  • Hello everyone
So this epic song is really fun to play. It has some interesting chords that sounds a bit odd but works beautifully. Very Beatles-esque.
How do you guys play the very FIRST chord of the song? I've heard and seen people play a regular C-chord. But what I can hear it's more of a Em7/G (3x2003). It sounds right to me.
Let me know if theres any question or if there is other Elliott Smith song you wanna hear.
    Have a nice day!
    /Pontus

His chord choices and progressions were unmatched, weren't they?

True but I think it’s his incredible voice leading that makes his progressions really tick. Most songwriter would use simple shapes, but Elliott would sometimes use three or four different shapes for just one chord throughout a song, what a master

This has to be the record for the most unique open chords in one song. Sheesh, Elliott was really something.

absolutely flawless (Btw, i've seen a lot of people doing a C/G or a normal C for the first chord of the song, this is the first time i've seen someone doing an Em7/G as the first chord and it sounds amazing!)

Cmaj7 should work also! Elliott sings a B in the beginning, so it will be alright. Thank you very much for watching!

Just so everyone is aware because it took me a sec, the chord played around 00:35 is a d# diminished xx1212 The video continues to say D but there is a switch there after two strums. Great video though! Can’t wait to cover this :-)

@@musicswede1 No problem at all! I love the chords you use here especially in the beginning, the Em7/G is a beautiful pick as well as the A7/G and the A7/C#. Currently recording a cover now :-)

Even though Elliott sings B over the opening chord, I hear it played (3x2013) listen closely for the C note on string 2 to move up to C# when switching to the A7/C#. Great play though overall. Just about nailed it.

Very commendable rendition!! I wonder if there’s an Elliott chord database? I love that Em7/G and especially Am7/c#

Oh no! I played a Cmaj7/G as the first chord in my cover. It sounds okay but I wish you'd made this video sooner.
