  • This was a small portion of a video I made for my penpal to update her all on things family related, and showed her some sights from the city. It has turned into a little time capsule, apologies for my monotone commentary!

    Brilliant video. I stayed in Holland Street just top of the town before you get to Charing Cross. I was 22 years old and would often cross Bell's Bridge over the clyde to my then Girlfriends house in Broomloan Court Ibrox. Loved staying in the toon and hated life with the now EX. This video reminded me of just how much I loved not being broke and alone. Made many friends who were both genuine and like me had the inspiration to better myself - eventually I got there despite it taking nearly 20 years but I got there. 😅😂😅 Still ma,e a point though of visiting hame especially the toon and the places you showed here. Truly a brilliant wee video with excellent descriptions of how the perception of Glasgow life was then.
    Thank you

    Thanks for posting this!, film like this is important not only in a historical sense but nostalgia also.. I’ve walked around the streets of glasgow for the best part of 30 years and it’s not until you see old footage you realise how much has changed (for better or worse) so again thank you.

    I was 18 in 1994. I miss the City Centre as it used to be. It is a complete cesspit now. Looking at this video just hits home how much Glasgow has changed, for the worse. Not a Romanian beggars in sight. Happy days

    That bit at Royal Exchange Square where the old guy playing violin or fiddle at the archway has been a notorious spot for homeless beggars for as long as I can remember.
    No one would dare try busking there nowadays.

      Really? It used to basically be Scotland’s answer to Belgrade during the war back then. Grim, grey, cigarettey, miserable full of council hi rise flats and poverty. at least it’s now a lot less rough imo and it’s been done up a lot/ redeveloped.

    • @robertmcmillan3638
      @robertmcmillan3638 Před 3 lety +1

      @@glasgowmcglasgowfacevotegr7049 It may have been "done up" but not for the better.
      There's hardly any shops worth visiting now. Argyle St and Sauchiehall Street are just pure tat parades now.
      The place might not be as rough as it was but other areas of crime have rocketed over the last two decades (I.D fraud, sexual assaults, etc).
      Everywhere also seems to look like a glass and steel salute to Berlin and the European super state project nowadays as stylish and iconic buildings such as the St Enoch and Govan underground stations are gone and are now in the aforementioned E.U style which no doubt suits the never ending sea of foreigners that now reside in the city.

Come in and Obelisk Books was on the right, go straight ahead and take the left beside the stairs which wound around the lift and it took you through to the Movie Memorabilia shop and the proper antiques section, which was predominately in the basement. The cafe was downstairs too.
      I still have furniture, clothes and comics which I purchased in the Virginia Galleries.
