My Bird Photography Lens Broke during a Trip
My dear Canon RF 100-500mm which is the lens I use 99% of the time for my wildlife photography randomly decided to abandon me after less than 2 years use while I was on a wildlife photography trip on one of places I love the most, Helgoland.
Join me on this small vlog while I test if the lens has been fixed and I share what I have been up to during the past few month of absence from CZcams. Trips, studies, birds, teaching and a bit more :)

Why are there so few Women in Wildlife Photography?
zhlédnutí 1,6KPřed 4 měsíci
Wildlife photography is still largely men-nominated (and the disparity is even greater when looking at the professional level). But do people realise this? And which are the reasons why there are less women wildlife photographers? Are the challenges specific to genders (not only women, but also men and non-binary) people face while doing wildlife photography? To answer these questions I conduct...

Join me in this new adventure, where I bring my very first bird and wildlife photography set-up (a Canon 1300D and a Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5,6 IS STM lens) for a session in the park and I compare the results with photos taken with my current professional gear (Canon R5 and Canon RF 100-500mm lens). I feel there's way too much emphasis put on gear...

Editing a Bird photo: Easy step-by-step Tutorial

This is an example of a very natural editing style for bird photography, which doesn't aim to alter the scene but only to enhance its aspect as it was originally. These are the steps I follow for the post-processing of most of my wildlife photos, although the "intensity" will be different depending on the starting point. This was a pretty good photo to start with, so it didn't require much work...

      My Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 USM L (non-IS) broke in half after about 30 years of service (a screw failed). It was a bother, but it spurred me to move over to Nikon (at the time for the D500 and 500 PF). But I mean, that lens had been producing amazing images since 1988 so good going on it to make it to 2018. These days I have multiple lenses with a bit of overlap and multiple bodies. And while not tested in anger, my insurance will provide loaner lenses and bodies if something does fail.

      Canon EF70-200 f2.8 L (non IS) - dropped it and now the AF is intermittent. I dropped my 50mm f1.4 a few days after getting it (used lens) and AF stopped completely. I haven't bothered to fix either as it's not worth it financially (and the 70-200 doesn't have spares anyway). I also dropped my 20-35mm f2.8 L (also out of spare parts availability) and the button for AF/M came off. AF still works without issue, it's just a p.i.t.a to change between AF and M as you need a fine tool to move the wire part.

      Hi Chiara! I'm from Brazil and the 100-500mm lens is my dream. I'm planning to buy it, but I'm very worried that similar problems might happen to me. My father has a broken EF 24-105mm lens, and I discovered that zoom lenses can have issues caused by the flat cable when you frequently zoom in and out. It's the movement of this cable that causes the problem. I realized that if I buy the 100-500mm, I might face this issue someday too. The 24-105mm still works with a fixed aperture (F4), but if you let the camera decide, you get an error. I hope to get my 100-500mm very soon and that problems like this don't happen too quickly.

    • @davepastern
      @davepastern Před dnem

      @@arthurgarciatuk I presume your rather had a mark 1 24-105 (EF)? If so, the problem was a badly designed lens with the aperture ribbon cable being constantly pinched. The mark 1 units had a very high failure rate (it wasn't if, but when). The mark 2 improved and fixed it mostly, but it wasn't perfect and the issue still persists, just to a much lower percentage. AFAIK, the RF version of this lens no longer has the problem (i.e. totally solved). Any lens can fail. Even expensive Ones.

    Being out in the field and people questioning me is a bother, I found it helps a lot to wear a name tag. I suggest putting on a name tag with your business logo on it and a photo of yourself whether you are a man or woman. It makes you look more official and reduces the chances of people bothering you. I think it makes people see you more like a journalist with a press pass.

    Hi Chiara, I am very disappointed by the R5 results. All your shots with R5 are not sharp and look flat. I have the same camera R5 + RF 100-500mm and my pictures are so sharp that I have to reduce sharpness when editing. I suspect that the picture style used and your setup can be greatly improved. If I take an 80D and compare it to the R5, results would be huge. What is your shooting mode, picture style used, the AF Case used, the white balance used, Clarity = ?, lens correction profile used. If you send me your settings I can help you to obtain better results, if you want. Have a good day!

    • @chiaratalia_wild
      @chiaratalia_wild Před 2 měsíci

      Hey Steve, I really appreciate your comment. I can ensure you the photos were all sharp and there are no technical issues with my set up.Perhaps worth it to keep in mind in a CZcams video, photos get inevitably compressed so the quality always appear lower versus looking at the photo itself - especially because here it was a screen recording of a presentation. The photos look flat because the it was a dull and grey day - as I also explain in the video the environmental conditions greatly impact a photo result. I did on these photos very minimal editing (as I also mentioned) because that wasn't the main point of the video - of course spending more time photos would have been better with both setups :) In addition, the picture style used doesn't affect the image as these were RAW files anyway.

    • @steveparent8788
      @steveparent8788 Před 2 měsíci

      @@chiaratalia_wild Hi Chiara, when we convert an image it takes all modifications made to the image from the RAW images. If we configure the camera with the best available parameters very minimum corrections would be have to be done before conversion. Did you preset us the RAW images or JPG images ?

    • @chiaratalia_wild
      @chiaratalia_wild Před 2 měsíci

      @@steveparent8788 Hello Steve, as just mentioned, I shoot in RAW and then I take care of the editing myself using a software. So the photos you see here were all shot in RAW, then really minimally edited (just the basic adjustments) and saved as JPEGs. I normally do more editing - but in this case it wasn't the main goal of the video. I understand shooting in JPEG is a huge time-saver, but personally I like to be in total control of the processing of the file. This is especially for wildlife photography in which often photos are taken in sub-optimal lighting conditions (at least for me as I do lots of sunrise/sunset/low light work). For as much as the parameters are set, I would have to throw away a large part of out-of-camera JPEGs, that on the other hand I can "save" if I have the RAW files. But if shooting in JPEG trusting your camera processing works for you, that's brilliant of course!
