  • Got the car back from the cage builder (Spec Racing in SoCal) and I'm really happy with the way it came out. This is a quick comparison between the new roll cage and the one in my original C5 Corvette, noting some of the things to look out for.

    Such an improvement over the Phoenix cages from years back. Always kept me from buying their cars in the past, which is why I went with a c6. Great video! Might be coming back to Corvette racing. 😎

    What are those eye hooks that you are using for the lap belts? Is this the best way to install lap belt mounts on a C5? Seems like the typical way of drilling through the floor with big washers would not be legal with SCCA due to the floor material in these cars. Thanks

      Ideally, you want the lap belts to rotate freely and find their natural angle. Those eyelets allow that to happen a little better than attaching the anchor directly with a bolt and most restraint systems come with the necessary hooks to attach the belt to an eyelet. I’m not sure of the legality of mounting to the balsa composite floor. I suppose you could do it by welding a support between the frame and the tunnel, like the factory seat mount, but the angle would still be restricted. Better to weld some reinforcement into the tunnel, I think. The anti-sub straps can be integrated into the seat mount without issue.

      @@joshc1017 I'm currently trying to build up a Spec Corvette and I've been trying to figure out what everyone does for mounting these. Is this what you did in your other race car? I assume it's pretty safe if its the normal way of mounting the lap belts?

      @@Frodycanssen Yes, my lap belts in the black car are also mounted to the tunnel and the frame rail. Just make sure that you weld in some reinforcement to the tunnel. The sheet metal isn't strong enough to mount to without a backing plate. The difference in the black car is that the mount point on the tunnel was a little lower and I wasn't able to install the eyelet that came with my belts because it interfered with the seat mount. Instead, I had to mount that side with a pivot sleeve. competitionmotorsport.com/schroth-pivot-sleeves

    Great video. They sell these as just the back half, 4pt style cage now. Its difficult to tell from the video, but would it be possible to run a passenger seat with harnesses with this setup?

    • @joshc1017
      @joshc1017  Před 2 lety

      Yes, but I would call Trackspec and tell them this is what you’re doing. They may have additional options for you. The bar that you would attach the harness to is a little shorter on the passenger side and is not recessed to the rear of the car. They may be able to raise the bar a little, which will give you more width where the harness bar intersects the diagonal. That would give you ample room to keep the inner belt perfectly straight.

    $4500.00?

      @joshc1017  Před 2 lety

      $5200 installed plus options. The kit is $2200 plus options if you want to install yourself. Self install would have been fun but I don’t trust my welding skills.
