Treasurer Paul Keating responds to a matter of public importance raised by Opposition Leader John Hewson. 15th November 1990 parlinfo.aph.gov.au/parlInfo/...
Oh wow, he really understood the massive structural problems that Australia was in and needed to get out (i.e. relying on digging stuff from the ground and selling off, enjoying the lucky country but without transforming for the future). He's a massive genius. We need another genius.
Keating was a political genius, he was sharp on any detail of figures. Labor has not one member of there party close to his mental strategy and stamina today. He was rarity in the Australian political landscape, now Australian politics is in the wilderness.
Lol, he was spot on about Thatcher. Tying their exchange rate to the European Exchange Rate Mechanism resulted in Black Wednesday (although this occured in the term of her successor).
even back in the 90s there were great people standing up against the rich and their monopolies - we need people like keating in politics now more than ever imo - I really hope independent journalism in australia continues to undo the rupert murdoch propaganda model, we desperately need australians capable of critical thinking... thx for posting, keating was a state legend, we must learn from his historic lessons
Well PJK shows in this debate how self interest in the Tories always prevails over national interest. Where is what's good for the country is better than us?? Well point proved by PJK! Never changes with Tories.
John Hewson was a gentlemen. I love Pk but with this we has too much bulldog. points lost. PK Future Pollies should watch the Keating/Hewson battles. Marvellous
John Howard Left The Country With 20 Billion in Reserve, Paul Left Us With 20% Interest Rates To Pay On Our Mortgage Loans, And Financial Loans, Yea, Real Great😢😢
GOD!!!! WHERE ARE YOU KEATING!!!! THE BUNCH OF SENSITIVE ASS WIPES AND ACTIVISTS WE HAVE IN LABOUR TODAY IS DISCUSTING!!!! KEATING WAS A GENIUS AND STILL HAS IT TODAY, SHAME ON YOU ALBO 🇦🇺💚💛
Politicians today are so soft. Imagine Keating on this rampage today - he’s be put up for abuse, sexism, offensiveness and whatever else the snowflakes would come up with.
I don't know about all the other financial problems but he's talking through his arse about "Australian ships being overmanned" Tension winches. Hydrolic hatch covers. Auto pilots, roll on roll off. Containerization all streamed lined cargo movements on this coast. Keating knew shit about the Australian shipping industry, but he knew plenty about strong unions & the threat they were to his throne.
All the commentors below have no memory of his “recession we had to have”. 17% interest rates and over 10% unemployment. He was a showman in the Parliament but had questionable policy outcomes.
Meh, neoclassical economics is the messy first pricipals dogma that both sides of parliament apply when any policy is created. Whiney fuck boomers on some high interest rates for a couple years on their 25k homes and a $400 a week wage. 30 years now, if you can even afford a house ffs. Do the maths and weigh it against having a globally competent visionary genius that worked for the country first. Mainstream economics is debunked and the result is todays shitshow but if he was around now he would have thrown it out and evolved, albo and dutton still hold onto it like it's maths and the alphabet
@@speedygonzalez3961 you are wrong. There were 2 terms of Frazer Liberal government before and one term of Whitlam Labor before that - the most extremely financially and socially disruptive government in the history of Australia. The extreme spending of Whitlam and the “do nothing much” Frazer years most likely contributed to the 17% interest rates and 11% unemployment that Keating oversaw. To his credit, I do not recall Keating blaming previous governments for his “recession we had to have”. He was clever in some ways and a scoundrel in others.
Today marks this channel's 10th anniversary. Thanks for watching!

Cheers!
Love your work. Keep it coming!
Congrats!
Australia's last great orator. The man that created thirty years of prosperity that John Howard took credit for.
Most accurate comment I've seen on the internet in a very long time.
Hear Hear
@@ajmage5319 He's bonkers on Communist China, though ...
Too right
Absolutely, well said.
Feel like pure shit just want Keating back
This could be delivered by him today in response to the mess the Coalition left this country in again
Never took a prisoner alive. Keating was phenomenal
We need Keating back in the political arena, especially now
He's the only one that had a set of balls. Razor sharp wit. A shame we have nobody that even comes close to his caliber today :/

Kevin Rudd
14:31 Don't know if accidental or deliberate but GODDAMN he is a boss!
Hilarious!
Some people do count on their fingers like that, but considering Keating's track record of schooling people it is almost certainly intentional.
That’s classic Keating, there’s no serious chance it was accidental
It was Paul Keating... It was deliberate and awesome.
It's a critique of today's mob, Jesus its so prescient.
This is what ppl have never understood about Keating, he earned the right to sling some abuse because he won the argument on policy first
He had an answer to everything, but the Tories have a natural disadvantage being a fact free zone
It's overwhelming he had such grasp of so many issues. Wonder what he would have done if he had another term in office.
Every Australian needs to see this.
At least we knew where we were all headed back when Keating was at full swing. Now we are headed where?
A great Orator in fact the greatest. High intellect with factual information and then builds the slow assassination
I don't understand the economy but he really knows the numbers doesn't he. He's not even looking down at paperwork
Paul Keating should be Prime Minister during this period and we wouldn’t be in lockdown.
Bring Keating back
Paul Keating is literally The James Bond of Australian Prime Minister’s
Australia's greatest ever Prime Minister....by a long long way
Our Prime Minister..give him respect ❤️ best speaker ever!
Goat level spray from PK.
that speech also sums up the current bunch of liberals...
The Liberals: The faces change but the bullshit remains the same
He still doesn't stop criticizing Morrison and the Libs to this day. His recent 7:30 report interview was priceless.
Shoutie Mcshout face Morrison would be in the fetal position if he had to deal with paul Keating.
@@strongboy7289 And nor should he. Scummo and his henchmen and women deserve it.
Hewson coming out and slamming the current Liberal Party is extremely sobering.
Awesome upload! Nice!
Easy to see why he had to be PM and why we had 11 years of regret after 1996. And again after 2013.
Wow. The libs have not changed. Welcome 2021, Paul could be speaking to Scotty from marketing.
Lol, he was spot on about Thatcher.
Tying their exchange rate to the European Exchange Rate Mechanism resulted in Black Wednesday (although this occured in the term of her successor).
really wish there was a triple upvote button, thx for uploading, so happy to see these clips of keating making sense of the privatised mania
Outstanding. Thanks as always!
Profound
You were a shiver looking for a spine to run up. haha
Paul Keating ever passes away they should have him buried at Paul Keating Park with a bronze statue of when he was tearing apart the Tories
Yep and I will piss on it. He’s a grub. You have all been fooled.
They use of turkeys in this debate is diabolical 😆
Criticisms of the Coalition that unfortunately remain current!
Go get em Paul.. ❤️
He knew then he was 100 percent above..
This was his 'get stuffed' English speach
Keating was a bloody genius..the last great politition
I warn the member for Mayonnaise.....
Imagine calling Paul Keating gutless
I could never.
Thanks for the memories, we were lucky to have him!

Did anyone ever put anything over this bloke ?
No.
Must with "Guile Theme" music
"Oh you goose"
haha. PK demolished them.
Have you ever heard anything posed so objectively and cohesive from a coalition representative? ..Or from a labor mp since?
..ah just nevermind the lime-green purple and teal tie... ahem
Go Paul!
Wish Keating had a chance to put that littiputan cro magnon Dutton in his place.
the last great australian debater, in all honesty
he told it like it was coming as much as we hated it
6:30, classic!
A master at his craft.
14:31 very subtle middle finger. Class, PJ, class :D
Given his comments re Thatcher and the ERM I'd date this to October/November 1990.
And That Was At 20% Interest, Not Bad Paul, While the Working Class You Wers Supposed To Represent, Bled Through The Arsehole🎉🎉
He was great
Political rock star.
Hard to believe that Keating was an Australian politician.
Harder to believe he left school at 14.
How did you end up with Howard after this??
Jeremys spoken David!
Farmyard gaggle 😂
Eat your heart out Hewson.
Ouch.
He's a funny man
I agree with macktran with his views

Potent! 😮
Australia needs another Paul Keating , not Morrison or Albanese or John Howard or Bob Hawke
Albo was schooled by Hawke and Keating.
@@hondomclean6759 doesn't appear he listened to what Keating was trying to teach him.
Bob Hawke was great as well. He created Medicare and also putted Keating on powered.
Well Howard sure helped fix the docks, Paul ;)
Anyone notice Keating give the middle finger at 14:32 🤣
They love that sort of shenanigans those two😂😂🎉🎉😊

14:31 anyone notice PK flipping the bird?
Hate his party, but Bob and Paul brought this country out of the 60s very quicky. He is the orator of Australia that is similar Churchill in WW2
Has a good grasp of the big picture😅
His 6 weeks ay???
Out the back in the 80s🎉😅😅😅😅
im watching the keeting marathon. It seemed right to do at this time. WEre fucked.......
Clogged with sclerosis 😊 he don’t mince he’s word
Keating hopping into the Liberal front bench???….. Just another Tuesday
Politicians today are so soft. Imagine Keating on this rampage today - he’s be put up for abuse, sexism, offensiveness and whatever else the snowflakes would come up with.
Yeah that would be slim pickings wouldn't it sport??
Just remember, he is self admittablely labour right. By his own words, the ALP makes him look like a bolshevik.
I don't know about all the other financial problems but he's talking through his arse about "Australian ships being overmanned"
