  • Today I decided to review the chin sprint - despite a few downsides like price and weight I overall feel like this is a great wheel and perfect for my rats.

    It is fun watching my ratties run on their wheels. I have two of my cages in my room so sometimes i fall asleep listening to them run lol.
    Thank you for this review. That looks like a nice sturdy wheel but out of my price range. I use the silent spinner wheels and those work well but now that i see this review i may save and get one for one of my cages.
    I am always in search of new things and ideas for my rattie cages and you have helped me quite a bit. I truly thank you for that.

    I’ve had two Chin Spins (the ones made from the same material as the critter nation cage with the wooden back) for nearly eight years in my chinchilla’s critter nation cage. He only uses one so I’m moving the other to our soon-to-be rat cage. It’s an excellent wheel and both still run smooth and quiet. It’s totally worth the money for many, many years of use. The bearings can be replaced too if need be.

    My twins run together in their kaytee wheel all the time. In fact they do a lot of things together. If Natasha tries something, pepper follows her and tries too. And i mean everything. They only differ with food. Natasha is like me, try anything once. Pepper is like my son extremely picky.
    We took pepper to the vet because her left forearm is bald. She or her twin have been over grooming (barbering). The vet gave us an anti-inflammatory for her. She said most rats like the flavour because its a little sweet. Not my pepper. She went on the lamb to get away from it. Natasha licked up the drips off of her, me, the cage and tried to steal the syringe for more. 😒.

    Great review! I’d also suggest Pet Revolution (petrevolution.us/products/12-silver-wheel ), a family-owned business that makes great aluminum wheels in 12”, 14” and 16” sizes starting at $66 for the smallest. I got a 14” aluminum wheel with a 4” wide running surface shipped from Kentucky to San Diego for $96.99 ($15 was the shipping, wheel was $81.99). It is lightweight and incredibly silent, and multiple ratties can run in it at the same time. I did put Dr. Scholl’s Moleskin on the running surface to make the wheel “grippy” because they weren’t comfortable with a slick surface, and they use the wheel constantly. The owners of Pet Revolution make products to order, and they are really good about communicating with clients about the products. Just wanted to put that option out there!

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I actually have a video where I do just that! That being said there are advantages this wheel has over the oil pan wheels - a big one is that it’s much wider which encourages larger rats to use it (plus my girls can use it in pairs which is nice). It’s also a smooth surface which mine seem to prefer. And this wheel is also much quieter than a lazy Susan wheel is (you can modify it by adding an extra backing piece for stability and noise reduction, but it still makes a bit of noise compared to this one).
      Overall I think making your own wheel is great and I’m glad I did so, but I do prefer this wheel slightly due to the above (my main issue with it is it’s a bit pricey, but since I haven’t had to do any maintenance on it even with years of use and dozens of rats using it I think it’s worth it).

    • @staticwombat
      @staticwombat Před 4 lety +1

      Rats don't really do wet food as standard, they're very messy. There's a lot of contention within the rat community over diets, but lab blocks are generally a safe bet. I'm in the UK and use Science Select, but it's not as good as it used to be since they stopped doing just rat food and made it rat & mouse food, so it's not as well focused. You can otherwise feed them just about anything, provided you give them a good balance. Isamu Rats has a great and very informative website: www.isamurats.co.uk/feeding-and-nutrition.html

    • @rat-tastic422

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes I’ve used the saucer wheels (both 12 inch and 14 inch) but out of 24 rats that I’ve given these wheel only one has used it and she was introduced to it at 4 weeks old - her sisters also learned to use it as babies but as soon as I gave a normal wheel they switched and never looked back (Biscuit continued to use both wheel types for her entire life so I suppose some rats like them but in my experience most prefer the up and down wheels)

  • @PeterRubalcava

    Hey! Do you recommend the tread mills that they have? They're half the price and the reviews look good but it looks like you don't have them so I'm not sure. If not I'll definitely get this one.

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  Před 4 lety +1

      By treadmill wheels do you mean the sideways saucer ones? If so then I haven't had much luck with them - I've used the exotic nutrient 14 inch ones and a plastic 12 inch one with rats before and neither got used much. In fact out of 25 rats only 3 that i introduced at 4 weeks to the treadmill and didn't give them another option used it, and when I added a normal wheel 2 weeks later 2 babies switched over right away and while the third baby still used it on occasion even she tended to use the upright wheel more. Now that she's passed none of my rats use those types of wheels and so I only have the normal wheels in their cage.
      I think a lot of rats find the whole running sideways thing a bit weird and so most would prefer to run straight like they can on the normal wheels. In any case I'd say your best bet at your rats using a wheel is to go for an appropriate sized normal style one. You can find a few cheaper large ones on etsy (I can definitely understand steering away from this one since its quite pricey), so that is also an option. As for this wheel its continued to hold up well, and my rats still use it all the time so I'm hoping it will last for a good decade and be a good investment overall.

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  Před 4 lety +2

      How long have you left the wheel in the cage? And how large are your rats?
      Often I find you need to leave the wheel in the cage for a few weeks before they start to use it, and if you have adult rats (especially males or large females) then they really need a 14-16 inch wheel. I’ve talked to people who haven’t had any luck with a 12 inch wheel, but once they put in a 15-16 inch wheel saw there rats use it. I’d guess with larger rats a small wheel might just be too uncomfortable and not worth it for them to use.
      Otherwise you can try luring them into walking on it with a treat, just to teach them the motions, but even then you’ll have to leave it up to them to learn to like to use it on their own.

    • @ShadowTheRat
      @ShadowTheRat  Před 7 měsíci +1

      How long has she had the new wheel? If its less then a month then you really just need to leave it and let her adjust at her own pace. Rats are naturally neophobic animals and its normal for them to take weeks to adjust to something new - don't put her in it as that will just make her more scared of it, she needs to adjust at her own pace and investigate it on her own time.
      Most of my rats have taken 2-3 weeks to adjust to new wheels, especially if they've never had a metal wheel before, but after that they love it and use it all the time!

    Please do NOT use wheels for rats. Even that big one is not big enough for rats. They still need to hold up their tail when they run in it which can result in deformity of the tail and in long term lead to problems with their balance. A wheel would need to be big enough for the whole rat to run in it with their tail all straight for it to be fine to use it for rats.

    • @bookterror
      @bookterror Před 4 lety +3

      Rats run with their tail held up whether it's on solid ground or something else,so that's not a problem. Yes, it is important that the wheel has a wide enough diameter so they can run comfortably since the verterbraes in the spine limit its overall curvature, but their tail is flexible enough that it doesn't cause health problem if it is curled or held in usual positions for a time.
      Wheel tail (which I guess is what you are referring to) can happen in rats due to genetics and environmental factors but it's not linked to the actual running wheel. Rats without access to wheels have also developed this phenotype.

      @@KadSel I don’t have any anatomical sources (I learned most of from in german biology textbooks) but any general pet book will tell you the same.
      There is a video by Shadow the Rat (czcams.com/video/F27fCIla6vo/video.html) that shows one of her girls running right at the beginning. You can clearly see her spine bunch and relax without it overstretching. The tail is not that limited in its position and used for counterbalance (which is why it can even curl around objects to help weight distribution)
      As for the wheely tail, there is one post here (www.myratfriends.com/single-post/2016/02/18/The-Truth-About-Rat-Wheels) that explains it pretty well. There is also a breeder of such curved tails here (tinyfeetrodentry.webs.com/differentdoodletails.htm) so it’s clearly a gene that can be passed on.
      Wheel running is nowadays used in plenty of studies to measure “happiness” in rats. Even rats and mice in the wild run on wheels if they are placed near them. Here is one study (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5236037/) which shows that rats who are in pain will not use a wheel. [You have to take those studies with a grain of salt, since lab rats are not fancy rats and you don’t know for sure how enriched their environment is otherwise, but there are enough similarities to compare them.]
      There are plenty more studies.
      Isamu Rat Care has also done a very good vide on wheels and explains things even better than I do: czcams.com/video/ct6_nT6mKAQ/video.html
      I have personally never come across issues concerning balance when it comes to wheels.
