I can't wait to see the rest of the reaction. This is one of the best movies ever made. It won five academy awards and Russell Crowe took home the gold that year as best Actor and it won awards for best sound, costumes, visual effects and Best Picture. But, even then everyone in the movie just gives 110% in their performances. It was a classic even in its day and was one of the first times in a theater I teared up ever as a 13 year old kid. I'm glad you guys reacted to it.

Richard Harris was famous in 1970ish for the movie, “A Man Called Horse.” It was on tv a lot.
And Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter movies and Caesar in the Gladiator. I’m sure he acted in many more films.

The only thing i didn't quite get it, is how did the praetorians manage to undisturbed get Maximus out of the camp, from the middle of his legions, at least 10 thousand veteran legionnaires right there (the northem army was one of the best if not the best army the empire had). One call from Cicero or any santinel and the whole praetorian guard present in that camp would have been eaten alive, it would have been a quick work. Historically speaking, at that time, the legions under a general's command were loyal to that general first, and then to the emperor. Fact confirmed in the second interaction (in Rome) between Maximus and Cicero. Some emperors were generals prior and took the throne having their army behind. But ok, that was the script, otherwise it wouldn't have been that much of a movie. Otherwise, great piece of art, one of my favourite.

I was watching this again recently while smoking and the thing that hit different was that first scene where the Romans fought the Germanic Barbarians. That one line never leaves me where that general looks to Maximus and says, "A people should know when they're conquered." And immediately after you see how effective (I won't say the romans easily won) the Romans are back then. Like, they're organized like a modern football team. They got different players doing different things. Seems super basic but this is 2000 years ago, and any level of organization is like a weapon. The romans were pretty freaking organized considering how long ago it was.
-Also, Maximus is from modern day Spain, which back then would have been part of the empire, but the ethnic distinction is still recognized. Early in the USA, state affiliation was more firmly felt than national affiliation, and in Rome it was similar where these regions were all still Roman, but the land was Spain and the people still felt different than french folks in Rome (That tiger gladiator? The Tigris of Gaul? Gaul is where France is now) or people from northern africa. Think of the USA but with super radical states where they all had different languages and cultures but just loosely strung together by big poppa Rome's government..

Oliver Reed, who played Proximo, died from a heart attack during a break from filming Gladiator in Valletta, Malta, on the afternoon of 2 May 1999. According to Gladiator screenwriter David Franzoni, Reed had encountered a group of sailors on shore leave from British frigate HMS Cumberland in a bar, and challenged them to a drinking match. Reed fell ill during the drinking and collapsed;despite efforts at resuscitation by his friends, Reed died in an ambulance while en route to hospital. He was 61 years old.
The actor Omid Djalili, who was also in Malta at the time of Reed's death filming Gladiator, said during an interview in 2016: "He hadn't had a drink for months before filming started.... Everyone said he went the way he wanted, but that's not true. It was very tragic. He was in an Irish bar and was pressured into a drinking competition. He should have just left, but he didn't.Having made a number of promises to Ridley Scott prior to filming, including that he would not drink during production, Reed worked around this by only drinking on weekends. Co-star David Hemmings was a longtime friend of Reed's (they appeared together in the 1964 film The System), and in 2020 Scott stated, "David Hemmings (Cassius) promised to look after him and said to me [upon his death], I'm really sorry, old boy".
A funeral for Reed was held in Ireland in Churchtown, where he had resided during the last years of his life. His body was interred in the Bruhenny Graveyard there. The epitaph on his gravestone reads, "He made the air move."

There's an interesting dynamic between Maximus and the big guy that trains the gladiators. The big guy is German like the barbarians that Maximus was fighting in the north.

You referred to Maximus as "king" at the beginning, I think you know you got that wrong, in a technical sense, but as I understand it; a roman legion had a relationship with their generals, closer to that of a medieval king, than they did with the emperor.

Caught your guys Saving Private Ryan reaction 1 and 2. And I enjoyed it thoroughly. And that's why I subscribed. This is just a suggestion and take it for what it's worth. Would love to see more reactors like yourselves. Do a lot more of the movies. What we call the classic golden age of Hollywood movies in part. Which I think actually started in the 1930s. But do some movie reactions for movies from the 50s to the early 80s. There are some great Hollywood films from the 60s and 70s in there. Take care and be well always !

@@Dai.Natreacts VERY KIND OF YOU TO SAY SO. I'M ON AN ULTRA SMALL SECOND DEVICE. THAT'S WHY I'M TYPING IN CAPS I AM NOT SCREAMING. I HATE WHEN PEOPLE INSINUATE THAT. WELL I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU HAVEN'T DONE BUT MAYBE I'LL GIVE YOU A LIST OF FIVE OR MORE OR SOMETHING. ONES THAT WERE MY FAVORITES ANYWAY. MAYBE I'LL STAY WITH THE MOVIES OF THE LATE SIXTIES OR EARLY SEVENTIES FIRST. I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'VE DONE THE MOVIE JAWS YET. BUT THE THIRD STAR OF THAT MOVIE ROBERT SHAW. WAS IN A COUPLE OF GREAT FILMS ABOUT 2 YEARS BEFORE THAT. ONE WAS CALLED THE STING STARRING ROBERT REDFORD AND PAUL NEWMAN. HE WAS THE THIRD STAR IN THAT MOVIE BASICALLY AS WELL. AND I THINK HE STOLE IT. IT'S A MOVIE ABOUT AN ELABORATE CON A CHICAGO MOBSTER (PLAYED BY ROBERT SHAW).IN THE EARLY 1930S OR LATE 1920S. THE POKER GAME ON THE TRAIN WHICH WAS THE SETUP FOR THE CON BETWEEN NEWMAN AND SHAW IS PRICELESS. ANOTHER MOVIE THAT HE WAS IN AROUND THE SAME YEAR WAS TAKING OF THE PELHAM 123. THAT WOULD BE THE ORIGINAL NOT THE REMAKE FROM I DON'T KNOW THE 2000 WITH DENZEL WASHINGTON. THIS MOVIE STARS WALTER MATTHAU JERRY STILLER FROM SEINFELD FAME AND ROBERT SHAW. A NEW YORK CITY SUBWAY IS HIJACKED AND RANSOM IS DEMANDED. ALSO IN THE SAME YEAR IS A MOVIE CALLED THE EXORCIST. ONE OF THE ALL-TIME HORROR GREATS AND ONE OF THE FIRST OF ITS KIND. ALSO THE ORIGINAL MOVIE CALLED DEATH WISH STARRING CHARLES BRONSON WHICH CAME OUT AROUND 1974. AND YOU HAVE THE ORIGINAL POSEIDON WHICH CAME OUT AROUND 73-74. WITH AN ALL-STAR CAST OF THE DAY. TOWERING INFERNO WHICH CAME OUT AROUND 1975. WHICH IS ALSO PART OF THE GENRE LIKE THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE CALLED DISASTER FILMS. THE ORIGINAL PLANET OF THE APES MOVIES STARTING IN 1968 STARRING CHARLTON HESTON AND RODDY MCDOWALL.. AND A CLASSIC SUSPENSE THRILLER WHODUNNIT. BASED ON A WOMAN BRITISH CRIME NOVELIST CALLED AGATHA CHRISTIE. MOVIE IS A REMAKE FROM A 1948 BRITISH MOVIE CALLED AND THEN THERE WERE NONE. MOVIE IS CALLED TEN LITTLE INDIANS. A SEMI ALL-STAR CAST OF THE DAY. STARRING BRITISH ACTOR RICHARD ATTENBOROUGH GERMAN ACTRESS ELKE SOMMER AND BELIEVE IT OR NOT A VERY YOUNG AND HANDSOME OLIVER REED. WHO WE JUST WATCHED IN GLADIATOR. START WITH THOSE AND I GUARANTEE YOU YOU LOVE 80 TO 90% OF THESE FILMS. THESE FILMS AND MOVIES BACK IN THE DAY. WERE BASED ON GREAT STORIES SCRIPT DIALOGUE CHEMISTRY BETWEEN THE ACTORS AND OCCASIONAL MAKEUP AND SEMI SPECIAL EFFECTS. THAT WOULD DONE REAL TIME ON FILM. NOT ADDED LATER WITH THE OVERUSED CGI OF THE DAY. THANK YOU TAKE CARE AND BE WELL !
