  • My dear Canon RF 100-500mm which is the lens I use 99% of the time for my wildlife photography randomly decided to abandon me after less than 2 years use while I was on a wildlife photography trip on one of places I love the most, Helgoland.
    Join me on this small vlog while I test if the lens has been fixed and I share what I have been up to during the past few month of absence from CZcams. Trips, studies, birds, teaching and a bit more :)

    Have you ever had a broken camera or lens? What happened and was it fixed? Curious about your experiences! 🤔

      My Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 USM L (non-IS) broke in half after about 30 years of service (a screw failed). It was a bother, but it spurred me to move over to Nikon (at the time for the D500 and 500 PF). But I mean, that lens had been producing amazing images since 1988 so good going on it to make it to 2018. These days I have multiple lenses with a bit of overlap and multiple bodies. And while not tested in anger, my insurance will provide loaner lenses and bodies if something does fail.

      Canon EF70-200 f2.8 L (non IS) - dropped it and now the AF is intermittent. I dropped my 50mm f1.4 a few days after getting it (used lens) and AF stopped completely. I haven't bothered to fix either as it's not worth it financially (and the 70-200 doesn't have spares anyway). I also dropped my 20-35mm f2.8 L (also out of spare parts availability) and the button for AF/M came off. AF still works without issue, it's just a p.i.t.a to change between AF and M as you need a fine tool to move the wire part.

      Hi Chiara!
      I'm from Brazil and the 100-500mm lens is my dream. I'm planning to buy it, but I'm very worried that similar problems might happen to me. My father has a broken EF 24-105mm lens, and I discovered that zoom lenses can have issues caused by the flat cable when you frequently zoom in and out. It's the movement of this cable that causes the problem. I realized that if I buy the 100-500mm, I might face this issue someday too. The 24-105mm still works with a fixed aperture (F4), but if you let the camera decide, you get an error. I hope to get my 100-500mm very soon and that problems like this don't happen too quickly.

      @@arthurgarciatuk I presume your rather had a mark 1 24-105 (EF)? If so, the problem was a badly designed lens with the aperture ribbon cable being constantly pinched. The mark 1 units had a very high failure rate (it wasn't if, but when). The mark 2 improved and fixed it mostly, but it wasn't perfect and the issue still persists, just to a much lower percentage. AFAIK, the RF version of this lens no longer has the problem (i.e. totally solved).
      Any lens can fail. Even expensive Ones.

    The exact same thing happened to me some years ago with my EF100-400 (original version). One minute working...the next the lens shuddered and would not auto focus. I replaced it with version 2.

    Enjoying your content Chiara, thank you! Would it be possible to upload videos with a higher bitrate and less compression? There are a lot of artifacts when watching on a bigger screen such as TV

    I bought my Sony A6400 with the Kit Lens, because i wanted to see what focal lengh i like for a prime lens :D After a week, my lens stopped working.. completely. I dosent wanted to zoom, focus.. my Camera says that theres no Lens on or a Lens that does not supported ): very weird because i had the camera 2 hours before it breaks on, and there it worked all fine.. i didnt drop the camera, or it didnt get wet or something. I clean it, camera on and off, new batteries. I tried everything i can /: I was so sad xD Very strange but i knew i had support o: Got my money back, so i will buy a new one and hope, it didnt happen to me again xD *fingers cross*

    In an attempt to avoid breakage, I avoid buying lenses with motors.

    • @dasaen
      @dasaen Před 17 dny +1

      Same, I am constantly scanning ebay for old optics. Only have one main lens with motors and then all manual. Can take when out in the rain, open them, clean them 😂 I kind of hate even that the newer lenses don’t manual focus mechanically, just in case the motor breaks you can still use them.
