Kerala INDIAN FOOD Tour of the Capital - Parotta, Kappa, Banana Fry | Trivandrum, India

  • After years of dreaming of exploring the southern Indian state of Kerala, I finally made my dream a reality in January of 2020. I landed in the capital city of Trivandrum in the wee hours of the morning and set out on an epic Kerala Indian food tour of Trivandrum just hours later. Come along with me as I explore Trivandrum!
    Vishnu: / vishnukg007
    Edaneram Restaurant: / visit.edaneram
I began my day by meeting up with my boy Vishnu at Sri Padmanabha Temple. It’s dedicated to Lord Vishnu. There, we saw pilgrims from Sabarimala Temple, a Hindu temple in Kerala. Then, I put on a helmet and hopped on the back of Vishnu’s motorbike to head to Good Morning Hotel!
The Good Morning Hotel starts selling food at 6:30 in the morning, and they’re usually sold out by 8:30. We watched them make porotta, a type of flatbread, and the spicy beef curry, in the kitchen before eating.
The beef curry was spicy, tender, and so delicious! I loved the masala. The paratha was flaky and had lots of layers, which absorbed the masala and made it different from a paratha. Then, we tried a delicious black tea with mint leaves, ginger, masala, and herbs.
Then, we visited Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, which is a famous pilgrimage site for women. About 500,000 women come here and make sweets in brick ovens. Then, on our way to Chala Market, we tried one of at least 14 local varieties of banana, called palayamkodan. It wasn’t quite ripe, but was a little sweet, soft, and tangy.
Then, we visited the vegetable and fish market. We saw some limes, pickles, potatoes, cabbage, tomatoes, and eggplant. They even had a vegetable called lady’s finger! Then, we tried soda sarbath, a sweet drink made of a crushed root plant mixed with sugar syrup, fresh lemon juice, water, and ice. It was herbal and medicinal but still refreshing and super sweet.
We continued to the fish market. On the way, we saw some tapioca and lots of fresh fish. There were about 20 vendors. On the left was fish ready for sale, while the butchers were on the right, breaking down fish that had been sold.
Past them is dried fish like sardines, shrimp, snakefish, and more. Then, we headed to Edaneram Restaurant. They usually open at noon, but they opened an hour early just for us!
Edaneram is bright, air-conditioned, and colorful, but still has a cozy feel. We tried some boiled water with spices. It contained lots of flavorful spices!
Root vegetables used to be popular in Keralian cuisine, and Edaneram is trying to bring that back. I tried three root vegetables including yam and cassava (yuca). There were also three chutneys: bird’s eye chilly chutney (kanthari mulaku), Kashmir chili chutney, and gooseberry chutney.
The bird’s eye chilly chutney wasn’t too spicy at first, but it snuck up on me a few seconds later! It also contained onions. The cassava was dense and bland, but was perfect mixed with the spicy chutneys! Then, I tried a chili, which hit me the second I put it in my mouth!
Then, I tried some hot lime tea, which was really good! Next was the Kashmiri chili chutney, which is made from roasted chilies. The gooseberry chutney was also great, but my favorite was the bird’s eye chilly!
Then, we had a sweet, fried banana with buffalo roast (pazham pori and pothu curry). The curry contains bits of coconut. It was unbelievable with the banana! The banana tasted like a plantain. I loved the sweet and spicy combo and the light dough on the banana. It was my favorite dish of the day!
What an incredible first morning in Kerala!

Hi david brother, so good to see you in my city trivandrum. I am badly missing my home place. You can find many varieties of cuisines in entire kerala. The style of cooking and taste's differ from one point to another. But if you can come to dubai, you can find all the varieties of foods here. People from all the part of kerala are uniting here, so you can have all the types.

Yo david, I don't think the water was "spicy", it's boiled with different herbs like "tulsi", you could call it a type of herbal water and sometimes they add some dried things in there like "karingali" as well.
