Audio File Recovery - Showing Zero bytes on SD Card

  • I was using the Zoom H4n at an event to record audio. It was on top the Dj's speaker and it rattled off and the impact of the zoom h4n hitting the ground caused it to power off rendering a 0 bytes file. This may also work if you were to pull an sd card out while still recording.
    Programs you need:
    Data Rescue- www.prosofteng.com/windows-da...
    Audacity - www.audacityteam.org/download/
VLC (to see import setting) - www.videolan.org/vlc/
    1. Use Data rescue to make a "clone" of the card with the audio file on it.
    2. Create a disk image of the clone using Disk Utility.
    3. Import the .dmg file you created into Audacity as a raw file
    4. export recovered file

This is getting me close but different parts of the audio (on different attempts) are blown out when they pop up in Audacity - even sections that I have clean.

Hi there... for some reason, the Clone process makes the new USB card unreadable, on my mac, even if I tried at the second attempt to format the card before processing.
Do you think I can try to recover the 0 bytes data directly from my original H4N SD card? Thank you.

Hi! Thank you so much for this. Good news is that I could recover the 0 byte files.
But I recorded a DJ set in 4CH Mode and now the crowd sounds and the system sound have morphed into one, so every 2,887 seconds it switches and to split them takes 20 mins each 15 seconds :(
Do you have any tips how I could export both files separately?

Ahh man… that sucks… I really don’t know how you would do that… ahhhhh. At least it’s there but I feel for the time it may cost ya.

Hi @venussnippel ... please what were your Import Raw settings in Audacity? I also recorded in 4CH Mode with a microphone connected in the first XLR input of my H4N, but all i get in Audacity is an intense white noise result.

Ewwwwe…. I’m not sure… have your recorded anything on it since? There is a way to recover if you haven’t yet… I think it might, not 100% sure..

@@JRESHOW No. I haven’t. As soon as I format ed the card I ejected it. It was by mistake and I deleted 1:15 min of audio from my Zoom H5 recorder. I tried Disk Drill and at least other 5 software and nothing

same thing happened to me with the same recorder and i just keep getting weird feedback noise with some instances of bits of the audio playing (but VERY distorted / unusable) - i tried using 45 as the setting and it kind of worked for the files that still work, but for the zero byte files they're still unusable. i have no idea what to do either
