  • WEST LINDSEY PARISH #99: BROOKENBY
Welcome to Brookenby on the Lincolnshire Wolds which sits around a mile away from the village of Binbrook, over the border and into East Lindsey. Brookenby and Binbrook may have similar names, but as villages, they couldn’t be more different. Binbrook is arguably much more historic, because Brookenby hasn’t been around for all that long. It was never built to be an actual village.
Rather, it was constructed as RAF married quarters, similar to the ones at Scampton and Hemswell Cliff. The RAF base it was built for was RAF Binbrook which was operational between 1940 and 1992. The base was associated with the Royal Australian Air Force as well as our very own air force. RAF Binbrook is also famous for the English Electric Lightnings, providing a home for the last two RAF Lightning squadrons - 5 and 11.
Brookenby became a village when the base closed, and it acquired its name in the 1980s. RAF Binbrook falls within the parish boundaries, and as such, a lot of Brookenby’s buildings were originally used by the air force. These include the Sergeants Mess which has been converted into a whole host of things - including the village’s church! There are plenty of abandoned buildings around the place too, one of which we’ll get a look at on this walk. There’s so much history in this place and it’s pretty unique too.
So let’s get walking and see what Brookenby can tell us about life in RAF on the Lincolnshire Wolds!

A supplement to your Binbrook episode. You drove in past one of my former residences. During my first 12 years in the Airforce I lived in both H blocks, and later in married quarters, on Windsmoor Road, Javelin Avenue, and Cumberland Terrace. The wind was an ever present. It is a very exposed site on the hill there. I had over 7 years at the place in 2 tours, and the memories are still quite vivid. Especially the orderly duties in the guard room, and the approach to the main gate, and the constant noise of aircraft. Lightnings were very loud. Some of my story was lived here, and in Binbrook. As well as the local trips out to shop in Louth, Grimsby and Lincoln, and visits. Walking down the hill to the Marquis of Granby for a pint or three. All a very long time ago now. Keep up the good work though. But mostly be well.
