  • EAST LINDSEY PARISH #6: BINBROOK
Welcome to Binbrook, one of the prettiest of all the Lincolnshire Wolds villages. Its situated on the B1203, eight miles away from Market Rasen. Binbrook is the village associated with the RAF base of the same name, which is within the West Lindsey parish of Brookenby. As we learned in that Brookenby episode, between the two villages is the lost medieval village of Orford - once the site of a priory.
Of course, it is a village which is dominated by RAF history, as you might expect. There are several buildings in the village which were used by the RAF, or had some other kind of connection. There’s a squadron memorial too on Kirmond Road, and if you know where to go, you can even find yourself standing in front of a genuine piece of RAF hardware. Stick with me on that one.
Binbrook shares its name with a town in Ontario, Canada. It used to be a market town at one time and was once much bigger. Its standout feature is arguably its church, which was built to replace two former buildings. Towering over everything, it even has a nickname! To go with that, there are a host of listed buildings, including two historic pumps, an 18th century Manor House and a former pub which is even older.
And Binbrook was the birthplace of the traditional singer Joseph Taylor, one of the Lincolnshire singers recorded by Percy Grainger. Lets see how many people are singing its praises as we make our way around!

I loved how accommodating the guy was about it, considering I'd basically interupted his day with no warning!

Thanks for this trip down memory lane. I had two tours on the Lightnings at RAF Binbrook during my military years, and as an aircraft engineer worked on the very aircraft you featured here (as did many others of course). I was posted away a short while before the Lightning was finally withdrawn from service, with my last days there being on 11 Squadron. I enjoyed many a pint in both of the pubs, and it truly looks unchanged beyond the closing of the Marquis of Granby. It's still a beautiful place, and I enjoyed my time there. So many years ago now. Good luck with the channel, and once again my thanks for the walk down memory lane. Be well.
