medicine is not hard

Did a half call this week (6-10pm) and I just thought it would be really nice if I could bring you guys along… one common theme I’ve been thinking about recently is the idea that working in medicine is not ‘hard’, especially in the context of the brokenness that we see everyday… I’m constantly reminded that I did nothing to choose the life I have, and if I’m given this privilege, there’s a calling to serve whoever that I cross paths with🤍
    .
    Hope y’all enjoy this vlog!!

london med student here :) as someone going through predominantly preclinical years, I loved your take on how med school isn't "hard" compared to what patients are having to go through. I look forward to applying all this outside of the classroom one day! Your training hospital is beautiful and I wish we got scrubs so stylish!!

Love your reflection. It speaks volumes about how you are mature beyond your years. Medicine is incredibly challenging and it is easy to get disillusioned. But you have such a great perspective. From an adult in my 30s who is trying to battle cynicism while doing law.

i totally agree with what you said about us being "normal" is actually something good, and something that we tend to take for granted! i never really realised that as long as we have the heart to help people in need, nothing really seems that hard because of the inner motivation that we all have to make their lives better 😭❤ thank you so much for posting this video!! as a student still deciding to choose their career, this has really inspired me to perhaps study med too🙃!

CZcams randomly recommended your video to me. I'm a PGY2 (turning 3), although I studied and am now practising in UK.
    Some thoughts:
    1. You might be surprised to learn that many NHS hospitals don't have dedicated on-call rooms for doctors like the one you showed. We just use the doctor's mess or any random empty office to snooze if there is time to do so.
    2. Slightly disagree with what you share about whether it is 'hard'. Indeed we can never understand what our patients are going through, and what they go through is indeed a lot more significant than us. Yes doctors are on the whole more privileged than others. But I think it is still not wrong to say that the path is still a hard one. They can both be true.
    3. This wasn't your main point, but as you brought up the issue of 'patient choice' with regard to their conditions. I think it is easy indeed for most people to feel for those with e.g. autoimmune conditions, where it was completely out of their control. I wonder if you have any thoughts on a patient who insists on smoking, despite having severe peripheral arterial disease with one previous amputation, and now potentially facing another? Or a patient with liver cirrhosis due to chronic alcohol excess?
    4. Indeed being healthy in itself is a privilege. Many people don't realise this, even myself from time to time.
    5. As someone else mentioned, I find it so thoughtful that your scrubs has a dedicated clip for a tendon hammer!
    6. Is this reduced exercise tolerance? 😉 (6:03)
    7. I believe what you mentioned about feeling 'incompetent' is impostor syndrome, and yes it is more common than people realise. It's just that nowadays we are more willing to admit it. In medical school I was taught to recognise and admit my limits of competence (albeit come up with a reasonable alternative). I thought that was one of the best lessons. If anything, patients should fear the doctor who claims to know-it-all, rather than the one who admits 'I don't know, let me check and get back to you'. (The same applies to politicians.)
All the best and look forward to your subsequent videos.

    • @krisonsum
      @krisonsum  Před měsícem

Thanks for your sharing! Getting back on the question in point number 3🙌🏻
What I would say is that I hope to encourage everyone to have a deeper level of empathy towards anyone who we come across. We have never lived a single day in the lives of these people, so how can we sit there in our seats and assume they ‘chose’ this lifestyle?
I’ve met severe alcoholics on therapy before who (when sober), tell me that they hate their alcohol habit, and they really want to get out of it, but they still drink because their life is just so painful… they were brought up in a abusive home, and every time they drink they just have a small window of escape from the pain in their life… when they come home after drinks, their family members would shunt them (because of their abusive nature), but in shunting them the person feels even more pain, which causes him to drink more… they live in this constant vicious cycle, and me having lived my life where I come from a loving home (in which I did not choose), how can I ever judge?
Therefore I’ve learnt that whenever people choose certain lifestyles, yes there is an element of personal choice and yes they do have to face the consequences of their choices… but I personally believe it’s inaccurate to attribute their lifestyle choices entirely to poor decision making, and especially us (everyone as a whole, not necessarily just healthcare people) who come from more priviledge, we need to exercise more caution when passing judgement but rather tap more into the empathy and compassion that is in us all.
      Hope this clarifies!!🤍
