    When I went to Edinburgh Castle I really enjoyed, although it was a long time ago and I can't remember much of it so would definitely like to go again. I would say, however, that I don't think people should use the audio guide. I, admittedly, haven't used the audio guide, or ever used an audio guide, but from other people's accounts they seem to enjoy the castle more when they just go around on their own than with an audio guide. There are lots of signs explaining what everything is so you won't feel left out. The audio guide would be very interesting in terms of learning things, but I would probably recommend researching all of the interesting facts about the castle before going and when you go through it you can feel knowledgable about things and be able to point things out!

    • @Kakibot
      @Kakibot  Před 2 lety +1

      Interesting! I guess it really depends on personal preference - I think on some level I agree that it can add to the overwhelm when you're moved along by the crowd and you're trying to find your audioguide chapter and really take it in. Also probably better for solo travellers as groups might want to have chats among each other!

    " Maybe the pro tip to enjoy going to the castle is just don't be me " , ha ha !! , that summed up this entertaining video perfectly !. I think £18 for a ticket is very reasonable , for comparison , the London Eye costs an extra £11.50 & only lasts 30 minutes , there are hundreds of ferris wheels around the world many with just as good views. If you like history , the castle is unique , built on a 350 million year old volcano with evidence of habitation going back around 3,000 years , as it was the most attacked fortification in the UK , the oldest surviving building is almost 1,000 years old , you could easily spend up to 5 hours looking around the many attractions. As it was the UK's 2nd most popular payed for site before covid , it will often be crowded , i guess it would make sense to go when it opens up and obviously choose a sunny day to enjoy the experience more as the location is very exposed to inclement weather but it also gives it amazing panoramic views !.

    • @Kakibot
      @Kakibot  Před 2 lety +2

      I agree that compared to especially London attractions it is very reasonable. Plus I really appreciate that the price hasn't really gone up in the 10 years I've been here - as you can imagine the way I think about twenty quid is different now that I've been making adult money for 9 years compared to when I was a student eating £1 boil-in-a-bag iceland curries every night! .D I still really appreciate the castle a lot, and what a treat to see it dominate the panorama from pretty much anywhere in the city, but I thought it might be helpful to share my experience with others so they can be better prepared for what they're getting into and can fully enjoy their time at the castle! .)

    I’ve been to the castle many times. It is now very expensive, but there is LOTS to see, this film makes out that it’s a tad stressful when you’re there - in all the times I’ve been, I’ve never found it stressful in any way what so ever 🤷🏻‍♂️. The views are spectacular, North, South, East and West. I’d say if you’re in Edinburgh you’d regret not visiting the castle.

    Since you're a resident in Scotland, have you considered getting a membership for Historic Scotland? That would give you free access to all the Historic Scotland sites including Edinburgh, Stirling, Urquhart and Blackness castles and many other sites. When I lived in Edinburgh, I had a membership and it meant I could just walk into Edinburgh Castle on a sunny day, stand and admire the views for 10 minutes and then walk out again.

    • @Kakibot
      @Kakibot  Před 2 lety +2

      We already have a membership of National Trust for Scotland, and when I compared them I preferred it over Historic Scotland as they take care of so many great spots outside of Edinburgh! But maybe sometime in the future I'll switch to cover all the sites! The idea of being able to go in anytime is definitely an attractive one!

    Until the formation of the Scottish Government in 1999, Edinburgh Castle was a military garrison, with real sentries either side of the main gates. Since then it has been in the care of Historic Scotland, and in my view, it has never been quite the same. They do look after it well, and so apart from the lack of sentries there's little in the way of visual change; but somehow it has changed from a place that everyone treated with a degree of respect to just another mass tourist attraction. Craigmillar Castle in the south east of the city is in many ways, much more historic and interesting; and my advice to tourists is to make Stirling Castle their main Scottish castle experience!

    When we visited, back in May, we only went up to the Esplanade. We did, however, go to Craigmillar Castle. A 20 minute bus ride and an amazing walk up through a field. We got off the bus at the Royal Infirmary and walked. Craigmillar Castle road is very narrow and not walker friendly. At the base of the road is a path leading through a field that leads to the castle. As you said, crowds are not your thing. Not mine either but when we went, we had the castle pretty much to ourselves. Maybe you could show people how easy the public transit is to use in Edinburgh. Enjoy your videos.

    My grandfather was born & raised in Edinburgh. His sister, my great aunt Tina, Christina Forrest MacLennan, was married to Major John MacLennan of the Gordon Highlanders, and after returning from some time in India they lived in the officers quarters at the Castle & raised a family. The Major & their eldest son Ian, 19, were both killed in action in France & Italy in WWI. She & her grieving children, 2 sons & a daughter got on with life, her children, my dad's cousins, never married. I think that losing her husband & dearly cherished son, in that way, is the underlying reason why Aunt Tina started the Castle's "pet graveyard" you mentioned, among her many accomplishments. I haven't been there but many members of my family have. I inherited Aunt Tina's painted portrait from her time as a Member of the Admiralty in London, with Churchill at the head, she travelled the world as an Ambassador to the Commonwealth for Britain after serving in WWII as first commissioned officer for the WRNS in Northern Scotland. I hope you enjoyed a little more history. Her Story. Her children gave it to my Dad, her favourite nephew, and dad gave it to me before he passed away 35 years ago. Seeing in her refined features the resolute solemnity & fortitude of her life's mission, every day for 50 years, has been inspiring.

    I am enamored with the age of everything in Scotland so we did make the Castle part of our itinerary. It is crowded, but hopefully good weather and taking your time would make it worth it. Perhaps not for everyone. I love the dog cemetery, that is a sweet nod to those puppers.
    We went towards the end of June and they were already setting up for the military tattoo so the Esplanade was blocked with seating, I was disappointed we didn’t get the full view of the Castle or off to the side for the the view of Old Town.

    I visited the castle in July of 2019. Had the best weather possible in Edinburgh and I loved it there. Compared to other castles in Europe the fee is pretty normal for an attraction like this. It might be expensive but you don't need to spend this much on entry fees every day. And even I visited at the peak of the tourist season compared to other castles like this for example Schönbrunn in Vienna or Neuschwanstein, which are tourist favourites as well, the crowd was pretty manageable. When I visited the castle in Prague the summer before the crowd was much bigger as well. So I have really lovely memories from my visit. Only the crown jewels are a bit disappointing.

      I'm glad you had a great time! I honestly think the castle is a wonderful spot to visit for anyone who has the time, money and is well dressed .D Because I actually loved that there was so much open space to explore, and I much prefer it to many castle experiences I had back in Europe (which were fully indoors and often not free-range, self-guiding at all) - but I wouldn't want people to think it's 100% essential! (Also Prague castle is its own beast in my books because you can explore pretty much the whole area for free, and you can come at like.. 9 pm and have it all for yourself so... overstimulated introvert heaven!)

I never saw that many people within a castle like I did there. But I guess it depends very on the season when you are visiting Prague. I visited a ton of castles in my life so far as well. My favorite was the Residenz in munich during the pandemic. I had an audio guide and could take my time and because of the pandemic I had almost every room for myself. One mistake I think some people make is thinking these castles are places that were occupied by royalty . i think they are mixing castles up with palaces so when you see its really a fortress, there is some disappointment.

So....still haven't made a decision, but if I do decide to skip the castle I won't feel so worried that I'm missing out.

      I went there , live in Edinburgh ,after visiting 18 yrs ago 😂. Well I was really disappointed with Edinburgh castle. I think they promote it because it’s symbolic and historical . But it’s certainly not the most memorable castle for me.
      For the money paid it lacked much inside . I didn’t realise it was simply ruins . I wouldn’t have minded but there is not much to see internally . I felt like it was just another cash making site for the city. If they charged less I wouldn’t complain about the lack .
      I think you can pay just for the outside tour where the cannons are . The views from here are worth paying for .
      If you are in Edinburgh not very far, a very short train ride away , I highly recommend “Linlithgow palace “. Make sure it’s open because I tried to visit a few months ago and it was closed for renovations . But last time we visited it was I believe £5.00 to enter , which is underpriced for this amazing place . I would be happy to pay more . They have young tour guides dressed up in the period clothing giving us great history on all the rooms . It is mostly a shell but it’s huge! Ideal for a dry day. We spent several hours there and didn’t wish to leave . There is also a rolling hill and park with large pond/lake . A few small shops for local ice cream and food , also really close by.
      We’ve visited in the summer peak season and it was still relatively quiet . The site is so big and seemingly undiscovered by tourists it’s never too overcrowded .
      Outside of Edinburgh (so far) Urquhart castle was also breathtaking. Also highly recommend . It’s more expensive but worth every penny

    I visited the castle for the first time a couple of weeks ago and it was also very cold, windy and surprisingly crowded. I thought that getting a timed ticket would mean that the crowds would be limited. So I understand what you are saying about feeling a wee bit anxious. I was surprised at how much was up there and the views were amazing. I regretted not bring my big camera, the reason I did not was because it is quite weighty and I did not like the thought of carrying it through Edinburgh. My favourite part of the trip was seeing the 1 o'clock canon, which I did manage to film on my phone. Although I was impressed with the castle I think that if you have limited time in Edinburgh a better place to visit, which is free would be the National Museum of Scotland. Stirling 100%. Craigmillar or Blackness Castle are also good, too. Blackness is very small, though, but it's where they filmed scenes of Fort William in Outlander.
      Although Edinburgh Castle is still good as well.

    I went through a pretty embarrassing moment when I visited the castle in 2019 as well. I remember I was taking pictures when suddenly I heard a tour guy telling people a story about the castle. As soon as I got near the crowd, this guy stopped talking, and he and all the people were staring at me. Then the tour guide said very rudely to me that it was a paid tour, so I couldn't be there. As I suffer from a kind of stage fright, it was like a horrible moment and also wondered why he was so rude?.
    I mean, I know they don't do guide tour for free but have some manner first, right?. So, well I did have a great time there nonetheless, as I am very fond of history.

      I don't think that is fair at all. While I wouldn't barge in on a paid tour, I think it would not be right for the guide to expect a visitor to forgo a part of the castle or castle grounds because they are working.

Neither of us is really interested in history, so have to agree with you .. the Castle is not going to be seeing any of our hard-earned cash. What about The Royal Yacht .. another expensive place to visit .. is it worth it.

    Kakibot I know what you mean about the castle and agree 👍 with you. I would also suggest if someone wants to see history and have panoramic views without financial cost, I would suggest Calton hill. Although I don't personally recommend anyone to go up Arthur's seat, as it very very dangerous.

      I guess in general Edinburgh is more of an outdoor adventure than people might expect! With the cobblestones and hills I see people slip over when it's rainy all the time, and as you said it is absolutely not unheard of that people lose their lives on Arthur's seat.

      It is very steep in places, and mostly paved with rough cobblestones; so you'd certainly not feel very comfortable. Mind you, the same applies to most of Edinburgh's roads, which are in an atrocious state; and I don't mean just the cobbled ones! Unmade country paths are often considerably smoother!

    It's kinda funny, when I visited Edinburgh back in 2013 I had 1 & a half days and my first visit was to the castle, and I loved it. However, I think an individuals context for the visit and pre-views about something are key. For instance, for me that was my first visit back to the UK, my home land for 17yrs and in the meantime I'd gained an interest in European history, castles included of which there are none here in Australia. History here for me (I want to stress that!) doesn't interest me much and is fairly lacking, in a world context. So I went to Edinburgh castle excited and was moved by being surrounded by all that history. For you I wonder if your preconceptions already would lessen the experience, if that's fair to say? You've mentioned the cost in previous videos and it took you 10yrs, so maybe you just weren't that bothered in the first place perhaps. I get it. I don't think anyone should feel they have to see certain things becuase they're well known and popular attractions. There are plenty of things I haven't seen here, much to some people's confusion. I get it too with the crowds things. In fact only yesterday I did something here, taking advantage of some time off work and as much as I tried to just accept that there will be crowds, I didn't enjoy it as much as I should have becuase crowds make me tense. They have a saying here, 'just suck it up' to mean deal with it. Which I agree with to a large extent, in forging forward despite these stupid hang ups us humans have. But sometimes..

    • @Kakibot
      @Kakibot  Před 2 lety +1

      Regarding the crowds and sucking it up... well, we do, don't we? I mean... we still push through and do the thing we came to do, but it's hard to tell one's brain to have a good time despite the discomfort, that's some spiritual master level of ordering your brain to go with the flow! .D Anyway... glad you had a great time at the castle, I do think it must be a real treat to many people who are visiting Scotland for its dark medieval vibe.

    • @gallaghim
      @gallaghim Před 2 lety +1

      @@Kakibot We do indeed, I think I try to be strict on myself with these things. Even if the experience is marred in some way by the discomfort of the crowds. I have travelled a few times solo and I'd rather have had a special companion each time. Each time had its fair share of moments of sadness, self pity, loneliness but I'd rather look at myself and say I saw these places than desperately wish I had the guts to go. Strange though, ask me to go to a bar alone and I'd sink to the ground in fear. I like to think we grow a teeny tiny bit when we persevere and face these crowds. I guess what I meant with partly agreeing with that saying they have here, is I can see the value in challenging ourselves to face these fears. I think sometimes I get impatient with myself & these fears that seem a bit childish sometimes. But telling myself to man up doesn't really work either. All the same, best of luck with your hangups *friendly thumbs up*

    National War Museum is free to enter? just like the National Army Museum, and the Imperial War Museum in London. Off the street and straight in. Well I am a bit slow-witted at times but to get to the National War Museum which is advertised is free to enter, I have to enter the grounds of a Castle which I have no interest in and pay £18 x 2 . We are up in late May 22 to see the City with my daughter. £36 can be used for something else . English language definition , “FREE” without cost or payment? Ps We normally put in a few quid in the pot when visiting free museums to help with upkeep.

    • @Kakibot
      @Kakibot  Před 2 lety

      Well the issue here is that the entrance is not placed “on the street” but at the castle beyond the ticket gate, so unless you do a bit of deep dive research you might not even know it’s there! It seems like when you go to the ticketing booth they will be willing to let you in with a special lanyard, not sure if they then aggressively keep you from enjoying any of the paid bits of the castle .D

    Hello Kakibot,
    Well i lived in the Castle for 4 years between Aug 1996 and Aug 2000.
    Yes i know people say nobody lives there but they don't know what their talking about.
    I served with The Royal Miltary Police for many years and The Castle was my last posting with 170 Pro Coy RMP.
    I lived in the New Barrack Block which is situated just up from the one oclock gun and the officers mess on the same side.
    Most of the casle is just nonsence for tourists with the oldest part being st margarets chapel. About 700 years old. A lot of the rest is modern and just fluff. Don't believe all the hype.

    I can sincerely and emphatically say it was not your fault. It is a massive gimic now. As child it was magical. I wish I had kept that memory and not visited recently. Shocking lack of knowledge throughout from guides. That said one or two were very helpful. I guess I romanticised it, as much is actually rebuilt from the 19th century and the outer walls are the most amazing site from Princes St, The Grassmarket and Castle Terrace. Stirling do a much better job at educating, for all ages and at less cost. Falkland Palace is a must see. Saddens me to write this, but it is a tourist trap. Clotted cream is not a Scottish tradition, butter and their 90p tottie wee jam pot will suffice.
    Do research before going, print what you can in English, not many brochures in that language. Check if they are restoring...I mean replacing any parts before going. Be content with the view and rather visit The Scott's Monument for the view of the firth of forth. Cherrio and awe the best!

    I find tour feeback mostly usless... You obviously should expect crowds in top tourist attraction, you should obviously be prepared for weather, naturally there might be darker and less accessible spaces - it is medieval castle fter all. The price isn't much if you consider how much you get for it and how much it costs to preserve such massive object, staff, etc. Don't know...
