I would buy only for children at Christmas, I do this not only to save money but also to stop unceasary waste created at that time of year. X
And also only for close family - you could have a secret Santa for the adults if you all get together over Christmas where you only buy for one person up to an agreed value - if you set a decent amount e.g £20 that could still be really nice. I ask my mum and dad to buy me presents I can use - last Christmas my Dad got me a voucher for £50 for Sainsbury’s and I had cash off my mum and my stepdad - it was so nice (and novel) not to worry about the January food shop, for once!
@Victoria18 we have done secret santa in the past and it works well. Great idea for food shopping!
We stopped buying presents for adults for Christmas and birthdays when everyone started having their own families, it just got too much.
For all the nieces and nephews we stop buying presents at 18 for Christmas and 21 for birthdays. The only people I buy gifts for now are my children and grandchildren.
You could do an ornament or something everyone agrees with for the adults (Picture frame, chocolate, candle, socks etc.). Everyone buys one and wraps it and when you get together everyone puts them into a pile and then each picks one that was wrapped by someone else No name tags needed. Set a low cost limit.
Your strength is inspiring. Please dont feel guilty about spending a little on yourself. Im so glad to hear that things are starting to look up 🙂
Only buy new school uniform if they need it in Sept. I used to wait and get new school shoes in the sale and never got new lunchbox and pencil case - they seemed happy with “saving the planet” rather than keep buying new unnecessarily.
Nice to see that you have some money to put into your sinking funds. ❤ Take care and I look forward to your next video.
Thank you ❤️
Glad you are feeling better in yourself you sound like you are coping with things now 😉👍
I have a sinking fund for my grandchildren’s school shoes. A practical way I can help out and relieves the pressure on their cash strapped parents. Mary
That’s such a lovely thought ☺️
You are a good and practical woman!
Love these videos ❤ thank you for doing them and being realistic for most of us who have £100 or under to stuff. Keep going ❤❤
❤️
Our local library is fab in the summer for kids, they do a national summer reading challenge for children with free stickers games and prizes as you read books, some of my happiest summer holiday memories are in libraries as I’m such a book geek 🤓. You’re doing so well Nicola 💪 x
Every little helps and it is amazing how sinking funds can build up. Hopefully your car not and service won’t eat up all your money allowing you to carry some over. Glad things are starting to move in a positive direction for you. Onwards and upwards😀👍
When our kids were small we bought a block of ice cream & packet of wafers & made ice cream sliders when we were on days out. At that time us was ££ cheaper than ice cream vans.
I used to buy a block of ice cream and make ice cream sandwiches by cutting the block into the thickness I wanted and then using a round cookie cutter for the ice cream and putting them between two oatmeal cookies. We could also buy the rectangle chocolate sandwich cookie in the bulk section. I would wrap the ice cream treats in wax paper and keep in the freezer.
you are coming back strong and inspiring. onwards and upwards. xx
At what age does one talk to children about lack of money? I sure knew we didn’t have lots of money by the time I was 9 . I went to a new school and said I didn’t want ice cream for dessert because I thought it cost extra!
This year is just flying by. So glad things are improving for you.🤗💐💐
Isn’t it just!? And thank you ☺️
So happy that things are just a bit better! You deserve the best. ❤
Thank you ❤️
This is a random one but on the pen marks on clothes spray liberally the mark with cheap hair spray. Then dab and wash as normal. Not sure how it will work on already washed clothes. But in future it works a treat (got sharpie off my sofa was so good)!
My kids are young teens now and for Christmas we dont spend much at all. I make it about the meaning of Christmas. They spend a lot of time playing their violins at quite a few church services ( they are gifted musically). When they were small the excitement was dressing them as angels, the drummer boy, shepherds, Mary. My daughter was even baby Jesus ( channelling Frank Spencer and baby Jessica).
We spend the week prior to Christmas playing Christmas carols at nursing homes including Christmas day.
And I take the kids to local charity shops with money to buy all the family presents in recent years. That's fun, they love it.
We do get the kids a couple of nice big presents but dont do the food thing. We keep that simple and basic. And we do a Yankee Christmas with my brother sister and dad..$20. That is heaps of fun. My kids love it.
Jeez this year is going like the clappers - I started my current job just before Christmas, and it really doesn't feel like I've been there nearly 6 months. So happy that you have something to put into your sinking funds, but please don't feel guilty for spending some money on yourself. Everyone needs a little pick-me-up now and again and if you're able to use it for something that makes you feel good (like having your hair or your nails done) then why not?
I might save to get my hair done at some point - my last hair cut was October 🙈
My sinking funds are going slowly but paid off my consumer debt this month. Now on to saving for a debt free holiday. I won’t have any holiday time by the time I go in February 2024 so I have to save $1,000 for the days I’ll be missing work. My side job is slow right now so it might take me longer than I’d hoped
Good luck with that aim ☺️
Make a treasure hunt page..items to find on walks etc
Hide jigsaw pieces in sandwich bags around house or garden. Kids lovw hunting for them to build the picture
Could you & kids camp out in garden or at grandparents? Literally holiday at home.
Thanks
Hi, I hope you’re ok. Realised I hadn’t seen any of your videos for a while and just wanted to check in on you. x
I cant find the vid now but emily norris did a realon getting a thermus putting ice lollys in and ice cubes and taking tgat to the park ect!?! Worth a try
Hello Nicola hope all is well with you and your sons. Best wishes.
Hi. For school uniform I keep a eye on Facebook marketplace as sometimes people sell or give jumpers with school badges away free. Everything else we get from asda unbranded to save money.
Nicola, have you sorted out doing your prescription by prepaid certificate yet. Will save you money each month especially if you get more than one thing each month x
school lost and found usually has loads of clothes in it
Buying a cool box and a box of ice creams may be a cheaper way for you to have picnics.
Would they stay frozen, do you think?
@@NicolaatTheFrugalCottage yes I bought a cool box and ice packs last year if you dont keep opening the lid it stays frozen for 8+ hours. Just pop the ice packs in th4 freezer 24 hours before you need them.
You can also add a bottle of frozen water to help things stay cool.
@@NicolaatTheFrugalCottage yes just add enough freezer packs or frozen bottles of water. I used to do this when picking up from school on Fridays when other children went to the ice cream van.
Can you split the cost of Christmas and birthdays with their father?
He also buys presents for them from him.
List*
You must pas some of his lost onto others. Grandparents and his father. I made the mistake for years of eying to buy my wine everything and I ended up worse off for it.
Hey Nicola, where do you do your food shopping?
Mainly Asda, sometimes sainsburys. Why?
It may be worth checking out some of the budget ranges in Sainsbury’s (surprisingly cost effective) and also using Lidl or Aldi as well as B&M and Home Bargains as Asda doesn’t seem to be very cheap anymore
Contact the school pta and see uf they are running a secind hand uniform sale. Also end of year is when schools try and get rid if the heap of lost property. No name jumpers are fair game!
Nicola what is your secert saving up money notes.
No secret really, just filling my budget planner in every day and watching the pennies.
@@NicolaatTheFrugalCottage thank you bought my self small brown envelopes writen on each envelope £20 £10 £5 put £5 away in a box
Hairspray gets pen out!
Oh does it? I might try that!
So does hand sanitizer.
Teach them to make ice cream
I'm sure your granddad wouldnt want that money just stuck in an envelope, you could go and get your nails done or something
Thanks
