam," "Penitence," "Dear God," "Heretic," "Dominos," his "Freckled Angels" album, in particular his song "Fire," just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren is about to shoot "Money Game Part III."
Ren's performances with Sam Tompkins ("Blind Eyed," "Earned It /Mans World / Falling," "Walking on the Moon/No Diggity," "Feeling Good/Trouble So High/Masterblaster (Jammin')," "Latch," "Wild Thoughts/Crazy in love (Live Session)," "Same Old Situation (Live, feat. Ren)," "Improvising Around Stevie Wonder," "Live in the Streets of Brighton, UK," "What Went Wrong" Part I&II) are definitely a must. Also, his collaborations with Eden Nash ("Humble," "Ocean"), Bibi ("Crutch," "Ahiahiaoha"), Molly McKinna ("Penitence"), Orlean ("Jessica"), his former bandmate Romain Axisa ("French Song"), are all great. Last but not least, Ren's busking sessions with Liv Sangster are awesome. I recently discovered that Ren also recorded a cover of "Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover)," which is simply beautiful.
"The Big Push" (Ren Gill, Gorran Kendall, Romain Axisa, and Glen Chambers) busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are amazing and well worth checking out. All but the drummer sing lead vocals at times. Ren, Gorran, and Romain all play multiple instruments. Ren plays acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, and drums. Gorran plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, and harmonica. Romain plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, ukulele, and piano. They are each incredibly gifted artists, and their solo work is completely different from each other. Well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble So Hard," "War Pigs," "Roadhouse Blues," "My Generation," "Paint It Black," "An Englishman in New York," "Bongo Bong" are excellent. On "These Boots Are Made For Walking'/Satisfaction/Everybody," "Praise You" (Fatboy Slim Cover), and "What Kind Of Woman Is This," all three take a turn singing. The songs "Oh My Woman," "Swan Song," "Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Dignity," "Watch Out," and so many others are equally impressive.
The band, at least for the time being, performed their last official busking session and gave their last concert in September of last year (2022) due to the fact that Ren was leaving for Canada to undergo specialized medical care and surgeries for his multiple health issues.
In anticipation of his stay in Canada, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released during the time he expects to be gone. He released "Sick Boi," "Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake)," which is another masterful work, "Illest Of Our Time," and "Animal Flow," which is out now in two versions, a full-production music video, and a live, one-take acoustic version. Ren also premiered the official music video of his song “Murderer,” and followed it up with a newly recorded acoustic live version that is phenomenal and my favorite of the two versions. His releases, “Love Music Part 4” and “Masochist” recently came out, and his newest release, “Lost All Faith,” just premiered. Ren’s “Money Game Part 3” will be released soon, and his new album is due out on October 13th, if I am not mistaken.
Ren's release, "Su!cIde," was difficult to watch; it is a sad, haunting, gut-wrenching tribute to Ren's friend Joe who took his own life. Ren’s follow-up to “Su!cIde,” "For Joe," is also sad and emotional, but strangely enough, it offers a sense of closure.

Ren has a song/video called "Dear God" that for me lets you know where he's at. Ren is a thinker and questioner. I wouldn't say he puts out a Christian message but he keeps it 100% real. There are hard truths in his music. He hits things from different sides. Unpredictable and clearly talented, unafraid of peoples perceptions. Great Reaction, Guys! From a 55 yr old Christian man in Texas.

I searched his lyrics to find his faith, and even though one of his latest songs, "Lost all faith" States doubting God regarding his horrible health situation, I read between the lines that he believes in God, but struggles to accept God's plan. Like pretty much all of us.

Please don't categorise us all in the same God boat.
I don't believe in any God and never have and I'm not alone.
Also, why do you presume you know God's plan, isn't God supposed to be beyond our understanding? And yet you presume to know it's plan....
Ok that said, I liked your reaction and I get it, this song is deep on so many levels amd has helped many people out included myself though I see no religious message, just metaphors using well known religious symbolism to make a point but each to their own I guess.
Hope to see you guys react to more Ren but please dont hold off on your opinion of him based on his religious view point because that is discriminatory and lazy and shows a lack of acceptance of others beliefs or ideas. Be better than that as that view point is what devides people and Ren is all for bringing people together. Wether it's Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Satanists, pagans or atheists. In the end we are all brothers and sisters and just doing our best to survive in a tough world.

You may find some of Ren’s art difficult to listen to or reconcile with your values. However if seeking truth is your bag, Ren has that in spades. Sometimes it’s his own personal truths, sometimes it’s great universal truths and sometimes it’s a fleeting truth - something he felt at one time and place (like a diary entry). His work is beautiful and painful and astounding.

One thing I didn't hear you mention (being a sound engineer for 15 years), this was a LIVE performance in one take. Yes, he had 3 or 4 cameras, and therefor he spliced in different angles, but it was done live (it took 4 takes for him to get the performance he wanted). Ren is unlike ANY other performer out there right now. He's a Musician, a Songwriter, a poet, a storyteller, an actor, a producer (he creates ALL of his own beats/music).....an ARTIST.
Ren got very sick over a decade ago, at age 18(ish). He had just signed a contract with a label and was cutting an album. He literally had to walk away from that contract, as he was so sick he wouldn't be able to go on tour to support the album. He ended up going to doctors all over Europe (Ren is from Wales but lives in Brighton, England). All the doctors diagnosed him with Chronic Fatigue syndrome and told him all the pain he was feeling was all in his head. With this mis-diagnosis, they put him on a bunch of psycho-active drugs (it was all in his head). Meanwhile, he was staying in his room 23+ hours a day because of the pain (Lyme disease attacks the joints and connective tissues).
He finally found a Doctor in Belgium that gave him his correct diagnosis.......Lyme Disease. He had an answer. But, because it had be mis-diagnosed for so long and gone untreated, it had done it's damage, up to and including "brain damage". He is currently living in Canada, to get treatment to try and repair some of that damage. He is improving day by day, but it's a long road (he's been there for over 6 months and who knows how long it's going to continue).
Ren was also part of a band, "The Big Push" while he was living in Brighton, they have a youtube channel as well. There's really Nothing that Ren can't do. He's one of those "Once in a lifetime Artists" that change the world. Welcome to the Ren Rabbit Hole, enjoy your stay.

What I take from this after listening to it literally a hundred times, is that it’s not that we are good or evil or more accurately taken over by either, but that we are sandwiched in between good and evil and are capable of both, but we as human beings have free will, a hand on the steering wheel driving a thin line between good and evil and we chart our own destiny. He's so versatile as an artist because he doesn't conform to one style or genre. He just lives through music, so he makes whatever kind of music he wants to make at the time. His rap album is about to drop, but he's said that his next album is going to be more focused on singing. He's done some awesome vocal colabs with Chinchilla. I love "How to Be Me" which talks about about how he has, and is still dealing with the loss of a friend who took his own life years ago. I don't know where he stands on God, but as most in life, we question our faith when tragedy hits us. "Why did God let this happen to me?" I see a lot of that in his songs. Considering his health struggles, it's easy to see that that struggle could be still going on today. At one point in his life, he spent a year in bed because his body and bones were causing so much pain and the doctors didn't know what was going on. He told his mom, during that time, that he didn't think he could do another year with the pain, but he never gave up. He's done a few interviews that are very interesting, specifically the one with Rosalie. He talks about his physical and mental health struggles. He and his music are definitely worth a deep dive. His story is inspiring.

Ren has Lymesdisease and was misdiagnosed and given the wrong treatment and it was the music that got him through the dark times. He writes and produces his own beats. Ren generally tales a lot about mental health in his songs. I think you should do dear god, Genesis, Money game part 1 & 2 but if you like his storytelling, you must do the trilogy the tale of Jenny and Screech with violets tale, it has a twist in the story that will blow you away. Much love, not sure if you have done any Dax's but he does some great stuff a lot of it with a Christian message behind it too.

    jAN 01, 2023
    rEN~
Up until I was 9 years old, I would intermittently hear a voice in my head that was not my own. The voice was distinctly different to mine, and always negative. It would self criticise or urge me to do things I knew to be morally wrong. The most peculiar thing about the voice was that it took no effort on my behalf to produce. My own thoughts always felt like there was a process that required effort to bring them to the forefront of my mind, this voice appeared as though it was spoken by another. The sentences felt predetermined like they had already been constructed.
I remember very vividly at 9 years old, becoming very frustrated with the voice. I stood in my back yard, internally screaming at the voice to be silent again and again, and it did. In a flash there was silence, to the point where my head felt like an empty room. I wasn't used to the quiet and that voice never returned. It almost felt lonely in my head.
When I got older I had intermittent bouts with auditory hallucinations where I would hear perfect symphonies, usually at night when drifting off to sleep. They were so clear that they sounded like they were emanating from a radio in the corner of my room. I knew they weren't there, but for some reason they never came with the feeling of fear. I also recall sitting on a bus at the age of 15, and hearing the sound of a crowded room, with about 100 voices chattering away, I was the only person apart from the driver on the bus.
These experiences were always very brief, and few and far between.
My last hallucination was during an intense bout of psychosis in 2015, and was my first visual hallucination. I was walking down a pavement after jumping out my mums car in a crossroads in a moment of frustration and distress with my condition. I was trying to run from myself. What appeared to be a homeless man with a dark complexion approached me, and asked me what was wrong. I explained that I had been sick most my life, and I wasn't sure I had the strength to continue. He looked at me, and smiled and told me 'everything is going to be okay in the end Ren.' I had not told him my name. There was something so overpoweringly sincere about this very simple message, which brought with it an overwhelming feeling of inner peace, and in a flash, he vanished.
My rational brain always linked these experiences to what the doctors have told me, that there are parts of my brain compromised by the autoimmunity in my body. That the myelin sheaths surrounding the complex electrical system that conduct my thoughts were damaged and compromised, causing these lucid experiences that I knew did not exist inside the physical world.
The part of me that edges away from logical and rational thought always attributed these thoughts to some kind of otherworldly intervention, that made my thoughts the battleground of some spiritual tug of war.
For a long time I never really acknowledged this part of myself, for with it brought the danger and stigma of sounding like a crazy person.
I decided with my latest release, to the best of my ability, to capture and express this chess match of thought.
Hi Ren comes out in just over 24 hours.
I can't wait for you all to hear it.

My favorite part of this is that at no time does Ren hint to the darkness controlling him or speaking THROUGH him, for him. BUT, in his last verse, he goes from speaking as himself to defining the titles and attribute of Christ as Christ in him speaks FOR him against the devil. Then, he sets down his guitar and is still. He softly speaks the knowledge of those spiritual battles.
    Love this man. Amazing artist.

I appreciate your insight, and thanks to all those who commented below on Ren's personal bio....here is a recap : at 17 Ren contracted Lyme disease and an autoimmune deficiency-------was misdiagnosed as bi-polar--------prescribed psychotropic meds that wrecked his physical and mental health-------he may be in treatment for the rest of his life. I believe the pig is a butcher and represents Ren's opinion of many doctors & therapists who don't take the time to fully understand their patients' conditions.......the discordant guitar & vocals are intentional, expressing his internal chaos, as do the blinking lights........."Truth in a blender, deceitful Pretender....."

As others have said , Ren contracted Lyme disease and then went through almost a decade being misdiagnosed. His song "Sick boi" is a continuation of themes found in "Hi Ren" and how he feels the medical system and society need to change how they operate. Believe it or not, this video isn't the most theatrical one. That would be "The tale of Jenny and screech (Full version)" with many fans and reactors calling it Shakespearian in scope. Since you are both Christians, it would be nice to see.your reaction to his song "Dear God". A lot of his stuff is very autobiographical, yet relatable, and deals with the topic of mental illness and heavy topics such as suicide etc. However, he also has very uplifting positive music. It's funny you should make mention of being "Humble" as that is one of my favorite Ren songs. I also highly recommend you check out his live collaborations with Chinchilla ("Chalk outlines " and "How to be me").

That was far far beyond art guys. I hope you don't feel it threatened your own beliefs . If I may: language is just noises, and like the rest of this video it defies judgement. As Christians, you should well know that you can't/shouldn't judge this. Judgement is a terrible human habit, we shouldn't be judging anything, we don't have to pigeon hole things in a poor attempt to categorise or understand it. This guy, REN did an incredible thing, he literally bared his soul for us, and gave us his own message, and I for one back every word of this 100%. Don't fear liking it or promoting it because you yourselves fear judgement. Share the conversation you had after you turned the camera off.
I would humbly suggest that the reason you didn't speak on it, the reason you say "I'd like to hear more" is your own serpent, your own psyche telling you that if you respond immediately and with complete honesty you may yourselves be judged by your community or your perception of your God. THAT's the voice this guy illuminates for us.
This was a conversation between God and the Devil if you like, it was a story of the only and eternal struggle we face. And to succeed, to proceed we listen not to the the bastardised and edited words of men hundreds of years after the fact, we listen to our own real truth, in that, and only in that, we truly find our saviour.
Luke 17:21 (King James Version), states it clearly: “Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” Within. ALL 'major' religions make this observation, and it's the only and true underlying message. Glad you enjoyed, do t be afraid to take this and anything else on board and learn from it. There is no judgement.

Language is not a problem to me; I'm almost 68 years old and have learned to discern the emotion, the pain, the joy expressed through compressed language -- like coarse words. I grew up in an era where we elaborated on our ideas, using a lot of proper and polite language. These days, the naughty words of the past are becoming assimilated into everyday language -- they are losing their shock value. Bad language for me is that which fails to make its point, judges as the default response, and apologizes for personal imperfections rather than praising His work in us through the blood of the Lamb. Strong and offensive language is the soul's response to lack of more precise tools by which we may express what our mind is shouting. OUR conversation is what we judge, and we all have the power to click away if we are offended -- and thank goodness most of us really are still offended by the ill-fitting language slung about without thought or consequence. Thank you for shielding your audience and giving us the choice to listen to or mute your content. Good of you and appreciated.

Just a head's up, most of his songs have swearing and there are no edited ones available. I love Ren and his transparency with the real struggles we have in life...illness, death, greed, pain, our looks, and our beliefs. I believe he has said several times that he does not hold a specific belief and would have to have God answer some questions before he could fully believe. He has a few songs that are just silly and fun, but most hold a powerful message. He has allowed his pain and suffering to turn him into a beautiful human.

  • @Levi_Amongst_the_Watchers

I hope I can say this in a way that isn't misunderstood. Being spiritual is good, it's great, it's essential for living a life that nourishes the soul. But religion can be dangerous. It can blind, twist and corrupt the best of us. It would take a book typed out here for me to explain myself so I'm not going to even try. Just know that I'm not saying don't join a religion if that's your calling, I'm just saying don't let the pitfalls of religion (that have been brought about by the flaws of humans) don't let those flaws blind you then misguide you into being prejudice against wonderful things and wonderful people just because it doesn't fit into the definition of that religion. Stay open minded and accepting of everything and make your own educated decisions on things. The more blatantly forbidden by religion something is, the more you should really take a look at and question why is it considered wrong. Is it because whatever it is, is genuinely wrong (like killing) or is it more questionable of rule (like you gotta give money to the church) or (don't listen to this and that kind of music because it's "evil").
